Sad how we all just threw these treasures away, history and all. If we keep doing this, then we will never see how we got by, had fun, worked or played, how we made romance and made families back in the bygone years. Erasing history is the perfect recipe to feeling fake and empty inside, so the next time you find something old, save it. Treasure it. Because these memories don’t last our entire lives, let alone forever
This song was disturbing to me as soon as I heard it. I remember feeling a strange connection when watching the movie and hearing it for the first time. I could never forget that melody as if I had lived in that era. And watching this video led me to a nostalgia that moved me. I'm Argentinean. Thank you
I used to go to a small museum in Stone Mountain GA and he had all kinds of these machines,, I'd stay all day because they're so fascinating,, especially playing ng this song,, ty for posting!❤️
I was probably 10 years old or so when I went there. I think it was literally on top of the mountain, and you had to take a cable car to get there. I don't think it's there anymore.
That museum was the Antique Car & Treasure Museum in Stone Mountain, run by the late Bobby & Tommy Protsman. They also had numerous art glass hanging lamps, petroliana, arcade games, CocaCola memorabilia, as well as cars and pianos and organs etc. neat place but I never got to visit before it closed and was auctioned off by I *think* Randy Inman Auctions of Iowa in a massive two or three day auction in 2009. You can still see the individual lots and remaining instruments that were there at the end in the archived version of this auction on LiveAuctioneers.
Wow! I've never seen this version of Midnight before! I'm trying to compile a list of all versions of Midnight, so I know what records to buy, since I really like the melody, and although this isn't a 78 I love this!
I'm almost done tuning and servicing my piano....things did not go as planned..... Once it's back and running, I'll re-record this for you with a fresh tune and with my tripod.
“You Interrupted me During my Speaking, If I wasn’t Interrupted I would have spoken the words I am not willing to Cause Damage or pain to your being, but instead to cause severe Head Trama. I am to attempt to Severely Bludgeon The Heck In wards.”
I had gotten sick ! Ah it's terrible ! But i hope i'll get healthy soon ! I had asked my dad if he could bring me my laptop so i could listen to this melody ! I truly love it !
Hey ! I'm after school now ! Finally I can listen to this song (oh and i took some pils yesterday and i feel kindaa better now but i needed to go to school because i had an special test today) . And the only thing that i can't understand now is...Why are people so cruel now ?
Geez....Yesterday was a day ! I didn't have time for myself because of school....I couldn't even listen to this song but i'm happy that today i can ! I love it...
Might need to be a custom one so they can get the roll but still leave the OPs legs free to pump the piano (that’s how you put in dynamics in a regular player piano; electrified players just bang out the tune flatly unless they’re original “expression pianos” or “reproducing pianos” which have systems to automatically add dynamics from coding in the margins of special rolls they play .
I can recommend a setup like I use for recording live broadcasts of my piano playing. I bought a heavy duty photography lighting stand with heavy duty friction lock adjustments from a local camera shop (I think Samy’s Camera). This stand has a long boom arm which extends out 4’ or so and can also be height adjusted fairly tall (like close to 7’ I think, which is more than needed for this purpose). The boom arm has another heavy duty friction rotation lock joint on it which can work as a counterweight. I have a special plastic smartphone holder which is designed to clamp onto a pipe, I think maybe a 1/2” or 3/8” pipe, and it clamps onto the free end of the boom arm. This is after I have the stand adjusted up high above my head. Thus the stand can hold my smartphone in place aimed down at the entire keyboard to watch my hands while I play which is good for live broadcasts and also tutorials. For here, the boom arm could be adjusted to hold the camera or phone in place between the person pedaling the piano and the roll, to get a good steady hands free view of it, plus allow their legs and hands to be free to “interpret” the roll and put in dynamics. Finally, a high quality microphone could be put on a short stand behind the piano soundboard (like a studio setup) and wired into a computer running good audio software (like Audacity to name one program), in order to capture the best piano sound including all dynamics 😃
this the first time i've actually seen a player piano working. the rolls look kind of like fragile paper, how does the mechanism actually work? i was at a rummage shop a while back and there were a bunch of the rolls. i have always liked old timey music ever since childhood. i've play the chords to this on guitar and sing to myself at home.
Hi. Thanks for checking out my video and commenting. The player mechanism works off of vacuum with a series of valves and leather pouches as well other various parts and pieces. You are correct about the paper being fragile. Many of the rolls you see posted are well over 100 years old. Thanks for watching.
In my "short" 10 years or so of roll collecting, this is the only copy I've ever seen. It was listed online for sale all by itself. They sent it to me in a plastic bag. When I opened up the package, the roll looked terrible. The box was completely destroyed, and the flanges were both just as bad. But the paper roll was perfect. I did what I could, and now you'd never know any of that happened. Thanks for watching and commenting!
This channel is an extremely underrated one! An instant favorite of mine and would be for any old 20th century music lovers. Do you have You Ought To See Sally On Sunday by any chance?
Thank you! I checked the spreadsheet of my rolls, and It doesn't come up. Unfortunately, I don't think I have it. But I thank you again for your kind words and watching my channel! Any other songs you'd like?
I have a ton of songs about the moon, but unfortunately, not that one. To be honest, I'd never heard it before. But I checked it out, and it's a great song! Thanks for asking and letting me know about it. I will keep an eye out for it in the future.
So are these rolls of music replays of actual performances? I mean they sound great either way but also - I know the answer is probably no - is there any way I could find sheet music of some of these songs?
It's quite amazing that pretty much nobody ever sang the verse included here, not even singers from the era AFAIK. Even more confusing to this is the fact that the notes played during the verse sound more like chords, instead of the melody? It's hard to discern. Would love to hear or even sing myself a full version of the song.
It was quite normal, during the dance band era, to miss out the verse. The music and the dancing were the thing. Commercial records often name the band, the dance step, and then say 'with vocal refrain'. The 'vocal refrain' could easily be Al Bowlly!
@@tooleyheadbang4239 I'm well aware of this, but it's still quite sweet nonetheless to have the full song. The original music sheet seems lost to time, as most music sheets available online of this song only include the chorus. So this video and another upload are pretty much the only instances where we can hear the verse in any form. Because even the faster versions of "Midnight", like the Roy Fox one, miss the verse in the instrumental, and the Fred Hartley one, which is fully instrumental, is instead a bit more improvisational.
It’s called a music roll. Although religious documents printed on a similar thing are correctly called “scroll”, these are correctly “rolls” for some reason. Even when the paper is in an endless loop, they are at least colloquially then called “endless rolls”(!!)
