He uses 3 pick-ups. The sound hole pick-up, a bridge pick-up and a microphone inside the guitar. The microphone is for the percussive elements when the hits his guitar. The funny patch on the guitar top is a scratch-pad. On some songs he "scratches" it with his fingernails. Very interesting sound.

I’m pretty sure that piece near the cut away is for using fingernails to make a scratching sound. I’ve never used one but it adds a cool texture though.

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee 10k! wtg!!! One is the song that convinced me as a teenager that at least some metal maybe wasn't BS (grew up listening to nothing but The Beatles, studying classical piano and then listening to medieval music and Celtic music which eventually got me interested in modern folk music). I was very opinionated and thought I knew an awful lot about music. I eventually learned that I had a whole lot to learn (and might as well just assume I don't know much, since there's a whole frickin' universe of it out there). Today, I learned about scalloped fretboard guitars. So: ty! This performance was mind-blowing. It would have been mind-blowing without the video, but *with* the video, seeing all of the ways he manipulated the guitar to produce this renditon of the song (even with extra tracks or whatever was involved)... whew.
