That twist-in-the-tale ending is the same one used in the movie Brazil. I used to talk to a Vietnam vet online years ago, and part of his PTSD ran along those lines too. Long story short, he'd had one of those moments in 'Nam where he was 100% certain he was going to die and only didn't by sheer, stupid, unbelievable luck. He went home from 'Nam in one piece and had a very nice life, career and retirement, but at some point he read a sci-fi story that used this same escape-the-execution-but-not-really twist, and it began to prey on his mind. He said sometimes he wakes up in the night, or gets a particular kind of drunk, and he becomes absolutely convinced that this is happening to him: that all his nice life after coming home is just a comforting illusion, and the reality is that he's still going down in a paddy field in Vietnam in 1969 in slow motion. He said the illusion was hard to break sometimes, and getting harder as he got older...
His early stuff was literally recorded on 4 track cassette in his kitchen and released on 'flexi disk' - he accidentally got a number one record in the UK because a track called 'you're gorgeous' got loads of radio play in the mid/late 90's - the song was so catchy that people were mostly unaware of the lyrical subject matter. Depp plays guitar with the Hollywood Vampires, and he actually directed this music video. Great Reaction. Have you guys ever seen The Last of the Mohicans? Depp directed the video as a thank you to Babybird for playing on a couple of tracks. Babybird are one of the most underrated bands ever and Stephen Jones is a master of dark love songs.

his crime - he got married. I love Babybird (Stephen Jones). He's a master of subversive pop and bitter sweet love songs - you'd be amazed how many of his songs/melodies are ripped off by TV advertisements (worldwide).
