Photo build log of the process of building a plastic model of the MiG-17PF in the Hungarian People's Army from about 1972.
This is my second attempt to build this aircraft, this time based on the Airfix kit with some parts from the Mistercraft kit.
It is currently the only way to build a reasonably correct version of the famous 'Radar Fresco'.

Well done mate, I have had some very bad and some good Mistercraft kits, this was a great combination

Outstanding bit of surgery there, Tom! Wonder if all the Mister Craft kits are of the same quality as the Mig-17. I gather you replaced the entire canopy with the Pavla example? Excellent kit, thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the compliments! Yes, I had to replace the entire canopy with the Pavla one but I simply forgot to take photos of the replacement process. I am frankly not too happy with it as it is a bit vague and does not look absolutely right, but there is simply no better option available. And yes, MisterCraft kits are not something I would recommend to anyone unless there is no other choice.

Mistercraft's quality is a sinusoid. They only repack older kits so how good your kit is depends on how old it is (and they've got some ancient stuff). But their newer kits in 1:48 are quite decent for their price.

Hello Tom! Could you share the Tamiya acryl paints you used? What green is better for the radar radome? Thanks

@@fmorenov94 For the metal coat I am exclusively using AK Xtreme Metal paints. All other details are painted using various Tamiya acrylics. I always mix my own paints to match the actual photos and I almost never use anything directly from the jar. Mixing hues becomes quite intuitive after a while. The radome green is mainly XF-67 Nato Green with a pinch of XF-4 Yellow Green for a deeper tone, a lot of XF-8 Blue to cool it down and then a certain amount of XF-2 White to make it look sun-faded.

I need to do this as well. Mistercraft's kit is just bad. Fortunately it's cheap enough to use only one piece of it. Thanks for the idea!

Please do! :-) The radar nose of the Mistercraft is however still very incorrect. I am still hoping that Airfix will one day make a proper PF, the kit breakdown suggest that they could (if they wanted to).

Sore bat nose it is very slim , this is not correct .

The main errors with the Mistercraft PF nose is that it is almost perfectly circular, when it should be more oval. Also the central radome should not be in the exact center but much further down. Also the radome should be a bit larger and more protruding. But since I don't have a 3D printer to make my own part, there is not much I can do about these errors, sorry!
