I'm so glad that these two LIKED the First Blair Witch Project. So many people piss on this movie, I was starting to believe I was the only person who liked and was genuinely scared by that film.
Yeah people are really rough on the movie now, I think because it is very nontraditional in that it shows and explains very little (which I actually think is the film's greatest strength.) I still remember seeing it for the first time and SHAKING because I was so scared.
There was evidence of space and time manipulation in the first film. The group follows a compass north and somehow wind up back at the same log they had already crossed. The Rustin Parr house was burnt to the ground after he was arrested but Heather and Mike found it at the end.
Yeah, Mike kicked the map out of frustration, he wouldn't have messed with the compass. He didn't think Heather's map was useful but he never showed any grievances with the compass so that wouldn't make sense for him to mess with that. Also, that still wouldn't account for how the Parr house was found intact.
According to Red Letter Media, the cast in the first one had almost no idea what was going on, and essentially the directors would do things like, shaking the tent in the night, making weird sounds, etc I actually consider the first one a good found footage movie. It actually looks like a found footage as opposed to say, "Paranormal Activity" or something like that. Wherein they have the main characters have jobs convenient to how quality the footage is "Oh I'm a web developer andn techie so..." Glad this sounds enjoyable, and that you and Brian had a good time.
That's what I hate, I think Doug can still be hilarious, but his co-stars just aren't. I skip every skit now, when I used to love them when it was just him.
Apparently, the budget was 5 million, according to wikipedia. Currently, it's being projected to reach 15-20 million on its opening weekend, so maybe we'll get that prequel/more sequels after all?
KandiStomper don't get me wrong, I love the guy but I was trying to make it through the whole video, listening while doing chores and shit and I just couldn't. Once you start hearing it, it's too late.
People are speculating that the light was a part of the witches time travel powers. That flash of light was sunlight, a whole day passing in almost an instant, creating the feeling that nighttime lasts longer. Which would explain why they were so shocked seeing it, a day literally passing in front of their eyes.
It's been two hours since I watched this movie. You don't know fear until you're constantly checking the back seat of your car and just waiting for some supernatural shit to suck your car into the sky and fucking fling it like a goddamn frisbee. I. Cannot. Fucking. Sleep. Also whaT THE FUCK GUYS. BRADFORD, YOU DIDN'T FUCKING WARN ME ENOUGH ABOUT THIS. GODDAMMIT, BRAD, THAT TWIG SCENE IS NOT JUST "AMAZING" I NEARLY THREW UP. FUCK.
If the Blair Witch really has the possibility to alter time and space, what would have been amazing is if the kids went back in time when Heather and Co. shot Blair Witch à la Back to the Future 2 where the first movie and the sequel coexist.
You guys should check out the Good Bad Flicks video about Blair Witch 2. He explains some things about the studio involvement and how they pretty much ruined an otherwise decent idea for the movie.
@ August West That's the premise of his show and why it's called Good BAD Flicks: He reviews movies that a lot of of people consider BAD but he likes and breaks them down to show us, the viewers, the good that he sees in them. It's not that he loves every movie he's ever seen. He likes all of the movies he reviews and those are the only kinds of movies he reviews. He realizes that there are more than enough people out there who already review terrible movies, as it is. I love his channels and his reviews. Even when I absolutely HATE some of the movies he reviews, mainly The Happening, I respect his views and he always makes a really good case for why he likes these "bad" movies in the first place.
I like Blair Witch 2. My biggest problem with it was that the characters came across as "characters", whereas the characters from the original movie came off a lot more realistic. And I did think the ending worked for the movie. Sorry you guys didn't like it. :( Glad to hear the new one's decent though!
The whole camera stunt is a neat modern reference to Greek mythology o.o She used a camera instead of a brass shield, and instead of Medusa, it was a witch
They can try making the Blair Witch games into spin-off movies or a tv series. Volume 1: Rustin Parr Volume 2: The Legend of Coffin Rock Volume 3: The Elly Kedward Tale But for being video games... they need a good writer and directer to translate them into a motion picture.
I love the original blair witch but i can see why people don´t like it. it´s because of the first 30 minutes where they´re just trecking in the woods. it helps to build a sense of false security but a lot of people get annoyed nothing´s happening. That´s why tension is hard to do right now a days because people have the attention span of a child on cocaine
Eh, I guess I can agree with that. Though to be fair, there are plenty of films with just as much buildup, but the buildup is far more interesting due to better characters, actors, and settings. Alien and Jaws come to mind.
You guys missed something when that chick with the leg falls from the tree, I was looking closely and for a split second a fucking hand grabs her arm and causes her to fall.
If you want a movie about a foot that gets really weird watch Bone Tomahawk. It's two hours of Patrick Wilson hobbling along as Kurt Russel, the old guy from Six Feet Under and the dude from Lost heckle this poor man who's leg is broken and can barely walk. Also it's an amazing horror movie plz watch
I think for this movie, the fact that its so similar to the first makes sense. It made it seem ritualistic with the rocks and stick figures and walking in circles leading to the climax in the house and the mirror paradox part when she runs into the attic really made my head spin.
I liked this one too. The only thing that would've made it (just a touch) better is if Heather Donahue actually had had a small cameo near/at the end. In all honesty, that's kinda what I thought (hoped) they were gonna do at first. That would've been really cool, I think. As it is though, I think this does make for a far superior sequel to "The Blair With Project". I don't even count the 2nd one, honestly.
I love this film...and I don't usually get claustrophobia-but damn, the end of the movie really did make me squirm. The original to me of course will always be the scariest of the genre, but this sequel was very satisfying. I've never seen "Book Of Shadows", so for me...this WAS the sequel and I'm going to ignore the 'other' sequel for sure.
Casual sadism towards little brats plus idiocy? Maybe they had bets running too. Who knows? Mysteries of the universe. As a mum myself these guys would end up praying for the Blair Witch to kill their sorry asses after I'd be done with them though LOL.
I felt like the first 2 acts of this movie had some ok scenes, but I felt like it escalated way too quickly. Like in one day, all of this stuff happens that took like over 3 days to happen in the first movie. And Right after they break that one stick figure, it goes from 0-100 and with the buildup that they had, it just didn't work for me. There wasn't enough tension built, so by time shit got crazy, I just wasn't into it. But Once they enter the house though, that's when I started to really enjoy the film. The last act was the only redeeming thing in this film for me. Just my opinion though and great video guys! Really enjoyed your comments about the film
I remember seeing Book of Shadows on an autumn afternoon with practically NOBODY in the theatre. I think the only reason I had any attraction to Blair Witch 2 beyond that day is because it's a fairly gorgeous movie with its cinematography, but fuck me if it makes any damn sense at all. I've watched it a fair amount of times, and it just doesn't sort itself out. Far too objective of a storytelling viewpoint that leaves you dangling out on a limb when the end credits roll.
Spoiler alert ahead for if anyone hasn't seen it yet..... So, the way I understood it. the witch was able to twist time for different people. So when James went into the house and Lisa was outside, while everything was happening with James, everything was happening with Lisa. I didn't quite pay that close attention to the difference in their scenes time wise, but I figured time moved slower for one while the other it moved faster. I don't know, it made more sense in my head. heh
Am I crazy or was the witch only visible for like less than a second? I really only got the vaguest sense of her shape, did I miss a good look at her? Also, why was she not visible in the camera at the end when it was pointed backwards, or was she and I just didn't see?
I'm guessing you guys might have missed it, but when the black girl, her name was Ashley btw, was climbing the tree for the drone, while she's reaching out for it something seems to shoot down from above (possibly a hand) and grab her arm for a second. That causes her to startle, lose her grip, and down she goes. I will agree the whole twigs and stuff in her leg was stupid because it literally went knowhere.
While I didn't find the original Blair Witch to be even remotely frightening, I did like it and appreciate it as a film and an avant-garde development in the history of cinematography. Although the story was at times lacking for me, the Blair Witch Project excelled in understanding the characters and developing them throughout the film, particularly with the advancing hysteria and mental breakdowns as the characters became more lost and ensnared in the myths of the Blair Witch, which was something else I found compelling. The background and mythology of the Blair Witch was well-designed in the way it is revealed by the locals and connected individuals, set-up as the basis for the characters' film-project, and referenced throughout the film as the characters come across more of the infamous locations within the myths and encounter disturbing occurrences during their project. I do not find the film to be perfect or even scary, but I did find it to be compelling and at times suspenseful, and I am glad that I watched it. To me, the Blair Witch Project is more-or-less a very fascinating art film.
Watching the first five minutes and hearing how you like the original Blair Witch Project... Man, I expected to see you rage on stuff like this, but maybe it's because I see you and Brian tackle so many shitty horror found footage films over the years that I've gotten used to it.
You guys missed a detail with the jump scare where Lisa is staring at her tablet. Her friend didn't come from the side at her. She actually came from behind her, but she wasn't visible in the camera footage for reasons that are clear later in the movie.
Because the time shifting was effecting the cameras. She stared dead the camera recording behind her and also the tent and then her friend appears right behind her, and the camera wasn't catching that. Even if she did appear right beside her, the camera footage would have picked it up as well, but it didn't. I thought it was weird and might have been an editing thing until the next scene plays out with the two townies talking about being lost for five days.
I remember watching the first Blair Witch Project when I was 10 years old on late night TV. It has always been one of my favorite movies of all time. When I saw the trailer for this new movie I instantly cringed and automatically assumed it would be terrible. But after watching this review I'm actually excited to give it a chane.
I think if BWP2 Book of Shadows was a movie on its own, it would have been okay/decent. The fact that it followed the original BWP is the real shame of it because of the iconic lasting mythology of that original. Your anger at BWP2 though is just too hilarious and very understandable! heheheh At least we have Jeffrey Donovan and Burn Notice from it. He rocks. I love your dig at ATM also (that movie made me soooooooooo angry!!!!!!).
At the 3:55 mark, when a train horn in the background, I just noticed the two beams of light between Brad and Brian, so I was like, "OH SHIT! Is this a snuff film?"
The solid theory of Josh and Mike going crazy and killing Heather is basically thrown away in this, even though it makes the most sense. Also this one doesn't have the raw authenticity to it that the first one had. It's just soft reboot qualities and aspects that we've already seen before.
Yeah that's good. Keep interrupting Brad to say, "like like like like like like like like" or to just pause for a period yourself, guy on the left. Interrupt somebody to not know what you're gonna say yourself. That's good.
Word Unheard Ach! Locking the door takes out some of the fun. We don't all know or look like each other you know. That's a bit racist. Well...... perhaps from behind Still, a little racist. Heh heh!
...really? Hrm. Maybe I should give it a chance. I honestly balked at the previews which made it look like a situation similar to the 2011 version of The Thing where they just do a lame, soulless remake but claim it is either a prequel or a sequel by adding flimsy connections and "new" characters that are really just stripped down, renamed and possibly gender changed versions of the old characters.. But I tend to line up pretty well with you guys and while I may not be in a rush to see it in the theaters, I might give it a look when its on video.
paranormal activity at the ending of the movie waited like 10 minutes before running there credits after a blank black screen. Blair witch ran the normal credits immediately lol referring to 20.44 min
I watched this review and now I've seen the movie. You guys have a lot of really good points, I actually bought a BWP/BWP2 combo back with the PC games and I also got the BWP2 van diecast. I watched all 3 movies on tv or dvd and i really like the 1st and 3rd.....the 2nd one was ok. I was actually really confused and not scared during the 2nd one.
The scene where the girl was pulling something out of her leg: It was hair, like the hair that was entangled in the Blair Witch twig symbol that the other girl picked up. The one that snapped in half. I didn't realize why she snapped in half, until I read that leg trauma girl broke the twig symbol and it acted as a voodoo doll to the girl whose hair was in it.
I think some points about this movie that make it even more interesting is that when asked about why they showed the witch in this movie the director said they didn't which leaves even more interesting questions like what were the monsters we saw could they have been past victims after all one thing about this movie that the creators said we would see was what happened to heather...so I'm guessing she was the monster shown in this movie.
I was only 10 when the first one came out so I saw it a little later lol but having older family members I so remember the hype hahaha so many debates on if it was real or not!! Might give this one a shot!!
Did you knoe that in the original Blair witch, the director didn't tell the actors what would happen at night? Their reactions are 100% real during most of the scares.
Hey Brad have you seen Ghostwatch? It's a BBC program that aired in 1992 but was presented as a live special and actually caused a panic in the UK. It's also what inspired the creators of The Blair Witch Project.
Where is Brian? Is he still doing these things or did he move away or something? He's one of my favorite stoned gremlin people and I haven't seen him for a while.
As to what the guy saw out the window: I think it was themselves. The footage when she's running up the stairs is almost exactly like the footage at the beginning of the film. With the time distortion bullshit you also see the local dude go from super bearded to facial scruff. So I don't see why that flash light couldn't have been his when he looked out the window.
13:06 Hey! I love Hypercube! It's a horror/sci-fi movie using quantum mechanics to kill people. Just because the ending makes no sense doesn't ruin the trip. And if you had enough time and enough drugs, Brad, I'd get super high and explain it to you.
I watched TBWP in an empty theater & had to walk home alone. Scared the shit outta me still does then "Book of Shadows" came out was excited but it was so freakin shitty. I still have to see this movie!!!!
