The veteran actor and gospel singer Dennis Quaid recounts his early career, what made him give up his dream of becoming a veterinarian, how he realized he had a problem with cocaine and what he did to fix it, how Jerry Lee Lewis taught him to play the piano, and what it was like playing Ronald Reagan for his upcoming movie. And at the end of the episode-he sings a song! The movie REAGAN is in theaters August 30. See the trailer here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-njLPMG8qZ5M.html

I met Ronald Reagan in New Orleans at a luncheon. The Secret Service emptied my purse and we got in line to meet him. I told him I was concerned bc he sounded like he had the sniffles. (Yes, I really said that) He said he had come from North Carolina and it was allergies. 3 times the photographer said Mr. President, we need to take the picture. We continued to talk. He had a glow about him. It was amazing. Like angels were there. My husband said nothing. Poor guy. Reagan put his arm around my waist and the photo was taken. When we left the hotel and we were walking to our car, his car was going down the street a short distance from us. He spotted us and waved. We waved back like old friends. It was like magic. I will never forget how wonderful a person he was.

Great memories. Thanks 🙏 for telling. I saw him at the North Texas food bank in south Dallas. Red Bird industrial area. It was noon, on South Cockrell Hill rd. I lived in Cockrell Hill about 6 miles north towards Dallas. I hardly ever went to lunch, that day we had no idea he was here. Heading to Burger King with my best still machinist buddy. We stopped, hardly anyone was there. I yelled out, welcome 🙏 to Dallas Mr. PRESIDENT Ronald…… he turned around, to my amazement !!! He said everyone LOVES Texas !!! He was the absolute best person ever !! Humble and kind !! Tough but smart. He has the bruises to show. I remember the secret service was everywhere. Y’all do know what Dallas do to president’s. I was 6 miles away in second grade L.O. Donald elementary school. I have no memory about that weird awful day. I remember the funeral on our black and white tv. God BLESS ALL our great President’s. You honor the office…. Not the man or woman !! See… I’m not sexist !! lol. I’m a 1955 Gladewater Tx. Lake O’ the Pines baby boomer !! God Blessed our terrific UNITED STATES 🇺🇸 !! Thanks 🙏

I was a kid in the 80s and it was the only decade I’ve lived where things felt so wholesome and good. That there was a clear line between good guys and bad guys, I felt, and we were the good guys. Reagan was a big part of how proud I was. He was a good man, funny, very personable, and somebody I really looked up to as a leader. What a wonderful man he was, I really miss that 80s feeling.

My Dad passed away in 2021, born in 1927. Worked for General Electric for 33 years. I worked for that company 3 years, with my dad, until they closed the plant down in San Leandro, Ca. But all this talk about Ronald Reagan and GE, before my dad passed, we spent lots of time together, and he told me about a meeting that he attended, and Ronald Reagan was there. He met Ronald Reagan. Pretty cool. Dennis shares some details about how Ronald Reagan, being the Spokesperson for General Electric, actually wanted to go and tour the GE facilities and meet the employees of the company. That confirms what My dad told me, thank you so much for sharing that. 41 minutes and 50 seconds into your podcast is when Dennis talks about that. Thank you again.

My grandmother after a very difficult time during the depression, they finally had enough money to buy a refrigerator. It was a GE Delux. That was 1940. My grandmother took care of the frig until the mid 90's and could not live in the house alone anymore. I got the frig and we still use it daily. It's a backup, but I am in it several times a day. The frig has never had any service, we just defrost it and clean it once a month or so and now it's 84 years old. It's amazing. Buy American.

I saw a Reagan biopic and they gave his speeches at GE facilities much credit for his presidency. By meeting and talking with working folks like your dad all across the country he learned what they cared about and how to reach them. They said he honed what would become his presidential stump speeches during that time becoming The Great Communicator.

Every time I see that part of the film I just cringe. Especially the emotional crying breakdown with Betty in the motel room. Having seen plenty about the real Gus, I know that wasn't that man at all. It's kind of like the bits in "Apollo 13" where Fred Haise snipes at Jack Swigert and they start yelling at each other when you know from Lovell's own account that nothing like that ever happened. I just think it's disrespectful to those men to portray them like that. Sometimes Hollywood needs to be secure enough with the truth to know there's plenty of real drama there.
@dreamerliteraryproductions9423
@dreamerliteraryproductions9423 2 месяца назад
@@Russell_Huston Indeed!!! It's seems to me a terrible disregard of the truth and disservice to the actual man being smeared. And yes, some of the Apollo 13 scenes definitely take liberties- I've heard recordings of their conversations at that time of the supposed spats and there were no temper tantrums or even raised voices. It's sad how often reality isn't exciting enough for film writers, so they embellish the story. Ugh.

What was so commendable about Reagan was his deep hatred for Communism but his even deeper love for America, its gvt and Freedom. Although he was against Communism, whenever anyone tried to stop Communists from speaking at the Union meetings, Reagan would stop the meeting and allow them to speak in an orderly fashion. He would repeatedly stress he did not agree with them but this is America and he would die for their right to speak. His speeches from the meetings are on RU-vid. Reagan was an excellent Pres and a great man.

Speaking of the disparity between the Soviets and us, the thing that really brought it home for me was watching a documentary about a Typhoon submarine that was filmed in Russia. The captain of this largest nuclear sub in the world was shown returning home to his tiny apartment with a steel door in a slum high rise. That same captain of any American sub would easily have a large home on an acre or more. I was in the Navy from 82 to 88, so I remember Reagan well. I remember I was on a road trip from Florida to Virginia when he gave the speech after the Challenger disaster. I was balling my eyes out. We all know that nobody writes their own speeches, but at least his presentation of the speech was incredible and heartfelt.

Ohh man, he definitely was a great Doc but I don’t know, Val Kilmer was unreal, I haven’t stopped quoting him in that role since the day it came out! Ironically, just got a T-shirt yesterday with his face on it that says “I’m in my prime”. The wifi in my home is “Huckleberry”. I love “Wyatt, you’re an oak”. He was amazing, I was a teenager when it came out, loved it the first time and the 100th time as an older man. I’m embarrassed to say that I don’t know which was more accurate to the real man, and agree 100% that Dennis was a great Doc, but Val Kilmer is one of the few movie characters that really amazed me and still does if I watch Tombstone today!! The other actors were not all that bad either! Both movies were unreal, odd they were both put out that close to one another…

A few years after he passed I was at his retirement home with his grandson. Our understanding had always been his name was Mike. He was known as Big Mike in his circle of co-workers and friends. Well, Adam picks up Big Mikes bullhorn. He used it on building construction jobs in the Boston area. Adam looks at me and says, "I just found out from my mother that Grandpas name was Paul. They called him Big Mic because he was always in the bullhorn on the job site keeping things rolling." BIG MIC. And so the story goes.

I was amazed that when he would answer a question, he did not look at the host, he looks at the camera or the audience. I was so impressed by that and he seemed so genuine. Fast forward many years and I was obsessed with the movie, Frequency. It brought be back to a time when I was growing up and my Dad was a firefighter and for some reason I just LOVED that movie. I have had a celebrity crush on him. Can't wait to see Regan!!

I was stationed at Port Hueneme with the Seabees and I got a chance to work on Reagan’s Ranch. He was not there at the time but he had his dogs and horses roaming around on the property. It is secluded.

Attending a Business School, Baruch College in New York City that was deeply entrenched in liberalism, entitlement, grants etc. I worked one year prior to to pay for it when I first started to hear what Reagan would say. His speeches. The debates against Jimmy Carter living through an economy that was crushing hopes and dreams. I voted for Reagan twice seeing how he restored my faith and hope of a future for me and those willing to WORK for it. He was and is in my mind the greatest communicator as President and blessed with a common sense a great wife in Nancy who supported his rise, from SAG ,GE pitchman ,other products ,Governor of California and two time President. My favorite President of the 20th century.

Wait, the movie The Right Stuff bombed?!! Not in my family. We told everyone about it and everyone in town was crazy about it but again we lived in Tullahoma Tennessee, which is where the largest wind tunnel in the world is and we tested everything for the space program so in a town that was 80% engineers I guess we Appreciated how wonderful the movie was

The segment where the guys were talking about President Regan showing Gorbechev and Yeltzyn around reminded me of something I heard way back in the 80's,, WE MUST KEEP and PRESERVE AMERICA AND OUR WAY OF LIFE BECAUSE WE ARE THE LAST BASTION OF FREEDOM,, THERE'S NO OTHER PLACE TO GO!

I served in the U.S. Navy (USS Caron DD 970) during the Reagan administration. We did a lot of spying and had our share of interactions with the Soviet Navy. Morale was high, and we were proud of our country, our service, and our president. When my wife and I saw the movie, I found myself crying several times. It brought back many memories.
