My mate now passed introduced me to the album Tubular Bells, he was only 32 (suicide), think of him lots but especially this, Stone Roses and Pink Floyds Wish You Were Here, its been 16 years. RIP buddy, gone but never forgotten. X
Well thanks 🙂🙃 I was going to see Maggie with Rock Meets Classic in April but I guess that won't be happening... Hopefully it will be postponed and not cancelled though.
I sat in the kitchen in the 80's as a kid, my headphones on, waiting for that guitar solo. It sent shivers down my spine and still does. Amazing 👏! What a song, just perfect.
I was just thinking while watching the previous video of this song how much I always liked it and that first solo, the one without distortion. So much to like about this song and I never really knew who it was until stumbling across Maggie's channel just now with a 2023 live version.
similar story (born 1970) in the early 80s i remember with the family being in some department store and i heard this title only faint out of the background easy listening "PA system" of the shopping center, and it caught me, i tried to filter out any other sound - for years did not know who it was but always greatly enjoyed the song and still do. Yet up to date i do not know what the lyrics actually mean (English is not my native language but there are so many other songs i fully understand, only here the lyrics give riddles) but never mind it's a beautiful title.
This defines the 80s.. The vibe, the attitude, the fashion, the beauty, it's all definitely 80s, and listening to this is like transporting my mind back four decades. Life was so perfect, surrounded by magic and love, friends and family. Most are gone now, but this music plugs me into their souls in memories, reliving them, like we are all back together for a glorious few minutes ❤️
Maggie played with Cado Bell in the early 70s and they were brilliant; they played the Glasgow scene, especially the places of further education. He voice is phenominal; a huge range and as pure as water.
Migel, sloth emperor Spoiler: He didn't. That's why he's on "the other side" and she sees him "in heaven". That's the point of the song. He has died obv ;)
I was 1 year old, my father took the headset upon me. I was carried away by Mikey’s masterpieces , I mean not kidding. Playing the piano with his pieces and I’m almost thirty.🎉
Mike Oldfield is a musical genius and Maggie's vocals are phenomenal. This song brings me back to the times when I was very young and everything was easier or so it seemed.
@@projetor.m.2353 yeah, it has the 90s vibes all over it. I think OP mistook the 9 for 8 in his / her 1983 comment, but I'm too lazy to check. But it definitely sounds and looks like the 90s :)
@@blabla-rg7ky check the facts. It was released as a single in 1983. Excellent music and great performances stand the test of time, unlike the recycled, automated, pitch tuned shit we get nowadays!
The way she sings “shadow”. No slurring, no half hearted words. A beautiful, soothing voice with proper pronunciation! And yes, a massively talented songwriter and musician in Mike Oldfield. 👍🥲
@@ajs41I've found that most Scots speak better & clearer English than the English themselves & that goes for the Welsh too , listen to Richard Burton .
Words don't do justice for how good this song is. So unique, the haunting feel to it sounds like nothing else. Perfect vocals from Maggie Reilly and lyrics that Bernie Taupin would be proud of. 100% a timeless classic that you never forget
My late father loved this song.I played it a few days before he died, and although he was really ill was able to move his head in time with the music!Played it at his funeral, miss you Dad!!!!
I just woke up today with lyrics of chorus and Maggie’s voice, luckily after typing the first line of lyrics this song appeared on my search list. Love it! Cheers to all listening in 2023 and beyond!
Music CAN be and IS categorised. In musicology. And music can be broken down into its constituent elements and analysed. "Pure music is music" is meaningless. But I can see what you're trying to say.
@@kinorspielmann4649 As another musicologist i can confirm your statement. Its definitly popular music. It has sing songwritters arrangements, but it is more complex in way of harmony and melody. so i would say, it is pop song with huge influnece of prog rock music. Prog pop maybe? :D
@@kinorspielmann4649 Sigh, the art of deconstruction leads to destruction. Not that the process is devoid of value, but it has little to do with the art.
Mike Oldfield is very talented with the number of different instruments he can play, as well as great composing. My first introduction to him was when he recorded the updated theme music for Blue Peter. I was amazed that he played all the different parts himself, then the recordings were mixed together - very unusual in those days.
@@carolynwoodman1734 I don't think Hank Marvin played on this, great guitarist though he is. I believe Mike Oldfield plays all the main instrumentals on his recordings, although the second guitarist in the video was apprently being mimed by one of his touring musicians.
@@snowgirl9094 The shadows recorded an instrumental version of this song and Hank Marvin performed an equally impressive and melodic solo. Recommend them.
I am Korean, 21 years old. I heard this song when I was young. My father loved this song. I didn't know the song's name until yesterday. But, today by tiktok I found this song's name. I'm so happy now. :)
I'm Hungarian, 24, and it's almost the same here. 😇 I loved this when I was a child but never knew the title and I forgot about it in the years. Then today I heard it on the radio and I heard the 'Moonlight shadow' in the refrain and I thought it must be the title, so I searched for it. 😌
+Edward Pennacchini One of those very few voices we are so lucky to have in our memories...Like Maddy Prior and Judie Tzuke, just a few every lifetime...
We are like butterfly collectors, the memories from times long gone are the butterflies and the music from those times are like pins that hold them in position.
Simon Phillips plays on the whole Crises album. Love his drumming on Foreign Affair in particular. Ironically the guy in the video isn't Simon, it's Mike's touring drummer Pierre Moerlen.
it doesn't matter in which mood i am (happy, angry, sad...), this song gets me everytime and for 3:42 minutes problems of the world are out of my mind, greetings to everybody who work at this masterpiece
I am now 78 years of age and I am playing this for all the peoples of the world who sent me such wonderful comments ,thank you all have a nice day every day we wake up we are winners❤️❤️
I HEAR THIS SONG EVERY DAY ON THE RADIO. GREAT TO KNOW WHAT IT’S ACTUALLY CALLED! THIS IS A LEGENDARY SONG. FINALLY GET TO SHARE THIS GREAT SONG WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY ❤
+Aygun Samadova This is one of my favourite songs from my whole life. I first heard it as a kid in the early 80s. It's nice that even today, people newly appreciate it.
This melody is one of the few masterpieces of pop music, and as such it will live forever. I was 18 when I heard this song at a Christmas party, a true masterpiece. Now, 40 years later, listening to it again gives me the same intense emotions, it's as if time goes back, giving the same colors and scents. Lovely melody.
This was one of those songs that were stuck in my head from early childhood that I couldn't really remember. Today I was lucky enough to hear it on the radio and I quickly noted some of the lyrics and was able to find it on google. So glad to have found this song!
I was teenager in the 80s. A very great time. Mike Oldfield is one of the best. The voice: Maggi Reilly is only can sing this song. Absolutly: Masterpiece.
This song is so special to me, this song and 'To France'. Maggie's voice is incredible, and so distinctive. I was only a child when this was released, but I am so thankful that I grew up through an era when music like this was released. I love how Mike uses historic references and tones in his music, he's an absolute genius.
Agree, beautiful recording and video. There's so much great musicianship here, Maggie's voice is perfect for this romantic ballad, and the visuals are a perfecr match (wow, that silky white dress!). The whole feels completely unforced, as soon as you hear it the song feels completely natural like a folk-song, even though it's actually not an easy one to play. I agree this kind of quality pop/rock music is sadly absent from the charts and radio waves these days.
[Verse 1] The last that ever she saw him Carried away by a moonlight shadow He passed on, worried and warning Carried away by a moonlight shadow Lost in a riddle that Saturday night Far away on the other side He was caught in the middle of a desperate fight And she couldn't find how to push through [Verse 2] The trees that whisper in the evening Carried away by a moonlight shadow Sing a song of sorrow and grieving Carried away by a moonlight shadow All she saw was a silhouette of a gun Far away on the other side He was shot six times by a man on the run And she couldn't find how to push through [Chorus] I stay, I pray See you in Heaven, far away I stay, I pray See you in Heaven one day [Verse 3] Four A.M. in the morning Carried away by a moonlight shadow I watched your vision forming Carried away by a moonlight shadow Stars move slowly in the silvery night Far away on the other side Will you come to talk to me this night? But she couldn't find how to push through [Chorus] I stay, I pray See you in Heaven, far away I stay, I pray See you in Heaven one day [Guitar Solo] [Outro] Far away on the other side Caught in the middle of a hundred and five The night was heavy and the air was alive But she couldn't find how to push through Carried away by a moonlight shadow Carried away by a moonlight shadow Far away on the other side But she couldn't find how to push through
This is absolutely thrilling. An Emily Bronte atmosphere, Maggie's sublime voice, and then those contrasting guitar solos near the end. Epiphanic excellence. ❤❤❤
There's something truly magical about old music like this......sadly,as a thirteen year old I was never alive to enjoy those times, but when I hear my friends talking about one direction and flicking miley Cyrus I think, wow am I lucky to know about this music!
you realise that 30 years ago people thought this particular track of Mike Oldfield was way to commercial and to heavily marketed. now I'm not comparing Oldfield to one direction or anything but truth be said, there's some really good music out there besides what you hear on the radio. your being 13, so not yet alive when this music was made is a strange statement, I wasn't alive when Carl Orff wrote carmina burana for instance but I'm glad I live in this day and age when music is just a mouseclick away, think about that :)
its probable that music companies purposefully flood the market with shit to increase the value of their back catalogues so they can increase the value of company property and therefore the company coverage of the mundane lives of celebrities are sold for more than music, music id mostly a gateway for the famouse for fame to promote them to sell shit controversy = free advertising piss off a bunch of prudes and the song will be on the news its an ass, its a tit GET OVER IT go to a porn site or get a hooker and just get it over with you're making them stronger try the newgrounds audio portal or bandcamp or soundcloud or some shit non-commercial songs have to compete on their content instead of their hype the low quality oldies are forgotten because nobody bothers to look for them unless there was something noteworthy about them. over 9000 comments all reading "i hate my generation" "OLD-SHIT records inc" stock up 17% "be sure to ship the "Justin's Greatest sHITS" before we sell our back catalogue of musicians that lay cold in the dust and we dont have to pay we will get more money because of the sales increase from disenfranchised teens who think there UNIQUE for listening to oldies every song EVER has an i hate my generation comment youre not so fucking special youre just surrounded by morons MUSICAL Dunning-Kruger effect
This song will forever remind me of Majorca 83..my wife and I got married that year and all the bars in Porto pollenca were playing it...here we are almost 40yrs on,2 kids,6 grandchildren and still in love.🎸🎶☀️👍💕
I was a kid, when I first heard this song in the radio... I got goosebumps and immediatelly fell in love with her voice... I'm 46 now, an still get goosebumps all over my body, when I listen to this song... This sweet voice, this guitar...
Me too! Same model year. ;) I also got the same reaction listening till "Annies Song" by John Denver. Even though I couldn´t understand the lyrics as a kid. Both songs have something longing dreamy melancholic yet...light.
I can't stop listening to her angelic voice. God bless her and her family. Proud to be a fellow Welsh lady. Classy lady so elegant and stunningly talented. .
