Mike Beckwith remembers Jim Clark and Normand Racing

Mike Beckwith was the driver/manager behind Normand Racing, the factory-backed Lotus 23 sports car team for which Jim Clark raced in 1963. A consistently-fast and successful racing driver in his own right (who in 1964 would run his F2 Brabham right up with the leading F1 stars of the day) Beckwith was nonetheless transfixed by his close-up view of Jim's talent. On the anniversary of Clark's passing (April 7, 1968) Mike remembers the short, shining life of Normand Racing and the driver he describes as "the best of all time". Wow no wonder what a story, how many people can say they raced together wheel to wheel with the legend Jim Clark and such a nice bloke as well.

Leo Würde vor 2 Tagen JIM CLARK - By far the greatest driver ever - no doubt. He is and was the Best of the Best. No other driver in history until today was so superior as Clark. This man is the Olymp of driving - the Michelangelo of racing - a dynamic art at the highest level. So smooth, so precise, so fast....simply out of this world. One, who won in Spa by 5 minutes (!) in monsoon rain...One, who takes back a complete lap (!) in Monza and back into the lead... One, who took pole on the original 22,8 km Nürburgring track by 9 (!) seconds and more....One who won Indy by 2 whole (!) laps...For eternity and by lightyears unmatched in the sport. That`s just four examples of his mesmeric unique genius...

Mike Beckwith was a wonderful driver who took many victories in the sixties when my father drove. I seem to recall that he had a number of very good battles with another brilliant guy called Keith Holland who went on to race formula 5000. Racing in those days was bloody wonderful and produced so many great drivers including Christabel Carlisle who chiefly raced Mini's and regularly beat the blokes, happy days!! I have many slides from this era, but none of Mike.

In my schoolboy, Ferrari fan eyes, Mike was a top driver in the Ferrari Dino 206S at the BOAC 500. I had been captivated by the P4s the previous year, so was rooting for Mike and Tony Dean on the 206S. So funny that it was clearly of so little significance to him that he could not remember this (now classic) car!

AntonHu Age has caught up, when introduced to the Lotus Elite that he won many races with for the channel4 programme “The Lost Lotus” they said what do think he replies can’t remember it lol. Anyway a great show and loads of stories and memories come back out the blue. I love him and still have the pleasure of him daily. Thank you Regard Warren
