Just realized when explaining the keys of the songs on Octavarium, I mistakingly said TALW was in E...obviously I meant the key of G...sometimes I’m speaking so fast in these videos my brain doesn’t have time to process what I mean to say! 😂

Mike, you never have to apologise for talking about DT. We are privileged to be invited into your home and to hear your thoughts. I could listen to you for hours and I am sure I'm not alone. From the first gigs seeing you in the Cathouse in Glasgow and the Queen's Hall in my hometown of Edinburgh for the closing date of the Images and Words European tour I have been the grateful beneficiary of all your music. I was close to tears as I remembered all the events in my life as you went through each album and gave us your insights into their creation. Thank you so much and thank you to Marlene and your family for supporting you through all the highs and lows of recording and the tours. God bless.
Mike, you always talk about how you have such a massive collection of bootlegs, and Dream Theater archived footage, demos, recordings etc. Now is the perfect time to archive all of that stuff on RU-vid! The band hasn't done anything with Ytse Jam records since 2013, and you alone probably have the biggest collection of DT material that has never seen the light of day. It would be a great way to spend time during quarantine, as well as giving the fans a look into the collection that you've been building for decades. I'm sure you have old footage of the Majesty days, demos that have never been released etc. It's something to consider!
"Euphoria Mourning" is one of the most underrated albums of all time. So glad Mike pointed that out. "Follow My Way" is my favorite one one this album, also.
I have to give it another serious listen. At the time it came out, I was/ still am a HUGE Soundgarden fan, and was expecting a Soundgarden album. I hardly played it before selling it, but many say it's a great record
I wasn't a huge Soundgarden fan, but Euphoria Mourning was solid. Steel Rain is a killer closer. I think Alain and Natasha can be thanked for a lot of that sound. Also, had to check my CD's spelling of "Mourning" after he mentioned that and, by golly he's right
The album just reeks of Alain's hand. I always encourage people to listen to Alain and Natasha's band Eleven. Great and original stuff you can't get anywhere else!
How? I’ve enjoyed his vids like this but honestly I haven’t been impressed at all. He has a lot of fairly standard stuff. Nothing even remotely “encyclopedic.” Not to mention this vid was half his own records. Having Ziggy Stardust and Cheap Trick doesn’t make you a music genius lol.
@@grubbn He mentioned several times that these 2 cabinets of albums are just the tip of the iceberg. Seeing only 2-3 sections of this small part of his vinyl collection doesn't make you a good judge of whether or not he qualifies as a "music genius".
I was there at the Radio City Music Hall on april, 1st 2006 when "Score" was recorded. It's one the best show, if not the best show I've ever seen. Everything was magical from the beginning to the end.
This is why DT was always inspiring and refreshing in all the years you were in the band. you knowledge and passion about music is huge. thank you Mr MP!
As a lifelong DT fan, this was SO MUCH FUN! So cool to hear some insight into the making of these albums and really heartwarming to see MP talk about them with such fondness. Can't wait to dive back in.
Mike you are on my top 5 drummers list (Phil Collins, Barriemore Barlow, John Bonham, Keith Moon, MP in no particular order). But more important to me you are responsible of two epics that chills me every time i played it, Octavarium and Nightmare to Remember......as long as i get older, 57 now, i have to be cautious when Octavarium finale is in my earphones as my heart is getting weaker year by year. Same feeling shared with Supper's Ready, Awaken, Xanadu or Darks Side to name a few. Thanks for your extraordinary music culture and skills. And please, we need more epics of Dream Theater with you.....
What a great journey to revisit all these DT's albuns! They're all part of my life for so long, following all the releases and listening to them since i was a kid, more than twenty years ago.
Too bad there were no non-MP era albums, would have loved to hear your thoughts on the newer albums, all personal issues aside, it should be all about the music.
Problem is, if he honestly doesn't like them, people are gonna say that he's just salty or something. Also given how things ended, I would totally understand if he barely listened to those albums.
Some of my fondest memories in life are the times I was fortunate enough to see Dream Theater live. One of my first concerts was the Train of Thought tour. It was surreal when the band walked out and went right into "As I Am". Like seeing my heroes, who I'd only seen in magazines and videos on a screen, come to life in front of me. Truly inspiring. I would then go on to see DT on the same tours that Mike spoke about in this video. The tour they did with Yes, Gigantour with Megadeth, and Progressive Nation with Opeth. Thank you for the memories Mike, I'll never forget them.
Without many record stores to go to and build friendships with the record store owner and workers, it is hard to discover hidden gem records and be turned onto new bands and artists. The series of videos Mr. Portnoy is doing here is like going back in time and going to the record store on a Saturday afternoon and learning and discovering music.
Fellow Long Islander here, grew up in essentially the same era as you. I'm a metalhead at heart, but I'm so glad to see I'm not the only Fishbone fan around. Thanks for sharing your collection and stories!
Mike, It was cool how you kept track of which songs you played in concert at each city. That was awesome, because I have seen DT 16 times and your method allowed me the chance to see pretty much every song live. Much appreciated!!!
Mike I love you so much as a musician and also as a human being, it's so interesting to share with you all these stuffs! All these moments with you are amazing. Can't wait to see you again on stage!
I'm learning soooo many artists and music that I have not tried before, so thankful MP for sharing all the knowledge. Looking forward for all the episodes.
Thanks Mike, appreciate these episodes, discovering some great bands. Was also an unforgettable experience sitting across the table from you and the rest of DT at the Auckland airport in New Zealand when you guys did your Black Clouds and Silver Linings tour
Was at the Score show. A great Easter egg to mention is that Metallica's S&M live album was playing in the lobby prior to the show starting. Hint hint!
Love this series! And I love hearing you explain DT albums, I'll add my vote to the growing list of people asking for an in-depth Octavarium video! Thanks mike
This is awesome Mike. Thanks to you and your first video I discovered 1st from the Bee Gees. Man oh man, I didn't see that one coming. Truly a masterpiece. All the best and keep them coming!
I have to Thank You for making this video series about 'part' of your vinyl collection. I love the way you provide your personal input on many other bands and artists having in consideration you are such cornerstone in Music History. Really, Thank You Mike!!! I hope you consider making an MP's Multiple Episode Video Series talking only about Octavarium. There are tons of things we would like to know about this Master Piece. There is such mysticism around this album. I have to admit around the Sys'Chaos times, I spent around a year and a half listening only DT stuff. I had nothing better to talk about by that time, so believe me, I would never get tired of listening to you. Thanks again Mike and see you on the next video. Peace.
Would you give us a tour of your "old" vinyl collection some day? I'd really like to hear you discuss those as well. Also, don't worry about talking too long or being too long winded. We'd like to hear everything you have to say about your music collection. Thanks for doing this!
IAW came out in July 92? I left home and went to uni in August 92 and it was my soundtrack already. Still is. Thank you for all of that, and I really appreciate these nerdy vids. Lotsa love from Sweden ❤️🇸🇪
Rh is videos then you show us all the disc you hace , demostrates us that you are a lmusic lover , not only a Baterist , you are a musician.in blood , long live to you , and I hope them I write all my comnets in realy Inglish , sorry but in my country we use ESPAÑOL , I Salute You and I hope sone day come down here , IN SOUTH AMERICA
„Train of Thought“ was my very first DT-Album and from that time on I was a huge DT-Fan. Luckily enough I was ably to see DT once in my life with Mike Portnoy, the best rock drummer of all time, just bevor he left the best band ever. That was in Conegliano, Italy.
my first Dream Theater album was Change of seasons, the one that is missing. it was on cassette, and the main song is still my favorite of this band. 23 minutes, absolute classic
I would love to see you dedicate a video to each of the albums you’ve played on, discussing the ins and outs of each record, the state of the band at the time, what that record means to you, etc. You’ve given the world so much incredible music and to hear your perspective on your entire recorded discography would be amazing.
