Mike Oldfield and his dogs talks with Derek Hobson about his house and home recording studio at Througham Slad, in which he invested £60,000 to adapt it to his musical need.
This interview takes place in 1978, just before the release of his 2-LP album Incantations. They discuss about why Mike is selling the house (USAF super tankers would fly overhead to their base at Fairford at 3,000ft, generating too much noise).

@@Ian-gw2vx he was angry with Branson with Amorak. Maybe that helped. He didnt want any section to be long enough to be playable on the radio. Thats why its so disjointed and full of jump scares. Thers also some hidden message telling Branson to fuck off. I think its his best guitar work.

When I watch a video like this, I can hardly think of a more perfect time and place. To have been Mike at that time seems like my ideal life. I feel lost much of the time in my own life. I yearn for a life much more like Mike’s then. It’s more than a thought or feeling, it feels spiritual. To live in a beautiful place making beautiful music. What could be better? Anyone else feel the same?

The old fallacy of "grass is greener in the other side". I do not envy Mike's life, specially at the beginning of his career, and the fact that his mom passed away very close to this time. As he, and others that worked with him have stated, his beautiful music, and also need for reclusion in old english farm houses, and poorly habitated islands in the pacific, all come from his inner struggle, misery, and social inadequacy, specially up until the 80's, but then came the bad vices. And that is why his music is like medicine, it serves to heal him first, and that's why its also intemporal music. His last album, Return to Ommadawn, brings my ears and soul as much joy as the first albums. In 300 years, people can still listen to a full Mike Oldfield album (or more), and it will still resonate on a very high and seldom achievable level.

Oh, he is definitely a genius, sure enough. My dear Mum enjoyed his music - especially Moonlight Shadow, sung by Maggie Reilly, that was her favourite Mike Oldfield tune. To my dear Mum, his music was always full of youth. And I was really fascinated with this stuff from ATV Today, I did not even know it existed, until now! And yes, I am definitely captivated by the majority of his music, it is so absorbing and fantastic. Well done, Mike Oldfield, wherever you are!

Derek Hobson interviewing Mike Oldfield at his soundproof home in the Cotswolds that inspired his second Virgin album Hergest Ridge, remembering that his Tubular Bells was the label's first release five years earlier. This was a year preceding the interview on Blue Peter that led to Virgin releasing his version of the show's theme tune Barnacle Bill The Sailor...but with important permission from the Beeb though.

He should have listened to the interviewer and stayed there, and though ideally he should have also avoided exegesis whilst being there. The world might have many more albums of Incantations quality, which I view as his greatest work of all, though in fairness Mike had great difficulty with life at that time. Tom Newman also believes that exegesis had a terrible effect on Oldfield musically.

I think exergensis happened before Incantations? After the course he changed bits that he had started on, or began anew, the result being Incantations. So without exegesis we wouldn't have the version of Incantations that we have.
@IfUfindthisURlost
@IfUfindthisURlost 5 дней назад
@@c.c.6930 Exegesis was a course that Mike went on, in order to deal with his childhood trauma and introversion. It was a bit of a kind of primal therapy, where you release any pent-up feelings and demons by screaming. After the course he seemed to become more out-going and the music is considered to have mellowed.

Kemble is no longer an active airbase and RAF Fairford isn't that far away, which hosts NATO exercises from the base a few times in the year... By coincidence I found this about a week ago on the MACE website, didn't realise anyone else was sufficiently obsessive to have found it as well! Does anyone know if the US planes ever arrived at Fairford.
