“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” ― Oscar Wilde, Lady Windermere's Fan Took me a while until I remembered what about the chorus seemed so familiar.
Mika specifically changed it to Good guy instead of just gay guys because it's not about the "gay guys" persé. It's about the men who blurred the borders, changed the rules of the game. The men who did what they want, and didn''t give a damn about what people thought. James Dean, Bowie, Warhole, and all the others he mentioned, they didn't compromise, didn't try to fit to some norm society put upon them, and that's what this song is about, and that's why I love it.
When I heard that David Bowie had passed away today, I thought of this song and I think that this song might be a tribute to him. Thanks Mika for this wonderful song.
I feel like the "gay guys" in this song aren't necessarily talking about actual homosexual people but people who helped pave the way for sensitivity, emotion and qualities that are not exclusively macho to be more ideal in our age. One of the things I lament about growing up identifying as gay, is that I didn't find many male role models who were more emotional and feeling in the way that I felt. So I often looked to female role models. I think whats important to realize is that our role models are really important, and certain role models can be confusing to us. That's what I love about this song. It asks an important question. Who are the MALE role models in our society that make it okay to be "gay" without being homosexual.
Melody that’s beautiful. I lost several friends to AIDS. Some of their parents had rejected them when they told them they were gay. These were the loveliest of men and I cannot imagine a parent rejecting their child for this. So! I am so happy your mom loves you and believes in you. Thankyou for sharing... Have a beautiful life... 💚🧚♀️
@Anonymous User Wish you all the best. It's not something to do under pressure. Hope you'll find a way, and if not - you'll have people around you that will make you happy and proud of who you are.
1:28 This moment makes me so sad. David Bowie was not already dead, but it's like Mika already know that one of his idols was gonna fly soon, look at his expression when he say "Thank you Bowie for my dreams", that's stunning.
This is why i love Mika so much. His lyrics are so genuine, they are expressing real emotions. This song is just as beautiful as many others made by this amazing artist. He has been making music for many years and he stayed true for the whole time. One of the best singers of our generation!
I totally agree with you, I love him, he's one of my favourite singers. He is so a real, direct, simple person, not someone false. His music talks to everyone, is not some popular music that se hear everywhere.
im so proud of him for being so comfortable and out now :') this is really inspiring, im so happy for his career and that he's still out here making music and being himself. this is a really important video :'))
he is amazing, i love him, but theres a lot of cool pop music nowadays, you just need to find it, but you don't get the meaning of song, you know peace, just love, where have all the good guys and girls gone?, don't critized other people, music, countries, just saying
(I'm re-reading this comment three years after posting it, all I can say is that I can't express how thankful I am to Micheal for being the soundtrack of my early teenage years. It felt like having a true friend by my side, someone to relate to when struggling to accept myself and, later, my sexuality. Reading this old comment from a younger me made me cringe a bit, but it also made me smile because it means I've grown, and I'm glad I could grow with Mika. ♡) It all started two years ago. I was listening to music on Tv and there was this song. I didn't know Mika, but, after seeing the video I felt so relaxed, even if I didn't understand the lyrics (I'm italian) Then I forgot that experience, but a month later Mika was on an Italian tv programme called "Gli italiani hanno sempre ragione" (that means "Italians are always right), I saw him in live, and I fell in love. Then I forgot him again and I haven't listened to his songs for a lot of time, but this morning, thanks to my best friend(who loves Ariana Grande) I listened Popular Song and we sang together while we were walking home. Now I'm listening to the song that made me fall in love and I can't believe it's from 2 years ago. Now I'm crying for happiness . Thank you Matt. Thank you Mika.
Something similar happened to me when I was in high school I liked the lollipop song but I did not know who sang it because the video is an animation I met mika when I saw it with Ariana Grande and from there I started to listen to her music greetings
I'd argue he is very well known, the older songs prove that, millions of views! I think he has done very well for himself. He deserves more popularity, yes, but he has plenty already :)
B1A4LUV I heard he's been pretty much blacklisted from UK radio, which would would explain why he doesn't seem to get much airplay at the moment in English speaking countries.
What a song and beautiful matching video. Mika is almost too good and pure for this world. A perfect human being, as far as I know, I mean. Thanks Mika for being you.
On t'aime❤️❤️
I have this song in my playlist. One day my phone went crazy and everything what I had was deleted, but not this song. So I was listening it whole day and not even got bored.
I think there's a little Freddie Mercury in this video that no one has mentioned. Hence, the crown and the robe, like Freddie used to wear on stage. And he was the best gay/bi guy who ever lived. Mika does mention him in Grace Kelly and I know that Freddie was a huge influence on him. And they both possess such an incredible range and the loveliest of voices. Love this!! So ingenious and clever!! Freddie would've loved it!
here the words of the song:): It's not the cowboys that are missing anymore, that problem was already old in '94,don't be offended this might seem a little wrong, where all the gay guys gone?
First listen: haha, it's so witty how Mika plays with the words gay guys/good guys, I see what you did there ;) Second listen: oh, the chorus is beautiful Third listen: wow, there's so much in this song, it makes me shiver and cry Now, I show this song to my friends to see: Mika is a genius!
ugh MIKA!! It's been almost 10 years! thank for you for everything! your music has helped me get through rough times and my life is finally turning around. I'm glad your music was and is in my life! I wish you nothing but happiness :')
Smooth-Insomniac once you've been sucked into the mika freak club, there's really no getting out... you could not listen to him for 10 months, but you'll always come back to him, it's a curse.. A good curse
+bellemag_ literally I first heard him when I was nine loved him then I don't know what happened and I forgot about him then I had a dream abt grace Kelly now 7 years later im back to stay
I've always loved this song, but I hadn't noticed, until now, how Amazing the video was, as well. So simple and stunning, probably one of the best I've ever seen.
honestly as much as i want him to be so big, i like where he is currently. i mean just from this comment section, you can barely find any hate comments because he's not big enough to get them. reading comments on every video of his always makes me smile and actually makes me love him more
Cant believe I only just stumbled across you Mika you exquisite human... such a joy to suddenly find an amazing artist who you can totally fall in love with thank you for being amazing and big love to you xo.
Mika strikes a chord in 2020's culture: "Where have all the good guys gone?" There are so few admirable men left, as modern 'toxic male' and cancel culture has all but destroyed the image of male role models. Whether they are artists, astronauts, cowboys or even gay men - the void is apparent. There are precious few admirable men to look up to anymore, across all stripes of 'maleness'. David Bowie is one man I miss, as his creativity and individualism and constant reinvention stimulated much of my own.

there are some days I do not feel like listening any song but Mika's. Sometimes I get fixated on one song and I play it in loop for some time. I don't know why this artist speaks up so much to me, it is like I relate to his kindness, melancholy, want to be accepted and many other themes. Mika you are one of my favourite artists and I will always be your Fan so do not ever give up on anything! ^^ I hope you can use your position to better things even if you are only a singer.
Such a genuinely human-touch gifted, ashtonishingly talented artist. Saw him yesterday for the first time ever at the Cap Roig 2023 Festival (Calella de Palafrugell, Catalonia, Spain). I had never heard a song from him before and -after just five minutes of live performance- I couldn't believe what my eyes were seeing: a jaw-falling top-level vocal performance combined with an out-of-this-world charismatic interaction with the atrending public. Bravo bravo bravo!!! Long life to this sort of ARTISTS!!!
It's Where have all the Good Guys gone. Being gay doesn't seem to be the focus. I've loved his voice and songs for years. He's a phenomenal performer and singer!!! ❤
First time hearing this song and I´m in tears right now. Thank you Mika for being in this world, for being in this time, for making this world a little bit better with your music! I´m 52 and still looking up at the stars! From Mexico, God bless you!
Ari Hr. He is literally asking "WHERE HAVE THE GAY GUYS GONE"... the gay singers, the gay writers... they haven't done much recently. He even lists some of them in the song.
Good Guys à jamais dans nos cœurs.
my favorite song in this album! I can't stop listening to it. replay replay replay. for some reason, there is this certain feel of nostalgia in all of his songs, especially in this one.
Every single music video of MIKA's has captured me in so many ways. They are all so different and beautiful and involve so many emotions that you won't see in most music videos out there. His music is a breath of fresh air and his music videos truly add to it.
