I have the collected stories of Pancake as well! And same, about hearing great things. Oh my, very interested in A Bended Circuity! Book of Fantasy does look amazing. Jealous! I’m going to read Terra Nostra with you all as well, I think, schedule allowing.

Fantastic list of books mentioned. I'm becoming more and more convinced to give Faulkner another try. Also ditto Flannery; she seemingly cannot do anything wrong, at least based on what I've read of her output.

As I turned sixty this year, was hospitalised in February and March this year and am still recovering at home I decided to collect and read books published in, given an award in or translated into English in 1962 - the year of my birth. I started on my eReader in hospital ordering the books on my phone so it has been an eclectic mix so far. I have two Carlos Fuentes books, Borges' Ficciones (translated into English in 1962) I have read an Agatha Christie, two George Simenon (in French), the second John le Carée novel, several plays by Beckett (in English), Ionesco (in French), Dürrenmatt (in German and English) and am awaiting a copy of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolfe?" which are local theatre are doing in the autumn (in German LOL - well I live in Germany after all). I now have about ninety books on my list about 10 to 15 I already owned! Including J. L. Austin - one of the more amusing mid-century British philosophers who managed to publish TWO books in 1962 even though dead for 2 years LOL

Beloved is a great choice. One of my all time favorite books! One thing that's always stuck with me from that book has been when Sethe has to pee. I had to reread and reread that part because I was fascinated how Morrison could take something mundane and make it so captivating. She's one of the greatest wordsmiths. Sula was the first book I read from her, I read it for high school and loved it. Barely remember it now though, so I may need to reread it. I do remember though learning that Morrison said her first two books (Bluest Eye and Sula) were written *for* white people, and by pandering in that way she felt they were the weakest of her novels. I certainly felt that when I read Bluest Eye, so I'm curious to see now having read so much of her work if I'd still love Sula as much as I did back then.

Please keep an eye out for The Old Gringo by Carlos Fuentes in your used bookstore hunts. I loved it. It’s also a movie with Jane Fonda and Gregory Peck. He wrote some creepy ghost stories too. Aura is a good one.
