MiG-15 Battles the Wind

This is the story of an old model that hadn't seen flight in over a decade. The 17" rubber-powered free-flight model of the MiG-15 was built in 1998, from the Dave Livesay plan. After years in storage, she has resurfaced as a fine flying model, this time over Wawayanda on 10.1.21, in less than ideal conditions. The wind was a force, but I was pleased to see her handle it, and continue on. Seems this old bird is wanting to fly again! Filmed with a Canon SX20-IS & iPhone 11 Pro. Music: "Flying the Dream" by Ashot Danielyan via motionarray.com
Model is based on this Livesay peanut plan: www.flyingacesc...

Some great flights with a difficult subject. Those swept wings combined with the huge tail of a Mig 15 make for some tight trim parameters as you remarked. But when you hit that sweet spot, it sure looks nice. Those gusty wind flights with the wild spirals and pull-outs were cool. Very nice job on the building and the framework shots were really informative for scratch builders. Thanks much!

I wonder just exactly how many targets of opportunity such as that tractor have been taken out by MiG15's? I mean it was obvious that pilot was doing evasive manuvers before finally getting within feet of the tractor before releasing the fury it's mission. Thanks for sharing!

That 1st flight was a "cardiac arrest" special .. ha ha. By the 3rd & 4th flight, she was flying well, though I kept saying "turn damn you" on the 4th flight. I noticed that your winder cranks ccw ... every winder I've ever seen or used cranks cw. You mentioned that you had a lot of tail ballast, but then shaved the prop. Perhaps a more robust prop would allow you to remove some tail ballast ?? Anyway, nice flights. I remember the weather was great on 10-1 ... I did a shoot early in the morning with one of my UAVs to get some video of a lake front (lake Erie) Ferris wheel for my channel. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
@aeromodeller1
@aeromodeller1 3 года назад
A more robust prop would require more tail ballast, increasing the weight, sink speed and moments of inertia, adversely affecting stability. The original plane had the heavy jet engine midships and swept wings, putting the CG far aft. Good for a rubber model, because you can run the motor all the way to the back. Still seems a bit nose heavy when the power comes down. The aft CG also reduces the tail and fin moments compared to a conventional layout. That in turn affects the dihedral requirement. This is a different kind of bird and standard expectations must be revised.

Thx for the comments, Bill. That's the classic Rees winder, which has the distinction of reverse winding. Many of us in the FAC have one since the late Dave Rees introduced them in the late 80s, I believe. Adding a heavier prop would only lead to even more tail weight to hit the CG. I could actually use a few more inches of rubber length to help remove the ballast...but that's a lot of rubber for a 12" hook to peg.
@billsomrak
@billsomrak 3 года назад
@@maxfliart Right on the CG remark (prop weight) .. not sure what I was thinking about ... senior moment I suspect .. ha ha. Okay on the prop winder. I still have an old 16:1 CW winder .. but all my old rubber craft need to be stripped down & recovered having been holed over many, many years of dormancy. Cheers.

How on God's beautiful green earth are you able to get 2600 turns on that little rubber band motor, nearly every time I go over 500 turns on my little guillows javelin it snaps😔
@maxfliart
@maxfliart 3 года назад
Hi Rafael. It's all about the length & width of the rubber. For the MiG-15, the motor I made is long & skinny, so 3,000 turns works, especially since it's a light weight model.

Your planes are amazing. I recently purchaced my 1st balsa and paper kit and was wondering if you have any build advice videos for beginers on your chanel. I have been building other types of models over the last 50 years. I am amazed at the detail as well as the flight times of your planes. Thanks.... Dan.

I wonder: would it be possible to build a impeller or would the rubber band cause too much trouble and turbulences? or is it an issue of size and performance?
