@02:48 Interview with Mike McCready about Mad Season and personal insights. Video starts with the end of "I Don't Know Anything" reharal at Moore Theatre, Seattle, WA, USA April 22, 1995. creativecommons...
hermitchick because he is apart of that poser rock band Pearl Jam. Seriously though, I appreciate this album. They got the best of three grunge bands and made a super band 😎
One of the most underrated albums of all time! From beginning to end one of the rare albums where you don't skip over a song to get to the next! RIP LAYNE THOMAS STALEY!!
@@jeff7764 Of course it is - it's absolutely ludicrous to say it's not. Just because maybe you and your friends or some people you know may have heard this album or even like it, does *not* mean that it is well known or widely liked. Almost everyone I've come to meet has never even heard of Mad Season.
How was it underrated??? It was a highly acclaimed album and a big hit at the time, going gold, making the billboard album and single charts (#20 “River of Deceit”). Every concert they ever played was sold out.
So glad that this talented man survived. He's been in three super groups; Temple of the Dog, Pearl Jam, and Mad Season. Idk, but I think guitar solos are usually boring unless your name is Mike McCready. Speaking of Mad Season's unreleased tracks, hope Mike will release them as they are. Only instruments without any vocals on em. RIP Layne.
That was so sweet to see how when the interview finished mike just had a real conversation with the guy and was real and humble and interested in him. Such a sweet guy and a guitar legend. Above is up there with my all time favourite albums.
The whole interview is real feeling. But that end part gets me the deepest. Because that connection is what keeps us from chasing the dragons, and we so often forget to do it.
I would have done ANYTHING for Mad Season to put out just one more disc before going back to there respective monsters. So rare that a -super group- could write such an EPIC record that quick.
I was absolutely obsessed with this interview 2 years ago, but then it disappeared from the internet. I searched everywhere for it and couldn't find it. I was so sad and frustrated. Today I just said I must try my luck and search for it again, and here it is! Thank you so much for uploading it. You don't have the slightest idea how much this interview means to me. Thank you again, man!
THIS ALBUM. 😐 I don't even know where to start. Studio version, live version, they're BOTH just absolutely spectacular. Raw, gritty, heartbreaking, unique. I've come across VERY few perfect albums in my many decades, but this definitely falls into that category. On IDKA, I love Barrett's ever "loudening" drum intro, and Layne's voice throughout, of course, is so perfectly cast for this compilation, all the way through to the achingly poignant final note of "We're All Alone." 💔 Its hard to believe this album is now nearly *30* years old. WOW. But great music transcends time, no matter the era. Just ask Bach or Beethoven. 😉
Totally sucks that Layne couldn't get clean.. He had so much talent and was one of the best singers period !! I would have not only loved more Alice in Chains records with Layne but would have loved another Mad Season record as well, He and Mike wrote some great songs! .... It really just wasn't enough music...
Mike McCready is like the kid that never grew up. You can tell just how much he enjoys doing what he does. He's like a kid all over on stage. He's a gem
@@BeSpinafied Yeah, I was thinking Layne and Cornell, but Vedder of course is quite good as well; especially his unplugged performance of Black was outstanding.
That album not only showed more of Layne's amazing vocals and songwriting but McCready's guitar work and songwriting on the album is brilliant...Layne played guitar on a few...he was actually a good guitarist but of course nothing like a mccready or cantrell but layne's vocals, phrasing, harmonizing, songwriting and lyrics were his trademark....Dude could lay down 4 vocal tracks all accenting a diff. note for harmony or just unison/doubling a part for natural chorus...ex.'s "Again', "Died", "Get Born Again" wow. McCready had a nice impact and influence on my guitar playing in my early to mid teens (29 now been playing 18yrs)...McCready, Frusciante, Hendrix, Gilmour, Clapton, Schenker, Page, Leslie West and Cantrell...those are the guys I hold dear to my heart because they helped me form and develop into my own style and now I love songwriting just as much. The drummer Barrett Martin I think is his name laid some of the most dynamic, powerful and tightest drums down on that album I have ever heard. God bless yall and may tomorrow come to you in peace.
J.T. Bomar Btw "Again', "Died", "Get Born Again" and almost all of AIC has Jerry doing the harmonies so its not all Layne. In fact "Died" and "Get Born Again" were so difficult to record because at that time Layne and Jerry had a falling out. Jerry would come in, lay his vocal tracks in the morning then Layne would come in later in the day to do his. Those two songs were the only AIC songs the producers had to use pro tools for. A lot of people mistake Jerry's voice for Layne. Most people dont even know Jerry sings the verses to Would. Also, Cantrell was the main songwriter for AIC, which is why Mad Season sounds nothing like Alice and Jerry's solo albums do. Layne was primarily a lyricist. The only AIC song he composed was Angry Chair.
They had material written for a second album, before the bassist died. Then Staley died. They were still going to rename the band Disinformation have Mark Lanegan sing it, but it never happened. I wish it had, it still would have been the next best thing.
One of the things that I love about Mad Season is how the band started. Mcready after a longe time of drinking and drugs he met Baker, call Layne, Barret, Lanegan and Skerik. Above record is so great that us (fans) can imagine how would be a 2nd record. It's a nice exercise as a fan, but you know, it would be great :)
Exactly he’s not even verified on instagram? No big deal but I was shocked. He’s super down to earth and is pretty active on there. Long love mad season what a gift
Awesome interview beautiful Mike McCready!! I absolutely love Mad Season, I think Mike going to rehab and getting clean opened his creative mind for sure then from there no stopping Mike McCready!! RIP Beautiful Layne Staley and RIP John Baker Saunders and now RIP Mark Lanegan 😇. Thank you so very much for sharing this awesome video, 💓🤘✌️
I love that he said he wouldn't have made the album if he wasn't sober. The album is amazing, but the band was genius live. I can't believe he was surprised the album did so well at the time. It still resonates as music gold.
don't fuck with me man! I would love for that to be the case, and it could happen, but I doubt it ever will. Lanegan would be a great singer for it though.
Hate to bring up pointless shit like this but I often wonder if Layne's friends addressed his addiction or did they turn a blind eye to it? He looks like shit here did Mike and the guy's say anything to Layne, like "Layne come on, get a grip on this, get on Methadone, anything, except the way your handling things" I also understand that you can't will an addict to sobriety, the addict themselves has to want sobriety yada yada yada. IDK It's just so fucked up even after all these years.
yes man everybody tried ... hell mccready and baker had just got out of rehab when they formed Mad Season. God rest Layne's soul he is still imo the most unique vocalist ever.... Everybody tried but heroin is the devil for real...Heroin/Opiate addiction kills the soul and reduces strong human beings to shells of their former selves. For the majority they never get clean....only a small fraction come through the otherside of the tunnel and let's just say I know someone who did :) Layne was on methadone treatment during the mtv unplugged...he tried really fucking hard...his lover passed away and after she died he simply gave up..
Darrin Connor they even went so far as to fly in an addiction counselor that Layne liked, but to no avail. This BEGAN as a labor of love to also help Layne. It appears like members of Mad Season tried harder than most. I've never heard of his bio dad or demri ever trying...of course then they'd lose their meal ticket (or "whatever") I suppose.
Darrin Connor Do you know anyone that is addicted to drugs? it isn't just a case of saying: "hey man you should stop doing this shit" It is very complicated ;/
Darrin Connor From Mike's point of view that was part of the reason for doing it. He had only just come off heroin himself and wanted to encourage Layne to do likewise but he clearly failed as did many other people. He has stated this in interviews himself. It was not for lack of trying. The other problem was Layne was always the consummate professional, creatively brilliant in the studio and a very fast worker so questions about his performance never came into it, not from Mike or Jerry. He just blew them away. That comes from everyone in interviews who had ever worked with him. He was a dream to work with
Mad Season are getting back together (except Layne and baker of course), Mike McCready said so... And Lanegan is widely tipped to sing on the new album
Actually, no, it's a disc release of the unfinished material McCready, Martin, and Baker recorded without vocals. They're looking for singers to lay vocals over the tracks and then release them. Mark Lanegan is rumored to sing on it. But Mad Season certainly is not putting out a "new" album or reforming or anything.
@@lottofever3061 I think so, he said he and Layne were feeling insecure in their respective bands, so Mad Season was a way for them to do their own thing. I just feel uneasy how EV got to be the leader of PJ, the band already existed before him being a part of it...also Mccready solos were steadily disappearing from PJ albums... He and Stone are the reason why I listen to some PJ... I just think Mike would be great in a band like Mad Season... it's his style... I wish Layne and Baker were still around 😢
You guys are nuts. Vedder is about as humble as it gets for a frontman of a popular band. It's the #1 reason why Pearl Jam have never broken up.....because the lead singer isn't a prima donna like many bands.
@@vacummeWELL SAID, THANK YOU. EDDIE VEDDER IS GREAT HUMBLE MAN. 😊🩷🤘✌️SO MANY EDDIE VEDDER HATERS OUT THERE. WHAT BAND IS STILL TOGETHER AND KICKING ASS???? PEARL JAM!!! THANK YOU 💙
Hey! thank you very much for posting this! I had saw it years ago in two parts I think and I couldn't find it any further. I've been watching your videos and they are awesome.
A BIG FAT JOINT IS WHAT MADE THEM CLICK....PEARL JAM TEN WAS MADE REALLY QUICK...THE FREEDON OF JUST PLAYING WITH NOTHING TO LOSE AND ENJOYING IT CREATES THE TRUE SOUND.
November Hotel at the Moore, that's what I think of when I hear Mike. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that alcohol was not the main reason for rehab, but the same thing that America recently made a "national emergency"...
I would never know what they intended when making the album, but I wish they took more time into it. All members of the band has their own amazing skills yet the album is kinda weak. It has a few great songs but the rest is boring for me. Artificial red for example it's just a repetition of one~two riffs, it sounds totally empty. Xray mind sounds good and intriguing, but it loses its power loop after loop. Mikes riffing doesn't have a loud voice and self-replicate(maybe it was intended), TotD songs had more power. If they wanted to sound more mellow and less intense, they do. Would be better if they had more stuff to fill in the songs btw. Maybe it wasn't really a serious project...
I'm sorry the album came off as weak to you. For real, taste and perception is a funny thing, we dont all agree and that's just fine. Mad Season is high in my roster. But I get it, certain albums never sunk in for me and I'm light heartedly jealous of those who love them. Metallica BLACK album. Mastodon CRAck the Skye. Highly praised and reviewed albums that did nothing for me. Peace!
There's a good interview Baker did with the folks at EMP around the same time. I'll see if there's any copyright issue and post it if not. Baker was so grateful to Mike for bringing him out west to play. I'm convinced that Baker's addiction stemmed in large part from his childhood sexual abuse at the age of 5.
No, it is happening Mike McCready said so himself, in fact just 2 days ago Barret Martin and Mike McCready were back on stage together playing River of Deceit with some other band... A new album is happening, they just have to sort out a new singer and bass player.
