Terence McClain you mean ron jeremys evil twin right? Tomsula makes erikson the head coach before mike nolan look smart. At least erikson had an excuse for his idiocy he was a freaking drunk. Whats tomsulas exscuse he was used as a soccer ball as a baby?
Singletary had 50% of what it takes to be a great coach. He has the tenacity, love, emotion and intensity. He just needed a way to transfer that into his players. Kinda like magic johnson, he loved the game so much and had such a drive that when he saw players who didnt have that, he didnt know what to do.
Yeah I always thought of him as a great Drill Instructor just not a true general. I thought he instilled great values in his guys, he was inspiring, he just wasn't a very good tactician.
Magic Johnson when he stepped away from coaching---I'm paraphrasing but it was basically "When I played, Kareem, Kurt Rambis and I sat in the locker room after wins or losses and talked about what we had to do to get another ring. I walk into this locker room and hear these guys talking about who has the nicer cell phone. I can't deal with this."
Davis was a flash in the pan, the product of a being a primary focal point (to his credit, admittedly) of his team's red zone offense for a few years and not that much more aside from his size/athleticism. He is fortunate that his coaches dialed so many play calls that were engineered specifically to feed him the ball. IMO this really inflated his value, at least his perceived value. Mark my words, he may not be all that old -- Vernon is 5-7 years younger than Antonio Gates (who is unusually old but still a top-5 TE in the NFL regardless of his age) -- but he has already played his best football. I mean to say that ("his best football") in every sense of the phrase; in a literal sense, statistically... however you wanna slice it. His stats may climb next season, and probably will, relative to this past year's injury-plagued disappointment. How can they not?? But regardless of that, Davis is well on his way to reverting back to the selfish player he initially appeared to be when issues both on and off the field had many of us convinced he would be a TOTAL bust, especially given his 3rd overall NFL pedigree. It's in his character to take shortcuts, put himself before the team, and rely on his physical gifts to get by... such is the attitude responsible for him *almost* never even getting his big payday at all. Anyone who gives him a big contract on the back nine of his career deserves the disappointment they are setting themselves up for.
@@detpistons4l401 Because it's the "coach ripping on a player in public" trope that the media hates. No matter how correct the coach is, the media will rip the coach. In the end, he was right for going on this tirade. He wanted to win so badly that he wanted only people who wanted to win, not people who wanted to lose. Vernon Davis slapping a player in the face for no reason, and then getting a 15 yard penalty on top of it is a losers mentality. Can't win when you take penalties like that.
This speech reminds me of what I go through every Saturdays at work. I tell my co-workers that I’d rather work with 2 people on shift than work with 1 person knowing that person is going to be deadweight and I have to carry him. Cannot work with him. Cannot make money with him. Can’t do it.
This is who the Lions need as a head coach! If you listen to Vernon Davis now, he credits Mike Singletary with turning him around. I pray some team gives him another shot.
Mike Singletary change the culture of this team. He is the reason that Jim Harbrough had the formula and pieces, all he had to do was take them the next level, and that is what Jim did.
In many ways, Mike Singleterry had a huge role in making the 49ers the team they are today. He disciplined the players and made them check their egos out the door. Humility. Without it, Jim Harbaugh wouldn't of had the success he had (having to deal with entitled brats). Made the team development that much better.
No he didn't. Mike Singletary is a silly man that likes to joke around and have fun. Mike Singletary performed in the Bears embarrassing "Superbowl Shuffle" song where he showed his true colors. The man was a class clown and shame on people for falling for this tough guy discipline nonsense. Mike Singletary would rather be at a karaoke bar laughing the night away.
The Niners needed Singletary to come back and bench Vernon again this season. Holding out and missing practice for more money? Can't catch shit all season? Cannot play with them. Cannot win with them. Cannot coach with them. CAN'T DO IT.
You do realize Singletary performed in the infamous Bears "Superbowl Shuffle" right? At heart he is silly and likes to play around too much. That's why I find it amazing people fell so hard for his tough guy discipline schtick. Freaking unreal.
As a long time 49ers fan. This is the coach that made the 49ers defense. That in turn made the forty niners a top nfl team again. I miss him I wish we could have him back as a defensive mind again
never got the credit he deserved..he helped to reverse the luck of this franchise, but never was able to take that next step with them because of that 2010 season..
Mike, please come & be a coach here in Cleveland... I loved your intensity as a player & i love it now... Hope you make it to the stars in the NFL... Always a fan... Celestino...
he sounds like my dad... i dont know how many times ive heard him say "im from the old school" and stuff like attitude is everything and it takes heart lol... so i can fully appreciate this rant... CANT DO IT!
For everyone commenting that Mr. Singletary was the “stepping stone,” and the dutiful “drill instructor” to prepare the Niners for “General” Harbaugh; it did my heart good to see them come up short in the Super Bowl. How fitting that it was another legendary Middle Linebacker that put a stop their chances in that game. I love the cosmos.
honestly....this guy is the back bone to this niner success....without him honestly this team would not be as mentally tough and hard nosed without mike...thank u mike....you probably wont get the love but u deserve it
Singletary is only lacking the x's and o's part of the game. Put him as a defensive coordinator for 2-3 seasons under a smart coach. Give him the way to turn his passion to game management and he'd be amazing.
We need men like this, forth right, to the point and straight forward. Excellent. These are the great leader types......believe me I know. Absolutely awesome !
AMEN BROTHER--- I always said He set this team in the right motion, and got the quality guys we needed to win ,, he just didnt have the head coaching pedigree.. .i wish he could be on this team as a linebackers coach or something so he could experience the ride to the superbowl ...
This was not the day after the game, this was immediately following the game. I was at this game and listened to this press conference live on the radio on the way home.
You can say what you want about Mike Singletary as a coach, but Vernon Davis learned a valuable lesson that day. The moment helped mold him into the player and teammate he is today. Good for you, Vernon.
Mike Ditka said that the day before the game, he was talking to the offense while Singletary was in the next room giving the defense a motivational speech. While it started out quiet, within minutes, Samurai Mike was screaming at the top of his lungs and the defensive players were throwing chairs and knocking over tables.
when Vernon Davis caught that TD, this was what I remember at the same time......Singletary had a tremendous effect on the 49ers as A TEAM. very evident.
Scootie, you are right on the money. "Can't do it!" Best soundbite from him since "somebody knock him out!" in reference to Brett Favre during Singletary's last game in 1992.
Great interview... he can be a bit over-the-top if I may but I respect him as a great player and a fiery coach... he is helping San Fran get better each year. I think the niners will make the playoffs this year.
I love his old school style and he did the right thing by pulling JT O Turnover for Shaun Hill and sending Vernon to the locker room early for his emotions hurting the team. It's about the team first. I love his old school style, it's all about RESPECT!!
