Mike Campbell (Heartbreakers, Fleetwood Mac) talks guitars, tone, hats, and Back to the Future as we ask him the hard-hitting questions about his career, gear, and life itself. Read more on Reverb: goo.gl/F8ZJcj
This "most underrated ...." stuff is one of the most overrated quotes ever. Underrated by whom? Bu the Heartbreakers fans? By the Travelling Wilburys? People who play guitar - not shredders!!! - know that Mike is soooooo good. And he belongs to the "100" list of great guitarists in the rolling stone. What do you mean by "underrated"?
@@joe22589 Joe, Thank you for the comment. My statement said "in my opinion ". I'm not sure you caught that. I don't want to presuppose any group of music lovers...whether Willbury's or Heartbreakers or even Fleetwood Mac's. Hope this helps.
I wouldn't go that far it's just basic human respect which i can see that when it's used it stands out these days , Oh Well ya know it's kind of true ! Peace !
I'm with ya....right about the time I started learning guitar in 81 or 82' MTV had Tom Petty on and The Waiting was my favorite song...and I fell in love with Mike Campbell's playing and tone....those Rickenbackers!!! It's funny looking back how they were kind of an underground band. Now, one of the most popular bands of all time!!! RIP Tom
Ian Snyder Agreed. Tom’s death (feels more appropriate to use his 1st name) hit me harder than any rock and roll death. If there was a Mt. Rockmore, he’d be on it. And Goddam Mike Campbell is a bad ass!! The perfect guitarist for Tom Petty. I love all the hits, but one of my fav underrated songs is “Dogs On The Run”.Take care🤘
Mike Campbell doesn't realize it [or maybe even care?], but he and the rest of the Heartbreakers pretty much have made the "Soundtrack" to my life, and it's so So SO appreciated. I probably sing, whistle or hum a TP & the HB song every day! Peace - RT!
Not to sound contentious but the thing I really admire about Mike is he keeps growing as a player and his chops are next to none. A lot of legendary players tend to flatline at a point and just cruise there but Mike, Joe Walsh and Frampton comes to mind as well, just seem to keep an active enthusiasm and interest in playing which shows imo
Justin Garcia I believe you are right. Mike is a guitarist and excellent guy first, and a rich rock star second. He has lived his life with honor. Anyone can do that, rich or poor. His talent goes without saying.
that was literally one of the best interviews I have ever seen. GREAT questions......and Mike gave very thoughtful and engaged answers. Thanks a bunch for posting.
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH ok professor thanks for clarifying exactly how I feel. I know realize I was actually wrong and in reality I hated this interview and didn’t enjoy the answers that were given due to the horrible questions provided to the artist.
I can never possibly say enough about M.C. He's a brilliant player and a wonderful human. He has talent and integrity and I'm so glad he found this gig. He's way too valuable a player and songwriter and foil to not have been scooped up by a band as amazing as Fleetwood Mac.
Mike Campbell is a true class act which is rare nowadays. Mike has been a huge influence in my guitar playing. He's so humble and he makes learning guitar seem easy. Truly one of the few guitar players that has never wasted a note along with David Gilmour and Elliot Easton. Their playing serves their song so well. Kudos to you Mike Campbell!
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who thought that lol well they were kinda like brothers and being around someone like Tom for so many years and being that close to someone like that you start to sound and talk like them
They all were from the same 50-mile radius, in North Florida, too, so, much of it is regional speech. Ron Blair’s speaking voice is similar to Tom’s ,too.
What a down-to-Earth guitar and writing legend... anytime I hear Mike give interviews, I still hear Tom's voice within him. That is how close they were... :( Mike brings such a cool vibe to Fleetwood Mac... I hope to see them live! BTW... who are the complete idiots that would give the Living Legend Mike Campbell a "thumbs down" for sharing his musical... and humorous... insight?!??
The third person I am aware who has a Broadcaster. Steve Howe and John 5 being the other two. Mike Campbell is one of the top guitarists in the world ( OBVIOUSLY ).

I want to have a few beers with this guy. What an articulate, amazing artist just enjoying life. He’s so respectful of his hero’s and self deprecating. Great interview! Boys of Summer !? Was a bit tired of that tune, no more now that I know!
Admittedly, this type of music is not in my wheelhouse and I don’t know much about Mike Campbell but what a great human. Humble, legendary, and when I heard he wrote Boys of Summer with DH I became an instant fan. Why a brilliant song. Reverb - Mike Campbell’s got another fan!
One of the best songwriters and guitarists on earth, end of story. He is underrated and iMO Toms secret weapon. George Harrison and the rest of the Wilburys might also agree.
They'd say the same thing about each other but don't fool yourself, there would've been no Heartbreakers without Tom.. Mike and all the guys are insanely talented but Tom made it happen.
Hey Mike remember when you played with Derek Trucks at a bar in Dade City FL.? Our mutual friend Rodger h. Told me of that gig . Getting high on set break was the best sesh in my life .got to reminisce with Derek about that show at a north Georgia harvest fest . He told me that was his second paying gig .so awesome of you to play with him and show him to ropes on tour . congratulations on the Fleetwood Mac job . Thanks for all the good music and memories .i
Great questions - nice interview. Mike goes right onto his next team without having to go into limbo and grieve. He should be the perfect plug-in for Buckingham. It's like magic!
TPATH were all about the songs, no long leads, no fancy stuff, especially the 21st century music, and Mike was perfect for Tom. They got down to that pure raw sound that is what rock is all about.
Love, love, LOVE this man. And he is right on regarding his comment-and ultimate compliment-regarding John & Mick ... They started playing as a rhythm section in Fleetwood Mac the same year that Sgt. Peppers, Strange Days, Disraeli Gears, and Are You Experienced were released.
The fans paid to see and hear Fleetwood Mac and as great as Mr. Campbell is in his own right, he is doing the right thing by being faithful to the original spirit of the hits he is being paid to interpret.

thanks for this. what a cool, normal guy. i could listen to him talk music for hours. there's a video that was taken down where he's going thru gear and guitars and it is so awesome. i only watched a little bit of it, tagged it to watch later (at home while drinking a beer and guitar in lap!). i've tried to find it, i think it was a fan club only type of video cause i couldn't locate it anywhere else.
Love Mike. He is awesome. Such a humble and kind human being. Tom was certainly lucky to have him and all the Heartbreakers. One of the best bands ever.

We saw them in Denver a month or so ago, and Mike had a great influence on the overall show. Besides playing great on all the FM songs, he brought out some of the older Peter Green material. Seeing him drive Christine McVie jamming out on Black Magic Woman was so cool, just a really different flavor for FM. Oh Well, a Danny Kerwin tune, a great Neil Finn tune, and Free Falling in the encore, his stamp was all over the show. Highly recommended!

Great clip. Best rhythm and only rhythm section still alive from the old days? C’mon Mike, how about Paul & Ringo!? Haha. Of course, they don’t play together very often anymore, but still. Mike is a talented and genuine guy.
You stole my comment, friend! :) Not that I have even come close to seeing all MC interviews, but I have not ever seen him smile and laugh so much. Thank you Reverb!
