16 yrs old, was under age, at Selina's Coogee Bay Hotel, slightly drunk, fingering two woman who is just met against the railing looking down at the stage, danced and sweated... 1986 what a night
How the fuck did I miss this band for so long? They are phenomenal. The musicianship, the songs, the energy, tight as fuck. I'm converted and they just cost me nigh on £300, because I bought those two expensive tins from Amazon. But worth EVERY single penny.
I first saw Oils at the age of 17 or 18 at Penrith. Converted straight away and went to many many concerts. Bought all their albums in the 80's. Saw their last gig at Hordern Pavilion last night. Good times.
I keep coming back for a go at this video every few months... unreal. That's one of the best solos ever there... makes my hairs on my neck stand on end.
At their best in front of and with us their home (sydney) audience. They were unmatched. They got slicker but with Giffo in this period their power was unmatched. Best live band ever. Saw them hundreds of times and they never disappointed. They still don’t but this period are the best memories ever.
Did anybody ever interact with an audience better than Garrett? And can you imagine the current crop of pop stars (or just about any other performer, from any era you care to name) trying to keep it together at such a killer pace, even when they've snagged their mic lead on a monitor? Midnight Oil were, in their heyday, a juggernaut that couldn't be stopped.
Great memories. They were am mighty live band. The sound was so intense it hit you in the chest and was like being whacked. The sound carried outside was like the deck of an aircraft carrier in combat.
One of the greatest two guitar assaults in rock. Watching both Jim and Martin was always a marvel as they bounced off each other as no other band. Malcolm and Angus Young were out the front too.
Saw them the first time they played In Brisbane in 1980 and then last year on their final tour on the Sunshine Coast and obviously many times in between in the early years. They played at a Joint Effort at UQ November 1980 with a eclectic group of support acts. Here's the kicker, The Mentals were the main support act and they were better than the Oils on the night. That's saying a lot. Great night.
@kirktonstreet True story: Back in 2001 on the afternoon before seeing them play I watched this clip from 20,000 W RSL wishing they were going to play some really old stuff like it that night. They ended up playing this exact song (albeit a little slower). One of my best Oils memories!
