Not many know about Mike Zuglan. I saw him take down player after player that came to Albany that wanted to gamble. In 14.1 he took cash from Steve Mizerak, Jim Rempe, Ray Martin and other players of that caliber. In 9 ball, he was just as deadly. He was also a top 3 cushion player, often spotting gamblers 15-10.
@lindastevens3547
@lindastevens3547 4 года назад
@@FIVE-0-APOCALYPTO Siegel always edged Zuglan out in tournament after tournament, Zuglan, if he took 2nd place, it was to Siegel. I once asked Mike Siegel why he always seemed to beat Mike Zuglan and his reply shocked me, because he thinks the world of himself. Anyway he said "I think it may have been rolls that determined the winner." The humble reply shocked me, because he is known as "Mike the Mouth" and that's why he can't do commentary at pool. He keeps switching the subject back to 'me." Believe me, he had his ass handed to him many times by Earl. Not at 14.1, but 9 ball. He also told me he mastered pool using a 12.5mm tip and always stuck with it. Players at his level are way at the top for knowledge and can execute anything difficult.

I have the program for this event hanging on my billiard room wall. Back then when mike was in the zone you just knew missing was not going to happen. Old school straight pool pattern play. No draw shots on the break all the way up table and then halfway down again.The players today are great but they seem to play straight pool with a 9 ball twist. Different generations i guess.

Its just that straight isnt common anymore. If they were to play a few back to back straight tournaments, amd they pradticed and learned more, they would develop the pattern play. They seem to be more shotmakers. Sigel for example has three or four ways to play a break shot, little tricks he learned growimg up in an era when starihht was srill going strong in poolhalls, guys today just try and smack into the pack, i do it myself, thats why my high run is 20. Amazing run. I don't think Sigel gets the credit he deserves. I understand players today are better shot makers, but not many of them know the intriquicies of the game and the tables as much as Sigel does. I think it's safe to say we wish he never retired so early. On a side note, was this a double elimination tournament? Or did they do round robin play before moving onto elimination rounds?
@MrKinghuman
@MrKinghuman 4 года назад
Better shot makers than sigel or strickland? In their prime i dont think so. Shaw is a freaky shotmaker, but overall i dont think todays players are better shot makers. Maybe, i dont knkw if theres stats, but sigel made long shots like they were hangers like the opening shot of this match. I dont need much more proof than thag

It must be me cause this looked kind of sloppy and lucky the first time seeing it after hearing from numerous ppl this is one of the best 150 and outs you'll ever see. It's been a good 20 years so I'll give it a fair assessment. At the time what I felt was way more impressive, 1989 14.1, same event, mizerak vs sigel. I think it was Oliver Ortmann's 1st major us win. But the mizerak sigel match, miz doesn't run 150, more like 105 or 106? But the way he went through those racks with his slow confidence, contrasted by sigel's up and down, frantic, body english, chatty kathy demeanor, I'll take the 105 run anyway. Plus mike seemed to get lucky a lot. Again, it's difficult cause no one gets under my skin like he does so I'll watch objectively
