People just don't understand how GREAT "Phillippe Wynne" was. And how much of what he did that wasn't on the lyric sheet. That man's voice was an intrument.. This was my childhood. The "Amazing Spinners"..
@@williamalexander5581 Yep! That's why I'm here 7/20/20 Baby! That audience dead! Cause baby I would've tried my best to make it up to that stage and dance with them! This song touches my Soul Gives me the same feeling it did when I was a kid first hearing it.
I think Phillipe Wynne was one of music's best improvisational singers, perhaps no one better. Even though he died years ago, I only recently read of his passing. RIP Phillipe.
His death was so tragic!! He really wanted to sing funk! So joining Parliament Funkadelic wasn’t quite what he expected. His signature voice will always be remembered!!
This is one of the best live performances I've ever seen..I remember seeing this!! Phillipe Wynne use to visit the folks who lived across the street from us, when I was growing up in Detroit. Unfortunately those people were drug dealers and when we put two and two together we realized why he spent time with those heathens. That man was always nice and extended pleasentries to everyone who would come up to his blue cadillac--he spoke in that high pitch way that he sang in...What a talent!
What a performance to kick off the Grammys! I remember watching this when I was a youngster. Gave them a standing O from my living room. It's amazing that the string of hits these guys had during the early 70's didn't produce more awards and accolades. My all time favorites just ahead of the 4 Tops.
35 YEARS AGO TODAY JULY 14TH,1984....GOD TOOK ONE OF THE GREATEST VOICES BACK TO HEAVEN......…. PHILLIPE WE STILL LOVE AND MISS YOUR TALENTS....REST IN PEACE :)
This is amazing my husband was at that concert I’m from the Bay Area Berkeley California and Oakland is just connected my husband love this man I had never seen this performance here at 70 years old I missed a good old days the best music in the world it was a good time I love the way that audience was in the spirit Stevie was jumping what amazing Performance
Yes, he was truly a great performer, and a great person. I had the awesome pleasure of meeting him in the '80's when had left the Spinners, and had just come off performing with the Funkadelics. One of the most down to earth brothers you'd ever want to meet. We found that we had common acqaintances, that came as a surprise. His voice and charisma was sorely missed with the Spinners.
Stevie helped get the Spinners their start-even played drums on their early recordings. And this performance shoulda sealed the Grammy. And an Emmy, too!
The late great Phillipe Wynn, wow! There will never be another. I remember being a shortly and seeing them on sound stage, I knew they were great as a kid. Phillipe wynn will fall in line with the other great performers of our time.
Man, seeing this just makes me realize how far POP music in general, R&B in particular and the GRAMMYS have fallen in the last generation. Nobody puts on performances like this anymore. These days its all about SPECTACLE!
The feeling these guys must've had when they hit this Thom Bell-Atlantic peak, after all those years in the margins...well, it must've been something like watching this clip: joy and mighty love indeed. Spinners had the best writing in soul at the time too, and it makes me happy to see one of their esteemed contributors in our midst. I learned a lot from the liner notes for all those great Rhino reissues, Mr. Hawes. Respect!
I had the fantastic experience of meeting them in 2004 in Epcot, there was still 4 of the original group performing they were fantastic, they were also very kind to me they all signed a tee shirt and other items, the best bit was having my photo taken with them. It hands pride of place in my house and there is not a day that when I look at it all the beautiful memories of all my family watching their show. They were bought up on soul music and the Spinners are all our favourite's. Thank you
Amen! 7/20/20 That's why I always come back here and go with him! Like I commented , if I was there I would've tried my best to make it up there. The others left. I would've stayed right there , dancing until he was done!😁
In 1977 I saw the group in NY. Phil Wynne brought down the house....the place was going crazy. I remember when Bobby introduced the group members at the end of the show...when he got to Phil, he said "dynamic entertainer" or something like that...there was a roar of the crowd that I will never forget. The Spinners were great in that era, and Phil was one of a kind - never to be forgotten.
This is one of the most classy groups from the 70s to date era!! The industry should consider bringing back this type of talent and performance. R&B and Hip Hop is slowly dying with the junk they are playing now a days!
Another #1 hit for The Spinners on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 287th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. It also hit #20 on the Top 40 charts and #19 in Canada.
when this song first came out it got a lot of play on the radio. but i didn't think it was so good at the time. and i know now that it's because i wasn't ready to appreciate this level of music. because it sounds powerful now. another gem from the early-mid 70s era. good job!
Wow, this is one hell of a live performance... I sure hope they won the Grammy that night, not only for this awesome song but for this spectacular performance too... This Phillpe Wynne had a mighty awesome baritone voice... Obviously, The Spinners were one of the greatest R&B groups of all time... They were before my time however, I recall my dad loving two groups during his lifetime, The Spinners & The legendary O'Jays :)
Yes he is. It a young Rodney Stepp from Indianapolis Ind. He was the Keyboard and HB3 organ player for the Spinners for Years. That's also him on the live version at the Apollo. The Bass Player is Rodney Vorhis from Indianapolis, Ind.
I saw THE SPINNERS every time that they performed at the APOLLO THEATER. EACH PERFORMANCE WAS GREATER THAN ONE BEFORE. SEEING THEM WAS ABSOLUTELY A DREAM COME TRUE. THE GROUP WAS FANTASTIC AMD PHILLIPE WAS DYNAMIC. I REALLY HAD A GREAT CRUSH ON HIM. MIGHTY LOVE CAME OUT IN 1972. THIS IS 2021 AND I STILL LOVE THIS SONG. I WATCH THE OLD VIDEOS AS WELL.
I don’t know why this joyous performance brought a tear to my eye. Probably because there will never be another like it. Nothing against modern stars- they work hard too, but this is perfection.
Much like the group Chicago, each group had the person that was the soul of the group. Phil was the soul of the Spinners, Bobby did his best to Keep it going. The good thing is the Spinner always got great replacements and grow each time. I would love to see them do it again !!
Philippe is pure magic, feeling, taste, soul, spirit. You can NOT teach that in school. Wish he would’ve stuck around longer, but what he left behind is a whole lot of brilliance!
This is one of my favorite songs by the spinners. I'm fortunate to come arcoss such a great performance like this. It places such a huge smile across my face thanks!
Whoever posted this, I thank you! I love so much about this video, when they faked the audience out, thinking they were done, and Phillipe ran all over the place touching & shaking hands, and the Spinners chasing after him! Love Stevie Wonder on the front row, just clapping & rocking with them.
This IS ONE OF THE GREATEST Songs & Live Performances ! So Real If you are In Love Hold on to Them and ENJOY every MOMENT ! Be Loving & Forgiving cause you are Blessed to Love & to Be Loved ! The Greatest Love of all ! If I were 2 Pass right Here Right Now I'd Be Happy for I HAVE lived to LOVE AND TO bE LOVED ! tHANK YOU mY PRECIOUS PRECIOUS AWESOME SUPREME CREATOR !
This was such an amazing and entertaining performance... It really showed Phillipe Wynne's personality and the versatility of the group.. And how can The Grammys have the nerve to invite them to perform this song and not even give them the award....I mean that performance topped it off!
Thanks so much for posting this! I saw them many times in the 70s and am so thankful. They were such great, consumate entertainers...I still listen to their double live album often. Phillipe was one of a kind, and the group's stageshow was the epitome of 70s soul.
I want you to know what wonderful and humbling feeling it is to look back and to know that you were a part of making music history. I do appreciate knowing that you and so many others made this song a 'Soul Music' staple. This is so great what has come of it because of of your support and that you all have kept this song alive for so long. Thank you! Bruce Hawes, Writer
Now THIS is how award shows used to be. Nice clean cut entertainment WITHOUT a bunch of antics, great singing, choreography and a kick ass band to boot!
great performance! i wasnt born yet but my mom told me about these guys and she said you haven't experienced good music until you listen to "classic" r&b soul music like this. she was right, im 29 years old and get more enjoyment out of oldies more than i do the newbies. absolutely great and im age 29 now!!
Mr. Hawes, I just want to thank you, Mr. Jefferson, Mr. Simmons and, of course, the great Mr. Thom Bell for the MIGHTY LOVE LP. Thirty-six years later, it still rates as one of the greatest R&B albums of ALL TIME! Today's generation couldn't even come close. Thanks again for the great music and memories!
Watching this makes me feel so wonderful inside. I love the song but it's watching this very performance and the joy these guys share, esp. Phillipe Wynne, that makes me feel so good. It's like watching and listening to sunshine.
time should have frozen around this particular tune....so little in the last 25 years compares with its soul-stirring arrangement, its inherent church groove and of course, the ad-libbing of PW...thank you Mr's Hawes, Jefferson and Simmons!
vorsprung1.....thanks for this excellent post. I loved the Philippe Wynne era of SPINNERS hits. He was one of a kind and that voice was unique. All time periods of this great group gave us great music, but for me PHILIPPE was the Bomb. R.I.P. to all of the SPINNERS soul masters, that left us way too early and much appreciation to the ones that still keep their musical legacy alive.
