MIG Welder Repair - How to 

Thank you for the close up image of the disassembled gun. I had to change a clogged liner and did not pay much attention to the switch assembly in the gun, i.e. I should have taken a picture before I removed the switch assembly. I reassembled the switch and apparently it is in the contactor closed position so the feeder motor is running continuously. I will open the gun and make the necessary adjustments or hack a micro-switch in there. J.D. Murray Quelab, Albuquerque, NM USA

Not related to your issue but related to preventative maintenance for cheap welders without a steel liner. tore up the plastic liner on my old mig years ago and learned this useful tip . When you install a new spool of wire take a minute and grab a fine hand file and deburr the end or round it and feed it manually till end of wire comes out the gun,, Too many people toss a spool on and cut the wire with snips and feed the wire by using the trigger and drive this pushes the wire through the gun with a lot of force with sharp wire gouging the liner and pretty much doing years of wear and tear on the liner in mere seconds, cut mig wire and drag it across your hands the edges are really sharp, if you follow this procedure you will most likely never wear out a liner ever,

I somehow snapped the liner for the wire in mine and had to replace it. I did with a beefy wire that barely fits through the neck on a chicago electric 151 but very happy with the result. Cheesy thin spring stock material no bueno.

Anyway! sick how people go on and on about "I heard this that you can get a free unlimited fix from this company if you buy thier tools" and then "nope" And idiots wonder why thiers upset people!!! Unrelated, Thanks for providing somthing worth while! Got the tool fixed, sketchy setup, almost the same as that tool your fixing there, just had some open metal here to make it appear as if thier was a contact area and thier wasn't! The Mig is doing great not counting the little miss hap i had with it, other than that it's been welding great I am going over all my arc welds and fixing them all up, including the spindles. I am not used to the splatter though when welding I never had that with the Arc. I will be more than likely doing a review on it this weekend. anything in particular you would like to see?

BTW How is that mig ? Still waiting on your welding review but as I can see it appears to be a good welder, I assume you welded the go kart spindles with the 170a ? Have you tried it with gas yet or just using flux core ? Have fun !

Yeah i am pretty sure it is left handed, i'll have to look online the "Princess Auto" store here in Canada doesn't seem to carry them, just the male ones that i showed off in the video. I'm sure i can find some on ebay as you said. Thanks for the offer mighty kind of ya.

If your pretty good with your hands like me & most hobby people. If your not going to take the Lincoln Electric defuser that holds the contact tip in place back for a refund or exchange you can cut off the male end start drilling a little bit at a time make sure you don't drill the hole too big cuz you will either make it weak or split it. Then after you have done that just take a Tap & Rethread tool kit find the right size threaded bit an start making threads. Simple as cut, drill, & rethread. If you cut it off and there's already a hole just go get a two way pipe plug. Outside has threads & the inside has threads. That'll work very well

Not one vid how to change the swan neck.my Migmate 150 dual purpose welder (quite old) needs a new swan neck fitted,it goes into a brass block in the handle,does this unscrew?or have I got to renew the whole handle.ive tried unscrewing But no movement,I don’t want to damage it,any advice would be appreciated,thanks.

So I have a similar problem, I was welding and at one point I held the gun a little too close because I was in a corner and trying to get the right angle. But anyways the arc from the wire traveled back and welded to the tip and partially on the spring. So I pulled it apart and and I was able to pull the wire out of the tip and I cleaned it back to perfection and I was able to pull it off of the internal spring and I had to file the spring down because it was rough with a burr. So now everything works BUT the little internal spring is too long now. So now its nigh impossible to push the spring in far enough to screw on the tip. Very frustrating and I dont know what to do. I think I should cut some it off, but I dont know if it will be too short afterwards.

I noticed everyone takes the cap that goes on the end of the gun to hold the shealding gas do u run it with out it when doin flux core

Hi, I just got one of these on sale at HF for $169. I was on the fence about it for awhile but decided I will never use it enough to afford a Miller. First thing up is I know you need 240v power and the actual plug on the welder cord is 3 wire 50 amp. Is that postive-neutral-ground or double hots and ground? I saw that it says 20 amp on the box but does this mean you can use a standard 20amp breaker or a double pole 20amp? By the cord having a 50amp plug does this mean I also need a 50amp double pole breaker? I was hoping to just use 10/2 wire and a 30amp double pole which I have on hand and make an extension cord with 10/2 wire and 30amp 3 prong plugs.

how does the mig wire get its power ? i saw the cable that connects to the gun, but does the mig wire just contact the tip and get its power. ?

i got a Chicago electric 90 amp mig welder. My problem is, it turns on and feeds the wire but wont ark, or weld. what could the problem be?

It might be a little hard to find a replacement diffuser for that mig gun, If the diffuser has left hand threads then your in luck and you can find century and clarke parts all over ebay and the internet. If your tip isn't a lefty then you might be out of luck and having to take that thing back, If you can't find one then let me know I can score one of those and I will look in the shop , I might have one since I got parts for those welders or I can fabricate one and send it via post.

Defuser's are very inexpensive to replace, as compared to the time spent on trying to repair one.

Does it rlly need that long piece or is it rlly needed

Thanks for this video ... I was trying to find a schematic for inside of torch to see how main voltage wire was attached And you showed it in great detail Thank you P.S. If the solder dosent work because of heat . Try some silver solder it has a much higher heat tolerance

Hi, I have a 170 mig welder. Welder won't arc. All power is good. Good ground. Light on top center of welder does not light. Machine only had one spool of wire run through it. What do you suggest could be the problem. Thanks so much, Bill

mine is spray welding does any one know why it shouldn't have enough power to do this

I not going to comment on your repair as you know it sucks If you got it hot enough to do that than you was way over your duty cycle. I think its 20% my friend has the 110 volt machine and that is his duty cycle. That means for every 10 minutes you can only weld 2min. But what i really want say.STOP CALLING IT A MIG!!!!!!. iFI IT DOES NOT HAVE A SHIELDING GAS OR A PLACE TO HOOK ONE UP THAN IT IS A WIRE FEED WELDER!!!! MIG = METAL INERT GAS
