Beside a great drummer Mike's an engaging speaker. I can - and have - listened to his online talks & interviews at home and work to get me through an otherwise boring, uneventful day. His knowledge of drums, love of music/musicians and intellect make him a spirited communicator and entertaining personality.
Met Mike at the London Drum Show a few years back. He was a lovely man and a real gentleman. He even gave me a signed drum head which I treasure to this day. What an awesome drummer - absolute knock out!
Fantastic interview Ken , more of the same please . These interviews you do with musicians showing and talking about their fave albums/ influences are great .
Hey Mr. Micallef! Thanks for the really insightful videos like this. Very much appreciated. I'm from Canada and have been a jazz nut since I was 12. Keep up the good work, and my salutations from Gatineau,Québec Canada !
I could listen to this for hours. I wish i could read lips to hear exactly what miles said to mike and paul! I guess it was a compliment in miles own way. Great stories from a great drummer who is respected by herbie and so many musicians! Thanks ken and mike i really enjoyed this.
@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 Yes. You remember the 60's Folk-Rock group, The Byrds don't you ? Their original drummer from 1964-68 was named Michael Clarke.
Feeling a little better now, So time for some more Jazz. Before I go on I hope this is a Coronavirus free zone! Right, let's dive in with Mike Clark. Mr Monk clearly is a genius on the piano, unless your someone with a lot of money in your bank account and has the time to find and collect all of his albums, dipping into Monks albums can be problematic. Part of the problem with Thelonious Monks music was that often he would need poking with a stick by some record label boss “Come on Monk time to make a new album”. If he was inspired to make music you would get genius music from him.(For me sometimes his music is played in a way to serious fashion, it was the other musicians around him who made the music he played a fun listen. Solo Monk is less interesting to me) If he was not inspired to make an album you might get 1 or 2 new tunes from him if your lucky then he would just rerecord some of his old tunes. Some of his rerecordings are better than the first time he played them others are not better. His fans online debate which are the best versions of his tunes still to this day. Is that a (Jazz) cat in the background? Yes, Miles is an icon of music to us all not just the Jazz guys. Good Miles stories thank you for telling them, Mike. (Mike is a good storyteller.) Art Blakey was influenced as much by a lot of the rock drummers of the time. He was friends with Cream's Ginger Baker, I forget how those 2 met. Ginger was taking Jazz influence from Art Blakey, you can here a lot of Jazz in the way Ginger plays his kit. *Ginger Baker and Art Blakey* ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y32V6klRurY.html *Jazz Drummers Timeline* ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0LJltD0v41w.html
What's with silencing out the swear words? That's stupid. What is this, daytime US television or does RU-vid have some stupid double-standard where they let comedians say whatever they want and stuff like this has to be bleeped out? Good lord.
