MIG WELDING WITH AND WITHOUT GAS - WHAT WELDS LOOK LIKE IF YOU RUN OUT OF GAS

In this episode of the Longevity Learning Lab, we show the differences between MIG welding with GAS and MIG welding without GAS. Check it out.
Some Info on Welding:
How to weld with flux cored wire
Flux cored is an economical way to weld mild steel if the welder is used only occasionally. Apart from that it's only real advantage over mild steel wire with shielding gas is that it can be used outside in moderate wind conditions.
It is difficult to use while learning MIG welding as the smoke and flux make it difficult to see what's going on. Also the flux doesn't conduct electricity so you have to be careful not to weld over the same piece twice once it's cooled.
Welding without gas
Where ordinary mild steel mig welding wire needs an inert gas shield to prevent it from oxidising when melted, gasless MIG wire has a flux core which forms the shield around the weld to keep oxygen out.
It's the flux that causes all the weld spatter in the photo and the light coloured crust (slag) on top of the weld.
The slag is easy to remove with a wire brush (apart from around the very edge of the weld), and the resulting weld is reasonably neat.
Immediately after the weld is applied a protective coating of slag bubbles up, which means you can't actually see what the weld pool is doing. That's a big downside of gasless welding. In ordinary gas shielded welding you can adjust speed and technique depending on what the weld pool is doing.
My approach was practice on some scrap to get the settings right, then weld consistently and hope for the best.
The arc seems brighter than for mild steel welding and the weld spatters and gives off white smoke.
A flat zigzag torch movement pulling the torch seems to work well with flux cored wire. It prevents the arc dipping back too much into the cooling weld pool (the slag would stop the arc).
The arc is otherwise very stable, but the slag does not conduct so any tack welds would also need to be cleaned up before welding.
The advantage of gasless (other than saving on gas bottle rental) is the ability to weld in windy conditions.
I tried it outside in a gusty wind, and as the photo shows the weld turned out just as good as the one I did inside. Normal gas shielded welding would have struggled in the slightest breeze.
Welder polarity
The welder should be set up with a positive earth and negative electrode for gasless welding. This is supposed to put more power into melting the wire. I tried welding with the wrong polarity and it seemed to work just as well, though others have reported a huge difference.
Cored wires that have nothing to do with gasless
There are two other types of cored wire that shouldn't be confused with gasless. The first is "dual shield" sometimes used on very thick metal for improved weld toughness. It doesn't have enough gasless flux to shield the weld so is used with shielding gas. The second odd type is "metal cored" wire which is filled with ground metals that can be tuned to give all sorts of properties, again requiring a gas shield.

This is useful for a novice. I've got a gas/gasless mig welder and I have switched from flux core to gas using a hobby gas canister. There's no gauge on it so it's nice to see from this video whether the gas is running or not by the quality and sound of the weld. It's a small canister so I don't want it to waste the gas so there's a fine margin of when it is on or not. It's on 0.9mm steel so I don't need too much penetration but gas is much cleaner. Cheaper to watch this vid than waste a ton of gas. Thanks

I like the calm demener in the teacher's explanations of gas vs gasless mig welding. These comments remind me of those high school students in class. Comments on youtube of the loud know it all students in class vs the people out in the world that need to learn for the first time. I guess 90 percent of the comments on you tube are from those people that already know how to weld Great. Why watch the video instead go weld yourselfs a middle finger and sit on it grow up trolls. Very helpful I've been using fluxcore for years now on home truck stuff etc and thinking of finally switching to c25 setup. Interesting chemical response with and without gas which makes it easy to know if you run out and would also need to switch back to fluxcore to finish weld if you don't have a spare tank or time to refill. Im pretty good without the gas but with gas would be cleaner which equates to less project time.

Normally if no gas the welds full of holes, porosity, mig with gas is good, clean welds but if the breeze blows the shielding gas away, porosity, that's why Flux core wire has an advantage.

Nickosupra clearly you have not welded because if it is good settings they weld can hold, this is coming from someone who had to rely on an unshielded weld on part of his motorbike frame that cracked... she is still fine to this day 10 years on. Structural welds sure it wont be as good but it will still hold, but for small stuff like the occassional crack on metal it is fine.

🤣 flux core welding (without gas) is not temporary. I have the Hobart 140 Handler and have welded so much with flux core wire AND a lot with solid wire (with gas) ....they have BOTH held up the exact same. I have never had the flux core come apart. Gas has just provided a cleaner weld and MAYBE a tad deeper penetration....IF THAT! Side by side they have both held up EQUALLY!!! 😂

@@noobinho8882 Bro, Honestly I have a 220 Tomb Stone Lincoln Stick welder, and while I love my stick welder I feel my Hobart 140 can hang just fine. One day I was welding some jacks on a construction trailer and ran out of sticks. I pulled out my Hobart 140 and finished the last two jack on the FRONT of the trailer which is the heaviest and it has held up fine, 2 years later. You being a DYI guy and jumping in to welding things here and there you will be fine with a Hobart 140 no issues. Your first task is to jump on some scrap angle iron and weld you some beads to get the hang of your feed speed. I would not worry about gas, its more of a shield to keep your beads pretty and some say "Help Penetration" but I have had no issues with my welds with my Hobart 140 and I VERY rarely use gas. If I do its ONLY because I am doing something for myself or someone else and I'm being Boujee about it LOL You will be fine, it takes time and practice so be patient and dont give up! Weld you some scrap metal together and do some stress tests on it. Best of luck my guy!

@@noobinho8882 I’ve only ever used stick for some exhaust stuff and to brace some control arms and it’s worked perfectly but I’ve recently bought a cigweld 135 mig. If you have your polarity set properly it’s not bad at all, I mean yeh there’s splatter and shit from the smoke but it all cleans up with a wire wheel on an angle grinder just fine. And there’s no way gasless is weaker than gas because that’s just stupid.

I mig all the time without gas and I have never had a problem.. Most of the projects that I do are not hyper critical for structural stability and or great looking work so it doesn't really matter.. But I will say that I do like laying a bead with the gas because it looks 100 times better than not having the gas.. I am in the mechanical - electrical field so I get to fab up alot of stands, cages, and basic structural supports for conduit, transformers, feeds, panels and disconnects and most of the time I can tack weld everything together and lay a bead, clean it up and move on to the next thing.. I do alot of quick and dirty/easy fabrication but I will make it look good when I know it will be in a heavy traveled area.. When I know the welding work that I am doing will be seen by anyone I use gas because it is a night and day comparison when using and not using gas..

Stick tends to get used for medium to high penetration and in the field where it is inconvenient to cart around gas bottles and block wind all the time. Stick is also in some ways less sensitive to material condition and settings than other processes. It's not as fast as GMAW. MIG/MAG (GMAW) is gas shielded so no slag to clean, and can be burnt very quickly for production environments. It tends to work best for low to medium penetration applications. When deeper penetration is required, many shops use dual-shield flux core which uses both gas shielding like GMAW in addition to a flux inside or outside the wire that leaves a slag. TIG is _really_ slow, but offers a lot of control and is also gas shielded, so no slag; it's occasionally used to make pipeline root passes. I'm interested to hear what "all things equal" means to you in this context. The processes necessarily run at different voltages, so "same amps" for instance doesn't mean same power delivered or heat into the work piece. You could try welding the same joint in the same material thickness, but various settings on each process can deliver drastically different penetrations and burn rates. The selection of process is more based on what environment and time constraints are, as with the right equipment, you can pretty much use any process for any weld, albeit not efficiently or easily.

FCAW creates gas shielding from its flux core. Arc welding generates gas shielding from the coating around the rod. No you're not special because your HF welder runs fine you're burning FCAW. I'm amazed how many people are running welders without knowing the absolute basics. Do yourself a favor and don't use chlorinated brake cleaner to clean your metals. That's probably why some of you think you're running mig gasless.

seems to me gas welding is with the absence of an electrical arc , mig or tig is using both gas welding (different shielding metals) , and arc welding is just with an electrical arc no shielding gases so confused seems like you can do it any way you want and it would come out fine as long as you new what the equivalent volt/amp , wire speed , or inhert gas ratio's or electrode wires you should beable to jump between any type of machine arc , mig/tig , or gas and get the same results. Not to bash you but welding in different directions with or without gas will produce a visably different weld in general

Hi i ihave a problem with my mig weld. I just bought a new gas bottle. When i start to weld with With the correct settings The seam is a good time but a little bit of time will start to ripple and will affect how gas should not be when it comes. what to do?

+Kleo 84 Not necessary, there are already videos made by excellent welders who are very skillful, knowledgeable and know what they are talking about - if you can not determine who these are then it is an academic point anyway.

Folks, the only useful purpose of this video is to demonstrate what happens when you are welding with a standard GMAW (MIG) process, and for some reason you lose your gas coverage. Either your tank runs out, or you are in a stiff breeze, or a shop fan is blowing your way, whatever the reason. Lets not get our panties in a bunch.

I welded a fillet weld and forgot to turn on the gas how long do you think it will hold for?
@wilhelmjohansson1643
@wilhelmjohansson1643 3 года назад
depends on its loads really, and the bonding to nearby material. You can't know for sure if you don't cut it open and look. :)

You cannot MIG without gas, period. Metal Inert Gas is a process not a welder type. The type of welder is wire feed
