Interesting, because of (one of) the first sightings in the West of the Mig-25 ( @ 52:07 ) : one R and some P models. This knowledge, together with the performance of the Mig-21 during the Vietnam war, made the development of the American F-X air-superiority fighter (later named F-15 Eagle) even more of a priority.
I have the funny story: My first apartment in Boston was 1687 Commonwealth Ave.; I used to go to a Russian deli across the street near Chansky's Market (1989). They were honored with my presence, as I was the only American who regularly shopped there. Their cold cuts, breads, cheeses, etc. were superior to the processed garbage the USA sells. They would go down to Brooklyn once a week to re-up supplies; I would help with heavy items from the basement. The men would treat me to vodka behind the counter, and I was honored. One day, I noticed a beautiful military cap on the shelf, and I asked the owner was this his? He replied that it had been his during his service to his country. I asked, "So what did you do in the military?" His reply, "I flew MIG against United States in Vietnam..." "Oh..," I said, "May I have another vodka?"
@@nicholasmaude6906 and that was when the world discovered that the supposed Soviet super fighter was only designed for speed and intercepting hypersonic bombers that don't exist (US cancelled) and its engines had a short life (hence the mass produced number of these MiGs)
I was curious about the phrases towards the end of the video, so I used Google translate to find out. The narrator says "may the skies always be clear", but flashing on the screen is "glory to soviet aviation", "glory to the soviet people", "glory to the communist party and soviet union", and "glory to the great October".
@@JeffreyWilliams-dr7qe Because MiG-23s and MiG-27s were like literally 30-40 years outdated and met an opponent who had the numerical superiority and modern fighters
This is a treasure; Russians know how 2 film, altho' the campfire singing is a bit too 'strength-thru-joy' 4 me; this bare metal super-stovepipe era is one of the great periods of Russian aviation. I would love 2 have seen Tex Johnson get his hands on an IL-62. And some great music 💜. T-44 tank abuse! I want 1 of those twin SA-4 Ganef track rigs parked in my driveway, just as a message 2 the neighbors. And Yakovlev rated a kick in the gooch; such a workplace bitch! 🎱
The B&W shots in the beginning were historical films, if you’re referring to those. Rest of the film is in (faded) color. Maybe B&W is used elsewhere in the film for effect, I can’t remember every shot.
Had anyone else thought to film fighter pilots from that angle before (looking up from the bottom of the instrument panel, the pilot's face lit by the sun and the horizon in the background) or is this another one of the cool movie things Russia invented
There are oodles of flight training flims pre-1941 in America for pilots to watch that show that angle. And then there are uncountable numbers of films that show it during WW2 and on-wards.
Yet it was cheap and work enough. Always Soviet planes the worst of the world, well look at Vietnam instead. NVA pilots slap hard constantly upon US Army / Air Force and US Navy / Air Force over the North of the 17th parallel. Outdated weapons falls upon hands of skilled NVA & it turned to true fighting machine as it was intended to. Don't look at the Middle East when Arab states face Israel. They got better weapons, yet they lost due to lose the initiative and lacking tactics to use it. Also, "not decent aircraft" would played crucial role in the Soviet 1943-1945 campaigns in WW2 which lead to the downfall of the 3rd Reich & the death of Kwantung Army.
