He seems to be underrated. People hear Green Day's songs and on first listen a lot of their songs seem extremely simple, which is mostly because of the guitar's power chords, but when you listen closely to the bass lines on Dookie, you'll realize there's tons and tons of details in them.

This dude was a huge inspiration and influence on 16-year old, newly minted bassist me in 1991. I heard Kerplunk and bass made SENSE. You can contribute to the melody, you can push the others, you can fill any hole. As far as I'm concerned he's one of the great bassists of the era.

All the basslines he played, all basslines i learned to play bass to circa 1996. I still find Dirtnisms in my playing sometimes. Influenced me a lot even though i don't play punk anymore and havent really in probably 20 years.

Always loved Mike's playing and he was one of my favorite bass players as a kid and in dookie era. He has a very unique sound and i like that his not playing what guitar plays and that makes him really stand out. Truly inspirational player. Now i play guitar and bass but i have a special love for the bass. "Bass is the balls of a band" as we say in Finland.

I think the "No one knows" bass line is WAY better than the "Longview" bass line. I was expecting him to play it when he started talking about Kerplunk...

Hey Mike,I doubt you will see this, but, I'm Derek Selixs little Bro...remember,from High school,Rodeo,Ca...John Swett, and Veiwpoint...we lived on Veiwpoint Blvd..we used to go watch you guys practice in BJs moms garage...my brother went to school with you,and I think you guys may have gone too to Pinole Valley High..i remember you played a show there and one of my friends has it on VHS somewhere. We used,well my generation that wss 5 yrs younger than you guys,take your demos,and like 1039 hrs to the school dances and asked the DJ to play you guys back between 1990 and i think 1992...i ended up damn near living at 924 Gilman st later,you guys helped push me just by seeing you live as a kid to start playing. I have been a musician like 28 yrs now, and started on a Fender Musicmaster,1978...my aunts bass..she was in a punk band in the 80's in Tara Hills,Pinole area, called Tractorface..she had a green liberty spike mohawk and drove a Pinto that was Zebra striped,lol..ahh..the good old days..anyways, been out to Christie Road lately?? Lol and isnt Tight Wad Hill the little overlooking spot over the end of the John Swett football field,track running area?? Towards Toots side of Crockett?? Anyways, I'm recording a record,been in over 20 bands, just toured with the last pretty big East Coast(I moved 9 yrs ago from Rodeo,Ca) punk band, and I'm disabled right now awaiting surgery,so $$ is tight with 3 kids here and one in CA..so I've been trying to find a Fender Musicmaster like my aunt had that I learned on but can never afford it..I even highly dig the Vintage Modified black on black deluxe jazz Squiers...I wish I could afford a whole Fender setup..i ended up being a guitarist primarily,but may be a better bass player still,lol..my first guitar ALSO was a fender,well a Korean Squier,rare model..prob best guitar i ever owned as far as durability..that thing got HAMMERED OVER AND OVER and dropped on concrete numerous times, half the headstock was broke off,the bottom half RIGHT under the 1st string tuner all the way across to near the nut and STILL held tune and just kept trucking with all hits and massive damage. I hope all is well,was amazing seeing you guys blow up..I wish there was some way to get this to you..Derek and I used to be the kids that raced Moto X for Kawasaki as kids and was always riding out in the old projects area and Airplane Fields..now you KNOW I'm from Rodeo if I know about the "Airplane Fields" next to 80,Nd Hillcrest..its too bad they tore down Hillcrest.😔 I wish u the best..(one of my projects is called Tractorface in honor of my aunt and that being the other push to get me playing besides you guys. Also have a project that I have some big names in metal guest appearing on when the EP drops,that ones called Bronson burner and i have a ton of demos up on Reverbnation,And a couple on RU-vid. It's funny how my top two favorite Bass players of all time "Mike Dirnt" always pushes Fender, and my other favorite Bass player "Mike Herrera" always pushes Ernie Ball. So it's a forever conflict for me lol!

One of the main reasons I have always been drawn to Green Day besides the music is how humble and cool of a guy Mike is. Hes just a really likable guy and he really cares about his fans. But if I were to see him at guitar center I feel like I can approach and we could talk about anything.

This dude was my idol growing up. I wanted to be like him and play like him. I'm 24 now and I still think he is cool.
