@@fm_georgieclearly you have no idea what a good horror movie is. You just named two generic movies that are basically the exact same as every evil entity in a house movie. They rely on weak jump scares and the exact same storyline. Fall asleep during one which is likely to happen because they’re so boring and wake up to another and have no idea your watching something else. They rely on cheap cgi jump scares instead of a good storyline with psychological scares. The movies you like always relay also on some creepy kid who is usually extremely annoying. Really though anyone who sees the example of movies you think are good and compared to this aren’t going to value your opinion because you have the the view of a tween. Stick to your whitewashed, pop horror movies with cgi ghost children that were made for people like you who have no clue what a good movie is. Also have you not watched a horror movie from this decade? You probably think that paranormal activity was such an original premise? …the conjuring? Oh my christ you need to watch more horror movies if that’s your go to example.
I honestly think florence pugh deserved an oscar for her performance. This movie actually managed to disturb me and I'm not easily disturbed. Arguably the best psychological horror the 21st century
... Just... I don't know... This movie was really disturbing... It haunts you in a much different way then normal horrors... It stays with you longer... There was something different to it... Something much more evil...
Yes it was weird . Look at other movies from a24 studios they make some really good films. The florida project , the lighthouse, the witch are all fantastic but there is many more too. Better than this but like you said this movie sticks in your head it's well crafted but has no purpose. Its beautiful but bizarre. It's not frightening but its haunting. And it's not marmite because I neither loved it or hated it I would watch it again though.
@@strasserosborn07 I agree. I don’t even consider this movie a horror film. It’s more of a thriller. And the emotional journey is so immersive and effective. I cried multiple times. It is such a moving, beautiful, haunting, tragic film.
I think when people hear or see the word scary or horror they want jumpscares and all kinds of horror elements yet their missing the point that horror does not mean jumpscsres it means disturbing and psychological elements a d imagery. Remember horror is a wide field of a genre that is presented in all ways.
That's the American/Hollywood idea of horror, plenty of Asian horror use atmosphere and subtlety instead to scare you. Which is way better. Excessive gore and loud noises don't scare me. A creeping sense of dread over what might lurk in the dark is what scares me, a subtle feeling that you might not be entirely alone. So if you put the damn ghost front and center then it stops being scary after a few times.
I can't believe all the negative reviews here😱. This is one of my favorite horror movies EVER! I enjoyed every second of it. It's BEAUTIFULLY filmed (composition, colors, motifs), the music and the soundscape is superb, the atmosphere amazing. It's disturbing and very intense without it being too graphical or overtly violent (I mean... it's still a horror movie), it's much more a psychological horror and a drama that with a lot of symbolism then a gore movie. There are only a few graphic scenes in the whole movie. I absolutely love this movie.
Really??? Let me help you understand the vitriol. Horror genre limitations aside, the movie is a C- at best. It was over-acted, under-directed, poorly-scripted and annoyingly scored. The only saving grace was the cinematography (hence the C- instead of an F). More importantly, the story was just not believable from ANY aspect. Highly traumatized girl goes on a European vacation with her boyfriend who doesn’t seem to want her to go. Fully-grown grizzly inexplicably caught and caged by robe-wearing flower-power cultists. Elderly people willingly leaping to their deaths. Fellow travelers going missing without any real concern for their safety. Terror screams conveniently ignored. Pubic hair in food. Roofie drugs flatly refused then willingly ingested. Dance-a-thon to determine Queen - an OUTSIDER at that! Give me a freaking break. Look, if you liked the movie, then fine. I’m happy for you. But, don’t fool yourself into believing it’s one of the best because it really isn’t.
@@jjgalletta66 I noticed that this movie has heavily polarized both the viewers and the critics. I read reviews and articles tearing this movie apart, as well as praising it as an unique and masterly done artwork, with a lot of depth and attention to detail. As for the score being annoying - that's your evaluation of it, not a fact. Or rather - the soundscape creates a certain feeling of nervosity, I see it as its strong asset rather than its flaw. Some aspects that you mentioned have been focused on in reviews (with a similar view to yours) but the score is one factor that's usually mentioned as one of the film's strongest sides - but of course, we are all. entitles to out own opinions. As to credibility... I see this movie more as a bizzaire and dark, symbolic fairy tale.. The strength of the movie doesn't always come from how it would match against the real world's logic. Over acting - I simply don't agree. Possibly I perceive it as a part of the heavily stylized manner that this movie is made in. I don't see how this film is poorly directed. As for the script - as you're seeing it as a hard-to-believe story, I understand how the script would be to blame, narrative choices etc.
@@jjgalletta66 I don't think Jeff liked it!!! 🤔 . The cinematography was fantastic it wasn't overacted until the end. If you think this is a stinker you will absolutely love under the silver lake. Watch it and report back to me. That'll make you angry 😠.
Really phenomenal movie. Definitely a little weird digesting the artistic side of it but that's what powerful films do. When the shock wears off from the bold visuals the art is left to appreciate.
This is true cinema, it’s an exquisite and quite extraordinairy achievement in every way. Please don’t spoil it, watch it with an open mind. I have rewatched it and focused on everything I possibly could - it’s _sublime_
People were mentioning this movie under Red Velvet's MV Teaser (ppl saying it has the same vibes as this) and today is that MV's release. I finished watching this trailer while waiting because they're behind schedule:)
The story telling, the improvised gore all of it is absolutely incredible. Wasn't scared but it caught me off guard. It's definitely one of my favorite horrors! Can't believe I had no idea this existed. Can tell alot of effort went into this. This is going right next to the terrifier, Friday the 13th, Texas chainsaw massacre, Halloween, green inferno, Life, annihilation, slither, (edit) a Serbian film(I won't watch that one again though...) my top favorite horrors 👏 👏 👏
According to Red Velvet's ending part of Cosmic MV, the music video was inspired from this movie. I also did my research and it's all about something about a friendly vacation that leads to a place wherein there's this ritual conducted by pagan people and of course, unusual traits and killings.
It wasn't the horror that drew me in, I think I just appreciate the order of the community, I honestly would feel at home here, I must be extremely lonely lol.
@@Random-mj5np Emotionally I'm as a burn victim inside a bear suit. But I learn to mitigate the pain with soothing metaphors and simile. Thank you Sanri, we are both embers in the eternal ashes.
@@bluedot7817 rest assured my friend that most of us are burned from inside. But all we can do is find happiness in little things in our daily life coz one big happy or healing thing might not happen so it’s better to keep trying to smile and find happiness from small things
I did the opposite yesterday afternoon, Midsommar, into Hereditary. The scene with the boy smaching his head on the classroom table got me close my laptop and walk around my appartment for a couple minutes to cool the pressure down. Strong movies !
It's different from the horror that I have watched, it has a different cinematography, actually I can't explain how was the movie. But I have finished it and I can give a score of 8/10. It's rare and I was actually entertain in different way.
Finally watched it. Just finished, actually. And all I can say is… Wow, that is 2 and a half hours I’ll never get back. I just… I don’t even know how to respond. It… It wasn’t good, right? I mean, it couldn’t have been, right?? Disturbing and good production quality, I guess, but, no?? I mean, the acting was fine, but… too much Moaning… too much chanting… too much Florence Pugh hyperventilate every ten minutes. I mean, the writers had to be doing so many drugs to make this. There is no other possible explanation other than they were on the mushrooms. I mean, like the whole movie was so pointless?? It had no plot, no ending, nothing but mindless gore and insanity, and for a horror movie, that’s usually fine, but… I just have no idea what I was supposed to take away from that, other than to never visit rural Sweden in my lifetime.
@@mustafaalio6385 Amen, my friend. Sorry you went through it, too. Maybe it would be better if we did crystal meth and then rewatch it, again. Might make more sense
Had no idea how this film was going to turn out as it is full of suspense which was fine. Until half way through the movie. I wasted 2hrs watching this film. I wouldn't recommend this film to anyone not unless you in to watching gruesome stuff that would mess your mind up... Scary NO! Disgusting YES!
Sincerely, thanks for the heads up. I would have hated this film. I looked up the plot in Wikipedia after reading your comment and nope - it isn't for me! I'm glad some people like it, each to their own, but this is not my thing. Thanks for saving me from potentially weeks of feeling grossed out!
@@lizhiggins4805 a bit gory it's something you will remember, like a wedding for better and for worse. It's far from a gorefest but the gore it contains its pretty bad but its offset by the originality. Its clever different rather than horrifically different although if your a sensitive person you might disagree.
You really have to question the well-being of anyone who would conceive of, help create, take part in, or view such an assault on your better humanness...
I am currently clinically depressed, and for some reason decided to watch this movie. I’ve done some stupid things in the past, but watching this movie may be the dumbest one. I have wanted to throw up for the past 4 hours.
You know I have some mental health issues I can honestly say I. Agree... Maybe we could start a survivors group.. This movie absolutely disturbed the crap out of me still coming into my mind days later..
Why there isn't a Lovecraftian cosmic horror movie like this one where the main guys get invited to a big ceremony in a foreign country where people would sacrifice them to a cosmic being I would pay to watch that shit
Waited 3 hours for something to happen but only weirdness occurred throughout the movie. Its not marmite because I don't like marmite and its not marmite cos I didn't love it, and it makes about as much sense as what I have just said. Did I like it who knows? Was is different, yes. was it good different? It was different odd . As in bizarre odd? Nope just odd odd. Something made me watch 2h 50 mins perhaps I was brainwashed into the sect !!!! 👁
Agree! Did NOT like Hereditary! It’s making me wonder if this will be worth it. The trailer looks good. But if it’s anything like the other movie, it’ll be a waste of time.
I am seriously so confused at the good comments praising this movie, it was like..so dumb, pointless. I hate that I wasted my time watching this stupid thing
The most funked up film I've ever watched in my life time. I dont know if i liked it or not. Itd just beyond comprehension. I wish I'd not watched it. Not recommending to anyone at all. This is pure horror. P.S. just came here to watch it because of Florence Pugh. But it was something else. Great acting though!

Won't be watching this a second time. That Bear 🐻 f'ed me up at the end. I knew it was going to be good but I didn't expect it to be traumatizing. The Bear and the skinned straw people 😱. Flowers are now something to be feared. Definitely a masterpiece. I thought they would wheel the May Flower Queen 👑 down a hill on fire 🔥😆. Hunger games vibes.
Wow it’s freaked me out, reminds me of hostel intro ish style then it’s just like wow looks great there, then it got weird and the cliff thing. Going to have to watch Pipi long-stockings to calm myself down and think happy thoughts Won’t be visiting Sweden anytime soon sorry
