Midwinter Nature Walk and Nature Journal in the Woods 

Cold, quiet, beautiful, thanks for all the birds.

I've loved this monthly woodland series and learnt a lot about the plants and birds that live there. Thanks for taking us along 🙂

Dear Alex, thank you so much for this monthly walk in your woods. It was a wonderful experience to see and learn about this place and observe the changes. In my neighborhood in California, just south of San Francisco it is quite a different feeling. Yesterday I took my. vIsiting daughter, her friend and their two dogs on my walk and we admired the structure of bare trees, but we were in single sweater and no gloves mode. On Christmas morning my granddaughter will take me to Pacific Grove where the Monarch butterflies are overwintering on pines and cypress trees. It will probably be a little chillier, but still, no frost, no snow. I wish you a peaceful, cozy holiday season and hope you keep nature journaling next year.

Have really enjoyed your monthly walks in the woods this year. Especially then when you follow up with Journalling what you have seen. It makes watching you create your pages that much more pertinent as to how you go about working out what goes on the page. Thanks for all your videos this year.

Wonderful! Feel like I’m right there. Cardinals are my favorite winter bird (New England, USA).

A lovely walk through your woods, thank you for taking us along. It's the busy mixed flocks of birds that say winter to me. Though I have been having more and more close encounters with wrens lately as well. I have a place I like to sit under a holly and that has meant lots of things dropping from higher up and showering me with tree bits as the American Robin's gobblemthe abundant berries. I loved the bit with the Redwings and the Holly in your video. One winter many years ago, not long after I had started birding a Redwing showed up in a nearby neighborhood, a very rare bird to the northwest US! It was quite the crowd pleaser, as it found the local Hawthorne, crabapple and Holly's to forage from.

Love your woodland walk and the birds in winter, Alex. Thanks for sharing with us. My favorite birds at Christmas time are native NZ Tui, whose song is lyrical and differs, depending on what the Tui has heard. They drink nectar from our flax flowers and also bird of paradise as it is summer at Christmas in NZ. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Love your videos!

Alex, Thanks for the walks, throughout the year. It's very enlightening to see the changes. I hope you continue to film and share your outings. The art and journaling videos are extremely helpful and inspirational, and the walks provide a great context. We can all adopt a spot near us where we can continue to monitor nature and the seasonal changes as the year unfolds. I also enjoy the music and video Interludes you've added to your studio work. I am curious about the video production of the walks. Whenever you are facing the camera, the sound is crystal clear. When you are walking with the camera facing forward, the sound is less clear. I was wondering if it is because you are using only an in-camera microphone while walking. Thanks and keep up the great work and sharing spirit. Cheers, Steven

Greetings from Western Australia Alex. Long time since I have visited as we come closer to Christmas and get busier with each day. I have also started volunteering at our local Community Garden so that takes up another 4 hours a week. But I'm here now and wanted to say how much I enjoyed your multi layered ramble through the woods, you need some finger and toe warmers to make things more comfortable for you, can you buy them in the UK? I love how the robins are camouflaged amongst the Beech leaves so gloriously golden. I didn't realise they stayed around all year long. They don't seem to do that here, and I love the image of whole families huddled together. In Tasmania the robins were gone as summer approached and here in WA I haven't seen a robin red breast for a while now, we do have the orange ones in the area but not sure they are around here, I think they are more coastal. I do hear the odd twitter of the blue wrens but rarely see them now either. We have the 'all blue' wrens - totally iridescent blue from head to foot with touches of teal on their wings (in Tassie they just had blue heads) but its rare to see them in the gardens as we are now well into our summer and mid 30's heat. The wrens are one of my favourite birds but I also love the family chaos of our New Holland honey eaters. Also the colourful and shy Bronze Winged Pigeons which are mostly all we see now. Our birds do not like the heat. Even the parrots and magpies have disappeared as have the ducks and their families, despite having ponds and a park at our back fence. We have had the pleasure of some rare red tailed black cockatoo's which has been wonderful. Alex I thank you for the many episodes I have enjoyed this year. I thank you for the very informative videos, the fantastic photography and I know I have much to catch up on before you head into the New Year. So I take this time to wish you and yours a very safe and warm Christmas and a very happy new year. May 2023 bring only good things your way. If I could send you some warmth I would. If I could borrow some of your gorgeous cooler weather I would do so in a magic minute. I do not like summers in WA, especially as we are now in the thick of our bushfire season, last year one came very close to town and we all had to evacuate. I am probably the only person here hoping winter comes quickly ha ha. Take care, stay well and best of wishes to you :)
