Mihail Jora's Sonata for Viola and Piano, op. 32 (1951)
Piano: Lory Wallfisch
Viola: Ernst Wallfisch
I. Allegro Moderato 00:00
II. Andante Teneramente con Espressione 07:46
III. Allegro Risoluto 14:00
Date of Recording: 12 September 1957 (live recording for the Aufnahme Venedig Festival)
Recording taken from the "Lory Wallfisch Remembers: A Festival of Romanian Music" CD, EBS label.
Although not a perfect rendition - tempi indications as well as dynamics and expression are often ignored - it does have many beautiful moments, and, if nothing else, conveys the beautiful lyricism imbued with the essence of Romanian folk music that is found in Jora's musical language. That being said, overall the performance could have had much, much more energy - 1st movement is about 15 BPM slower than what Jora suggests, as well as the 3rd. In any case, a masterpiece of the repertoire, and one that should be known much more. This upload tries to make justice to that.
