My dad and uncle used to hang out with Chris Russo when they were kids back in Syosset. They said he’s always been this way. Same voice too. These two are nationals treasures. This show is truly missed.
After they got the new stadium everyone thought it sucks. They built themselves a soulless big corporate looking stadium with no charm. It doesn't hold the crowd noise in. The old stadium it looked like the upper decks were a lot closer so when the crowd went crazy it was intimidating and so cool. Now they play baseball in a Walmart
This was the best sports radio ever... especially during the 90s when the Knicks were last relevant and the Yankees were in the beginning stages of their most recent dynasty.
Wow do I miss this show. The greatest sports radio duo of all time. So fortunate to grow up in NYC at this time. Been listening since i was in High School. Im 46 now. Thete was no better sports radio show. All im talking about is them together. Thats all. Brings back great memories. Listening to this old clips is bittersweet
+Joaquim Cal No, he's not. Refurbished is not the same as rebuilt. The guts of the old place was still from 1923. If people would have been in the park when the steel beam fell in 1998, there would have been people killed. From that point, it was only a matter of time before they got the new park built, it was a safety issue, the original Stadium was on borrowed time, eventually it wasn't going to pass safety inspections.
I don’t understand why Steinbrenner just didn’t renovate the Old Stadium. They could’ve just torn down the old stadium, play at Citi Field for two years, and renovate the old stadium.
I couldn't agree more with Dog. The new Yankee Stadium is complete shit compared to the old one. The old Yankee Stadium was ELECTRIC, raucous, and a HUGE home field advantage. Now it's lackluster, quiet, and dead. Who gives a fuck about a scoreboard? The seats? amenities, etc. I always went to game to see THE YANKEES, nothing else. I never had a problem using teh bathroom, or getting food in that place either. Man I miss it!
+Ryan C They lead the league in attendance again this year. The empty seats thing is a myth based on what can be seen on TV. They are drawing the same as before
new Yankee stadium is horrible who the hell came up with that design why would you want to try to create the old Yankee Stadium but then put some sort of strange twist to it where it doesn't even represent the old Yankee Stadium at all????!!!!!!!! bottom line is this there is no feel to that Stadium it doesn't feel special when you walk in there there's no juice to the place there's some sections where you sit an you have a hard time seeing the action on the field? I hate the new Yankee stadium. Citi Field blows it away I'm sorry but it does Citi Field is World leagues better. the Mets did one hell of a job with there Stadium now I'm not a Mets fan but go to Citi Field and see if your self? happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there. Pleasant Journeys
Mad Dog spot on here with respect to Yankee Stadium. The new Stadium is lifeless and Mike was proven absolutely wrong that the new Stadium would have the "same feel" as the old Stadium. Plus, the consistently empty premium seating, where the average fan is priced out from ever sitting, is a horrible look on TV. The only fans that have "bigger and more comfortable seats" are millionaires and stars like Alec Baldwin.
Like Mike, I went to my first game in 1961 (as a seven year old). As great as that team was, I went to a losing game ( 2-1, vs. the White Sox) and the Yanks run came off of a Roger Maris homer. Mantle of course was out injured but I still went home happy. My dad, brother mom and I sat down the left field line , what a night.
I'm Italian American and I can tell you the best part on this argument between these 2 Italian Americans happened at 6:18. That's when Chris and Mike both raised their hands in the air and BOTH were at their most confident on each of their points. That's when they each used the golden hand gestures with REAL feeling. You could see they both put their hands in the air and they were pushing the hands forward as if pushing an energy field towards each other. I get goose bumps seeing that. NICE
I use to love watching this show just to hear them argue.. This was the most classic one ! The other one was when Mike Francesca was solo and argued with a caller named Alex for 10 minutes about Joba Chamberlain . Mike went nuts screaming at this guy
I miss sitting in the seats the old Stadium and that was it. Trying to go to the bathroom and get something to eat was a nightmare. The corridors were cramped beyond belief. You couldn't move
TL2354 shea was much worse. you had single file lanes at many points behind the seats. and the points where the crowds bottlenecked in there was downright dangerous.
I've been to the Old and New Stadium and the lines for the Bathroom were longer at the Old Stadium but what is Mike talking about just because the Stadium was refurbished in 1973-76 Mickey Mantle and DiMaggio didn't play there. It's the same spot. Just the shell was changed. The field was still the same. CF was still in the spot where Joe D and Mickey played and RF was where Babe Ruth played and 1st base where Gherig played.
These fools arguing about the bathrooms lines at ballparks!!!😅😅😅 Classic! First take brougt me here, I never heard of Mad Dog til first take. I couldn’t stand him at first, I really regret that, Mad Dog is must watch TV on Wednesdays.
they were loud but they were knowledgale from 1996 when my daughter was born.they were the reason whypeople like stephen a smith and skip bayless became famous thank you mike and chris
I'm amazed at the number of people who agreed with Dog here. Did everyone who was against the new Stadium forget about the steel beam falling in 1998? The guts of the Stadium were still from 1923, it was only a matter of time before the safety issues got to a scary level. The Stadium had structural issues brought on by time, the fact that the place "rocked" only made that worse. It was only a matter of time, they had no choice but to replace it. I'm as much for preserving historical landmarks as the next guy here, but this one was still being used and it simply didn't have much more functional time left in the state it was in. They had no choice but to do something
Alvin Glenn so much better than the contrived, preproduction meeting deciding which guy will take Lebron and which will take Jordan. An actual, heated debate both willing to die on this hill
Beginning of the end.... By this point in '08 they had not been speaking off-air for about a month, and things got worse as the spring wore on. By the time of their summer vacations, Dog had had it. The Sirius offers made it possible for him to quit early. This might have been an argument about a stadium, but there was a lot of personal shit fueling this disagreement.
Funny thing about this argument is that they were both right. I loved the old yankee stadium but the wait for bathrooms and concessions were brutal and most views were really bad. The new stadium is more comfortable but lacks the home field and energy of the old stadium.
They bring up Fenway. Yes it's old and cramped. Parking situation is bad. But there's nothing quite like it. It's history, it's special, it has a great feel it I much rather have that and a stadium with all the creature comforts.
I don't think Mike actually believed what he was saying here. I think he just played devil's advocate for the sake of discussion. That's what these radio toolbags do.
The new stadium sucks. Yeah the old one was cramped and didn't have anything modern but that is part of what made it Yankee Stadium, it had that old school feel. The new one is more of a shopping mall than it is a ballpark.
Nothing compares to the mystique of the old house. Nothing. It's asinine to make such a comment. The place lacks electricity and excitement. The public announcer blows, the play by play announcers blow, the new age fans completely blow and are dead in spirit. heck, they couldn't even keep the home run siren. instead you have this crappy siren that sounds like a train coming through. There is no sound of the game. The place is dead. Quiet. Silence. I've been to hundreds of games at the old house. I've only been to this new garbage of a ballpark once back in 09. This place draws the white collar snots. You don't see true old school Fans of yesteryear. The hardcore fans. The blue collar fan. Back then being a fan ran through your veins. You can't even chant the old chants anymore without getting escorted out. Even section 39 sucks. And I was one of the original bleacher creatures of way back when. I will never set foot in there again. we had a ballpark. Now it's a shopping mall and fancy restaurants. Rant over
I actually agree with both arguments they’re making. They both make good arguments. I agreed with what Mike said about old Yankee stadium being cramped. And it was a pain in the neck sometimes to go to the bathroom. But I just dealt with it because I loved the old stadium. “Who cares about the scoreboard!!” Is hilarious. I agree, who cares about that. Now that it’s been 11 years I can honestly say I miss the old stadium. Not the same experience.
I love at 3:09 Minko is seen walking out of the studio with papers in hand while Mike and Chris are still screaming at each other. He was supposed to the 20/20 but that wasn't gonna happen!
I'm with Mike all the way, love the modern amenities of a new ballpark including both the New Yankee Stadium and Citi Field. More comfortable, more bathrooms, better food and drink selections, smooth easy access. Parking at Citi Field is a charm. Yankee Stadium is 4 train all the way. I do agree with Dog on the "feel" of a vintage ballpark like the Old Yankee Stadium, Fenway, or Wrigley. Love a game at Fenway, like any true baseball fan would. But with that comes the bathroom issues, duller food and drink selections, ect. But going to home games on a consistent basis like people like us do in NY, having those modern amenities make the overall gameday experience much better.
Now the debate between The New Yankee Stadium and Citi Field is a whole new game. Citi Field all the way. More vibrant and fan friendly, the best food and drink selection you can possibly get, tons of bathrooms, plentiful parking. Great experience there. Not that Yankee Stadium is a bad experience, but it does lack a lot of the upgraded modern amenities that a Citi Field has. But let's be honest, it's a huge upgrade from the Old Yankee Stadium...RIP
