A short tribute to two legendary British keyboard players who have died recently. Mike Pinder pioneered the use of the Mellotron with The Moody Blues, and Richard Tandy served as keys maestro for many years in ELO, playing a major part in many huge-selling records. Rest in peace guys, and thanks...

Richard Tandy one of the best keyboardists ever. He was a huge part of ELO’s DNA. A very humble and kind man.❤❤❤

I met Richard Tandy and his wife the day after a Jeff Lynne's ELO show in 2016 in Waitrose in Kensington, London. Both of them couldn't have been more sweet or lovely!

Amazing James. My mum once saw Jools Holland in Harrods in London, but she didn't talk to him.

Nice tribute James. Mike Pinder wrote two of my favourite Moodies songs, Have You Heard and Simple Game ( that was also covered by the Four Tops). On the back cover of Face The Music is that image of the band pressed up against glass as if they are witnessing an execution..Richard Tandy is the only one looking away because he thought the cover concept was distasteful..certainly no doubting his great talent. RIP both.

Hi Rob. Ah yes, I remember that story about Richard on the back cover of FTM. I think it's in Bev Bevan's book.

'Lost in a Lost World' was the song that drew me back, totally, into the Moodies, so relevant. Jeff was so fortunate to have Richard's 'palette of talent'.

Thanks James, a fitting tribute to both Mike and Richard indeed. I particularly like the use of word "rambunctious", not to mention "twiddling with his knobs" which is something I do in my more enlightened moments!

I never would have connected that Eldorado finished off the Moody's "Voyage", and then the Moody's came back as an "ELO". Brilliant!

Mike Pinder definitely was the zenith of mellotron players. The Best Way To Travel might be my favorite Moody's song. Richard Tandy is definitely a major part of ELOs sound. Never got to see any incarnation of either band, despite being a big fan.
@jamesgriffithsmusic
@jamesgriffithsmusic 15 дней назад
I always regretted not seeing ELO back in the day so it was great to catch the Jeff Lynne incarnation. That said, it badly missed Bev Bevan's heavier drum style. The guy he has now is a pop drummer basically (works for Take That!).

Lovely tribute James. I too got to see Richard Tandy play a few years ago with Jeff Lynne's ELO.. I'm not lying when I say it was a childhood dream come true. I've also got a signed copy of the BC Collection album he did with Dave Morgan and Martin Smith.. which I'm sure you've heard, if not it's well worth checking out. Such a sad loss.

Talking about Birmingham: the Moody Blues and ELO were from there, but you also had two little bands called like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest coming from there as well! 4 bands this legendary from the same city, that's remarkable.

Yes that was Richard playing on Blackberry Way. Richard was also part of the touring band for the Move. There are videos of them playing in a studio in Germany with Richard on Bass. And there was the guitar part on Strange Magic. Jeff asked Richard to play it, apparently keyboard players have more articulate fingers.

Hi Steve....the Moodies are in some ways a strange band as they had so many writers. ELO on the other hand were always dominated by Jeff's talents as a writer. Hope you are settling in to your new home. I am very behind with watching and commenting at the moment for various reasons.
