MIG-29 Review and An Interview With A Ukrainian Pilot. Why are F-16s crucial for Ukraine?

The MIG-29 is not suited to engage small targets such as the Shahed or cruise missiles since the aircraft's avionics and radar system are not very advanced. So F-16s are critical for Ukraine as an offensive strategy and to intercept missiles and cruise bombs beyond Ukrainian territories, potentially saving the lives of thousands of civilians. We talk about this in our video interview with a Ukrainian pilot.

@@Denise-vn8wz That's not the issue, providing jets just has so many things u need with it, like maintenance, mechanics, spare parts etc. But I'm Glad they get F16. It will have to be the modern variants tho, the F16s originally are same area as mig29 so they could in theory be outdated as well, but im sure they'll be good, radar seems to be most important, especially cuz these aren't stealth like 5th gen F35 for example, which at some point i'm sure Ukraine will get too but only when war is over. That MiG warning system (RWR) only tells you where radars are, roughly, and what it might be from. F-16 radar can tell you what it is specifically, where it is specifically, how fast, how high, its relation to you positionally. It is an infinitely more powerful warplane. No, in a close in fight the MiG will do fine, but the F-16A with the MLU and F-16C have longer range missiles and radar than the MiG-29. So in the mid range fight, the F-16 will detect and launch before the MiG-29 can detect the F-16 using it's radar
@Clean97gti
@Clean97gti 11 месяцев назад
That depends very much on the pilots. The Mig-29 was a very good dogfighter. The somewhat limited range was offset by powerful engines that make it very capable. The Mig-29 turns well, out-climbs the F16 and has very good AOA. Down low in the rate fight, the F16 will beat the Mig-29 but its up to the Mig pilot to not go there. Of course, this changes as soon as you discover the F16 shot the Mig-29 down before the Mig pilot knew there was an AMRAAM with his name on it. Also, the AIM-9X missile is a murderous little beast that can turn. The Mig can shoot the upgraded Archers but I don't know if Ukraine has any of those. In a dogfight, they are closer matched than you might think. The bigger gun on the Mig will chew an F16 to pieces if it can get nose-on. But if they get into a dogfight, its because the F16 pilot screwed up and didn't shoot the Mig down before they ever merged.

F-16 Crew Chief for ten years here and 3 on the F-15 before that. Not an expert, but I read these comments and know that people have good intentions, but you don't just send F-16's over. First question is why didn't Ukraine purchase updated fighters over the last 20 years? That's a whole different question, but to the maintenance side of things. Any fighter, and especially the 16, takes an army on the ground to keep it running. 4 different avionics shops. Crew Chiefs. Weapons. Fuel. AGE. Engine shop. Hydraulic. Fab shop. Depot. There's engine cells that need to be built to test and then trim. How would you get parts? There's so much that goes into it. Then lets talk pilots. Teaching someone to fly the Viper, vs years of dog fighting and intercepts is drastically different. You'd be better off taking Polish 29's and upgrading them and then the current fleet or using SU-27's than trying 16's mid war. I mean hell, why not give them F-35's?

Any F-16 still flying today is more modern than a Mig-29 from the 1980s. There aren't any F-16s from the 1980s still in active US service and very few from the 90s. That's actually kind of an issue with them. When you start loading them up with bombs and fuel tanks, you're exerting a lot of force on an airframe that wasn't originally designed for that kind of force. The F16 was intended to be a better dogfighter than things like the F4 Phantom and the F8 Crusader. It absolutely was and is still one of the best dogfighters in service today. But in a world of HOBS missiles and ever-improving radars and detection as well as heavier and heavier loads, the F16 is starting to show the limits of her design. There's a really good post on Quora as to why the cancelled F20 Tigershark would have likely been a better choice than the F16 for the fights the US is engaging in today vs. the 1970s when they were designed.

If they were able to update the older F-16's which started test flying in 1974 according to Wikipedia why can't they update the Mig-29's to new radar and lcd screens? Wikipedia says Mig-29 first flight was in 1977 which is 3 years after the F-16.

One of the important factors and current disadvantages for Ukraine is having to fly low strike missions while Russia is flying high with their interceptor missions. Even with the same aircraft, the lower has a big disadvantage due to their missiles needing to use up energy to get to altitude which great decreases range for Air to Air engagements. This due to ground based radar with long ranges based in Russian territory and needing to stay below those. Being able to strike into Russia to deal with ground radar is critical to establish any parity or advantage in the air, and this absurd notion of not being openly allowed to strike into Russia will prevent any fair air to air battle.

Ukrainian Migs can only use short and medium range missiles while Russians are lobbing long range missiles at them from the cover of their AA network. With F-16 Ukrainians would get access to longer range missiles allowing them to shoot back. At the moment Ukrainian offensives are having trouble dealing with Russian helicopters and so in order to make combined arms truly effective they need better aircraft to deal with air threaths.

The Ukrainians already have updated Mig-29s they received from Poland. The ability to drop JDAMs in strike missions is a big benefit. The big problem that the F16s will help with is being able to engage threats further away with AMRAAMs. Russia's anti-air capability limits the older Ukrainian fighters who have nothing to shoot back. The bigger help though has been the Patriot systems showing up in Ukraine. Russian Su-27s and Su-35s aren't as big a threat anymore.

Also the Soviet era missiles Ukraine is using are outdated. They have to maintain a link with the plane to guide them to the target. So when the pilot fires the missile he has to continue to fly behind the missile which makes him an easy target. Even a few degrees of deviation from course can break the link between the plane and the missile and the missile just flies off to who knows where. With the F16 they will have the "fire and forget" type of missiles that have a guidance system of their own. Get Ukraine the F16's NOW.

It is clear that its a F-16 promotion video! USA is desperate to get new customer for this vintage aircraft. MiG29 has been drastically upgraded ( not sure about Ukraine) by India with modern Early warning receiver, Electronic counter measure systems and improved radar. The pilot said their mig 29 can see only 78 kms? Then it must be the very first slot produced in 1980s. UpG grade mig 29 can see upto 160 kms and can launch both air to air and air to ground missiles.its radar can see 360 degree and helmet mounted sight allows the pilot to shoot without turning the whole aircraft but just turning his head towards the enemy and auto lock.

Ukraine flies the MiG-29A, it has no reliable supply of spare parts or ammunition for the plane. That's why they are looking at F-16's. not because it's the best choice, but because it's available in the numbers they need. Honestly they are looking for 60+ planes that they expect will all be destroyed in a year. They are at war, they will lose planes, they've already lost 1/2 of their MIG-29's, they'll lose more before the year is out

The only thing that holds the MiG 29 back is the weapon systems. I dont think Ukraine has the modern mig 29 variants but rumor has it Ukrainian 29's were trying to use AMRAAMS since they were in low stock on the R27. I highly doubt they had access to the r77. F16 would give them better comfort, visibility, awareness with datalink more lethal weaponry (AMRAAM). F16 out classes the MiG 29 in radar and weapons capability. Flight characteristics really comes down to the pilot.

MiG-31 was designed to take down SR-71's and B-1 Lancers/FB-111's flying nap of the earth. It is why Blackbird's and the Aardvark were retired. But Foxhounds cannot turn tightly in close in dogfights and the MiG-29 would shoot them down easily. What they are more concerned with taking on are SU-27's and SU-35's, the equivalent to our F-15 and somewhat the F-22; based on the later's thrust vectoring capability. MiG-29's are easy lunch to them. They want F-16's with AMRAAM Deltas, but they should get Charlies at the very most, IMO.

The biggest issue Ukraine will have with the F-16, and if the stories are true about Ausses selling F-18 to them as well, is the operating bases. Soviet and Russian Federation designed fighter craft were designed to operate from poor maintained fields. They have door that close to seal there air intakes and panels on top that open to keep debris out of the engines. U.S. fighters do not, keep debris off the runway take a great deal of work, otherwise they are going to destroy turbines.
