Mike is the role model all young men need. The dude seems completely genuine, and no one is doing more to push young men and women into the trade fields than him.

It broke my heart when Thomas said he "couldn't afford to go to the funeral" just broke my heart. What a fine young person he is, he brings so much to the world, well done Thomas. And well done too Mike, but I'm sure you're used to hearing that by now but you too bring much to the world.

My wife and I took the three day survival training class with Thomas years ago! It was fantastic, and information I'm glad I possess. Thanks for showing everyone the wealth of information Thomas and the Survival Training School have to offer.

A friend of my dad, a caretaker of one of the ranches in those mountains was bragging about how he knew about anyone who was up there and caught them. When I mentioned he never caught me he said a kid would never go up into those mountains by themselves. When I described the truck he was in the previous weekend, his dog in the back riding on top of a bunch of firewood, and that he had cut that wood in a certain ravine and it was live oak and not black oak as he said, he didn't know what to say. He and most people don't know if you aren't in a car, you can hear any car for miles around and even if you stand out on the open they drive by without even noticing.

Been watching Mr Rowe since I was a child. I have always admired you sir! Keep doing everything you do. It's relieving to see how many people can be both successful and happy. It gives me hope for myself and my own happiness.

Thanks again for continuing to grind like this, Mike! You could've easily just relaxed, but you're still out there showcasing amazing do-gooders... and we love it!

As a vet I can so relate to not being able to make it to a funeral of someone you love. The need for something to break is real. Glad he found a useful outlet. The world needs more men like him.

Tehachapi is hardly nowhere, but it is a unique place with the desert on one side, the high sierras on the other and the most fertile valley in north america on the other. When a kid, from 12 on, used to tell my dad on a Friday night, "I'm going up into the hills, be back Sunday night." Imagine what would happen to a parent now who just let their kid wonder around in the mountains as a kid. Didn't take no survival course, just learned the hard way. In summer I could go out as long as I wanted. The great thing being, once up into the mountains, one almost never saw anyone else.

I moved from Texas Hill County to the Arkansas Mountains two years ago. They're two very different landscapes. This video reminds me to take Mountain survival classes for when my family and I go hiking into the mountains. There are basics for all survival conditions but each area has its different challenges and needs to survive.

give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. teach a man to fish and he will always be able to eat. teaching is a rare skill for those who dont need money. but a true teacher teaches to see the eyes light up with newly acquired knowledge that will last a lifetime. no amount of money can make a teacher feel that. its an amazing feeling.

15:30 - 16:40 is why we all watch any program that Mike Rowe is involved in. The way he can cut to the bare bones on why the subject is important to us and why it is important to the person who is teaching us.

You haven’t really made a fire. Until you were burnt and yet still determined to make it. Just like you haven’t really owned a knife. Until it made you bleed! It’s just part of life. A lot of people have forgotten that.

Growing up in Utah, I was a Boy Scout and we learned a great deal of these subjects. One thing I never learned correctly, however, was orienteering (navigation with a compass) and NOW I regret that lapse. On the other hand, I have a well-stocked survival kit in every vehicle I own and several plastic totes with disaster prep supplies in them, all informed by those long-ago days.

This just scratched the surface and that's good because it means you can make more episodes covering many other survival skills. I look forward to Mike discovering the simplicity and ease of a figure 4 deadfall in some future show.

Most excellent! I took a 30 foot fall on Mt. Elden in Flagstaff, AZ in 1986. SAR tried to use a helo, but just as it was hovering overhead, a front was moving in and they had to wave it off leaving the SAR team to lower me down the cliff face and steep slope to the 4x4 ambulance some 200ft below. That all took almost 8 hours. I had a backpack survival kit with me and used a few of the items to keep hydrated, protected from the elements and signal the SAR team (blinking the flashlight with SOS Morse Code). I appreciate this episode and those who produced it...good stuff, Mike. I fell the 30ft and had some time to think, knowing I was going to fall. I knew gravity was not going to take a break and it was going be something I had no control over. Turning my focus to my Maker and acknowledging this was up to Him must have meant something as I don't remember the fall, just coming-to. I looked over toward a noise to see a squirrel looking at me as if to ask, "How'd you get here?" I thought to myself, "A mistake". I'd landed on a fairly flat bed of rocks, but I felt ok. Later that night, the Emergency Doctor would agree, nothing serious had resulted from the fall. At most, I may have had a mild concussion. I did not have a headache though I had a small bump on my head. My sister clipped the newspaper article and shows it to me on occasion. I still keep in touch with the squirrel. Just kidding, but I do smile about that when I remember my adventure mishap. It could have turned out much differently, but it did not. I have to blame God for the good ending 'cause I got no other explanation.

The smoke also helps chopper pilots see the wind conditions at ground level as they like to turn the bird so it's facing into the wind on takeoffs and landings, similar to an airplane. It just makes things easier.

Being from the desert myself ... and having been stuck out in it more than a time or two ... I give this video a "most excellent". 👍

My number one survival rule is: Never hike in an area that has no water, is too hot to survive the mid day sun and people never lived in. So far this rule has kept me alive.

Sort of like a California ferrier. He gets out his forge, makes a big show to bang out a horseshoe, takes three hours, and charges two hundred fifty bucks to shoe a horse. Unlike the others, who go and buy the ready made horseshoes, bend them to fit, hammer it on and charge 40 bucks for the half an hour of work.

What material did you use to attach the arrow to the stick?

A particularly good how-to with the Atlatl. Many survival experts talk about the atlatl, but almost nobody actually shows you anything about it. It was not just a squirrel and rabbit tool. It was a big game hunting tool if you had enough people with you to be effective.

The one place I wanted to stay when working on the awful NMCI project at China Lake was Ridgecrest, CA. A short hop from Kern County. Great people. Amazing topography. I'd hoped to stay through April, which was when the desert apparently blooms, but it wasn't to be. Death Valley is absolutely stunning at night. We had a Chinese guy with us who didn't know what the Milky Way was. He got a front seat in the best remote area to see that phenomenon. Fantastic people out there. They treated us well, and gave us the full experience of a small town with only two bars. Hope you're all doing well at "The Partners"!

I agree about what he said about the suffering. The outings I did that were the hardest, were the ones that I learned more, was proudest of and suffered the most. Nature is honest...if you didn't suffer, its because of you. If you did suffer, thats also because of you.
