MIDST | Descent | Season 1 Episode 11 

I like to refer to this episode in my mind as 'the one where you feel 15 minutes of intense secondhand anxiety for Phineas, but there's a cool space backdrop'. (Or alternatively, 'the one where you spend the whole time trying unsuccessfully to get a read on Jonas Spahr, and only learn that he likes puns.')

Before this episode i thought the fold was a like Dunes storm. A planet wide fog moving across the planets service. The image of this vast black ocean with planets bobbing in and out was powerfully surprising. And on top of that Midst just floating in the Fold, spinning into its day night cycle, is immensely creative world building

Did not expect the deep existential dread this episode to come from a performance review.

I can't express how much I'm grateful that cr decided to showcase Midst on their channel. I'm not sure if I'd be aware of the show otherwise, and it would be such a shame, this is absolute top tier world building. I rarely get surprised nowadays, but I'm finding myself with my mouth wide open with every new episode, this one in particular. Great job Midst team.

I can imagine that someone read the fact that Saturn could float on water if there was an ocean big enough and said "A planet floating on a literal giant ocean would be sick"

A negative performance review immediately before a new assignment smacks of either a strong Dunning-Kruger effect or the Trust's alterior motives. If we shouldn't trust the Trust, I wonder what "unforced mistakes" the Trust hopes Phineas will make?

"Well. Gotta go kill fuze." Great way to end the episode 😂

This is probobly one of the most fascinating world building I have ever seen. I never imagined that the whole world is like this and I love it. Well done narrators.

The imagery is incredible. Describing (and even showing in illustration) the planet bobbing in the dark ocean like an apple in a barrel. It's just so good.

The worldbuilding made by the simple fact of Midst being a moon rotating out of an ocean of the Fold is downright masterful.

I am so addicted to this narration style. These 3 are so FREAKING awesome.

So Phineas has a crush on Sphar and thats why he is thinking this is fine, but this is very much Sphar throwing him under the bus. Sphar is washing his hands of all responsibility for Phineas' failings and setting him up for slaughter.

Boy Finn is going through it these last two episodes. What y’all gonna do to him next? Kill his dog? Make his wife leave him? 💀😂

Love a good empathic environment - the ship sinking with Phineas' emotions, the outlook growing ever more tenebrous until at least the inky-black Fold is revealed. Wonderful.

Not enough of a fix to satisfy my expectations. I need two episodes every week. 😊

I need to take a moment to appreciate the masterful storytelling this series just demonstrated. In this scene, there is no immediate threat to Phineas. However, to say the stakes are low could not be further from the truth. Let me lay it out for you: We know where Phineas will be doing when the moon falls. We know Phineas would never hurt a fly HOWEVER, we also know about Valour and Cainum and the importance of accumulating Valour to remain a free man Finally, we know Phineas has not broken even In summary: Phineas NEEDS this job Not wants it, NEEDS it And what does corporate ask of him: Never show weakness In one scene, all the established pieces fall into place to show the full picture of phineas' motivations, and - just like taking a picture - there will be deaths involved I, for one, can't wait to see how this un-folds (pun intended) and have complete faith our lovely narrators know EXACTLY what they are doing

I feel like Phineas is being set up to take the fall for something.

Realizing that the day/night cycles of Midst are just the turning of a planet half-submerged in a sea of night is... doing things to me. I'm going insane at the deftness of the worldbuilding

I know the background sound while Spahr and Phin are talking is supposed to be oars and wind but there's that sound of blood rushing in your ears, that time when you're so nervous that you hear your heart...the intensity rises and falls. I can feel Phineas' anxiety in it. Magnificent detail.

The writing in this series is just excellent. Even without watching the animation I can see everything in my mind. Such wonderful creativity. I cannot wait for the next episode.

The way Spahr casually threw out "we're going to Midst" gave me goosebumps. Such a casual phrase for what is essentially the religious army going to this wild West type world. Also, no, not Fuze!

I hate the Trust so much, even if they haven’t done anything truly despicable yet… but all of their focus on appearance and media and showing one’s “valor” blatantly… ugh, so many Capitol City from The Hunger Games vibes. Just to be clear, I also LOVE THIS, I’m so damn invested in Phineas’s story and these a-holes better not be hurting him 🥲 although I know I’m in for a wild ride. Amazing show as always!

Every midst fan will be FREAKING OUT next episode and I cant wait for everyone to witness it.

I cannot believe that on this journey, I started out excited to see which character I would identify with most. Y' know how it goes: "oh, I like this one! I want to be more like them!", or "THIS one speaks to me." and "part of me needed this person, they comfort me and for the next few years I will hear them speak to me in times of need" even "Wow, this one is an absolute BASTARD. I love them and something deep down inside of me sides with them and I know that's wrong: this one is teaching me things about myself and I HATE IT." No NO no no no. NO. Constantly pushing yourself physically, mentally, emotionally. Receiving all the proper markers of "earning enough points", "obtaining all the mandatory goals" etc. But even though you're obviously giving a herculean effort, every award is given with a heavy sigh and with no one to be proud other than yourself... and with the reminder that there is still interest to be paid. Nobody truly cares. You're truly alone. You can't ask for help. Just when you get over the latest injustice and decide that, despite it all, you think everything is going well, you get a list of just how much you suck with the promise of rejection and punishment if demands are not met. And you. Are Never. Enough. how dare you call me out like this guys. just...how do you dare? I shall live vicariously through Phineas and hope he gets what he deserves or becomes the BBEG. Now I just need to figure out which one of them will be the generous one...and which one of them is ...well ... GOOD 😉. hurray for Lark IG.

Really taking the whole 'sea of stars' to the next level there, huh? I want to pick this whole universe up and shake it like a snow globe. WHAT SECRETS DO YOU HOLD?

The Descent into darkness...in more ways than one

Hecking amazing how the world lore is unfolding before us. The explanation of the Fold blew my mind.

Phineas can't catch a break 😮

Idk why, but I had a distinct feeling, despite the narrators' reassurances that the conversation wasn't a bad thing, that there was very much a "right" and "wrong" answer... Maybe because of my own anxiety over Phineas' rejection of the deal from the Gala.

Oh gosh, after re watching the first episode I'm pretty sure the crazy beginnings of the plot is about to begin soon. This episode has really put a lot of the first episode's intro into perspective.

When the way the Fold works was revealed. Literal chills. SANDERSON level world building, I swear

Oh my word. I NEED MORE. i have devoured these videos more than once and i just. AHSHSGSH GIVE TO MEEE!! These please my brain in ways i never knew possible, im so hooked!

Oh, at first I was slightly disappointed that this is a shorter episode, but I was wrong. There's so much in this, so much information and going where it's going, oh we're in for a RIDE! I've got to say, I didn't quite understand the Fold as this is my first listen of this story, I imagined it as a sort of miasma, but it's a whole body of "stuff" and Midst floats in it? Amazing. I love the story so far, the characters and their personalities are very intriguing, getting to know their motives and what part they play, but the world and how it functions is just as interesting. I feel for Phineas. I can't wait to hear more about Mr Weep, he's mysterious and I love to hear his tone/cadence/accent. Can't help but feel he's got some real darkness waiting to come out. I'm also itching to know who Lark is. TL;DR This is awesome, can't wait for more, feels like it's about to get real good.

I thought the opening was my apartment.... you help me get through my subway journeys to and from work. This is a great series . Brilliant.

The tingles brought jangles to my skin with both hands full! The story slowly is wrapping its soft velvet gloved hand around my mind!

I am so glad I was home by myself for this one, because I YELLED at a few parts! It's such good storytelling, because even these... I guess 'slower' episodes? still have those gut-punches the same as the more action filled one. SO GOOD. Is it Wednesday yet???

Especially every time the narrators SPECIFICALLY mentioned how calm Sparr is being, how casual all this is. Like I was so anxious and didn't know why and then the performance review came and OOF. Holy shit AND THAT STINGER!?!?!? 'gotta go kill Fuse' bro I cannot

Well, that was kind of a harsh peer review from Spahr. Of course, he doesn't know about Thatch's one Caenum bead, because that would be even worse for his protegé's confidence. Sounds like things are ramping up quickly toward a climactic finish. Can't wait for more!

Oh my GOD. All the fucked up stuff with the Trust put aside (though I LOVE all of it so much, they're so EVIL in this way) the fact that the fold is an ACTUAL THING that just... exists and the planet rotates in it is amazing and I really, really, really love it. It's SO creative! Wooow. That's why I love this so much. Both the story and the worldbuilding are so amazing, either on their own would draw me in, but combine it and I am SO into all of it. Wooow. Also, these people coming to Midst is just.... that's bad news. But that's not really a surprise anymore.

All characters and plot aside, this is probably the most unique setting i've ever heard of. I don't know what kind of state of mind you need to be in where you look at day and night and its cycle in such a manner where night becomes some sort of liquid and day is when a planet rotates itself out of it, and onto the surface. And outer space is endless sky with floating crystals and planets float in night juice.

The sound design of this episode is 😗👌

Was listening in the car and during the review..... that background noise only on one side made me think a wheel bearing was starting to go. Paused the audio - just to check. Nicely mixed folks at midst.

Wait... If the moon is floating above Midst, a planet in an ocean of Pitch, then if- *When* it falls, it's going to knock the planet into the Fold and put everyone into danger. A disarray, one that only Lark will be able to fight through with her hand and experience, and the other main characters that have the power to.

My complete inability to remember names makes watching these really difficult. Spend the first minute and a half trying to remember who Thatch was until Spar showed i Up. Then couldn’t remember if Spar was the supervisor or the media man until context told me. Then no idea which Midst resident Fuse is. It’s like having dyslexia for personalities.
