These stock and of course superstock guys have literally TONS of research and development in their classes. They are forced to develop stock parts by spending big money and big time instead of paging through a jegs or summit catalog buying the trickest parts that alot of people mismatch and only achieve average results . Im betting 305 with at LEAST 1.6 HP per cubic inch. These guys get it done with what they have. Btw it's not a $2k engine. For example, a Patterson racing 283 to 350 ci stock starts at $27k and a superstock engine starts at $42k !!!
I race K/SA in an 87 Monte Carlo SS. I chose that car because of the stock heads, intake, transmission, and rear axle. I bought 10 sets of 081 heads just to get 2 that flowed in the 185 cfm @ .400 lift before machining the valve angle. I run the stock intake and a 15 year old built Barry Grant 750 quadrajet. My car is an 11.70s car @ 117 mph. Watching this car run he needs a lower (higher numerically) rear gear. I use a 4.56 with 29X9 Firestones. His car has a lot more in it but hes bound to the crap 601 heads.
No doubt it's a 305, a DZ 302 launches that exact same way with gears and sticky tires. That bog on the motor at launch when the slicks bite is a dead giveaway.
thats because hes got too tall a gear in it and the way it takes too long between the gears and its not reved out as he crosses the finish line. With my engine in that car with his 4 speed and a 4.56 rear gear I could get that car into the mid 11s np.
302 is a big bore and short stroke, where a 305 is a small bore and longer stroke. The 302s revved alot higher. Completely different engines. 305s make pretty good low end torque but fall flat at 4,000rpm. Guess different heads and cams could change that though.
@@chargerfish1 The 302 has the bigger bore, shorter stroke. 305 smaller bore, longer stroke. The Chevy 307 splits the difference. 305 having more torque due to longer stroke and smaller bore? In theory, but not in practice. Someone built all 3 engines to DZ 302 specs identical compression, cam, intake-exhaust... They all 3 made the same power within like 200 rpm. Very narrow margin. Beyond a certain point a 302 shines brightest due to being able to fit larger valves, better breathing cylinder heads. Want to see something interesting? I guess the engine didn't know it's a 305. For those who don't believe a 305 can run like that, go to an NHRA or whoever, National or Divisional event where they are running stock and super stock. You are in for a education.
I race an 87 Monte Carlo SS in Stock eliminator K/SA with an L69 making 409 hp. it runs a consistent 11.70s @ 116+ mph. Ive put more Ford GT Mustangs, Chevy Camaros, Dodge Darts and Dusters, and Pontiac Trans Ams on the trailer than i care to remember, with a 305 and unported heads.

my 1987 Monte Carlo SS K/SA runs 11.70s @ 116+ mph with unported 081 heads, stock intake, and 750 quadrajet. On the dyno it makes 409 hp @ 6400 rpm. In NHRA stock eliminator you get torn down at the drop of a hat and if it doesnt pass inspection you get disqualified right then and there. They check the bore size above the ring wear, intake and head casting numbers, they CC the intake ports and combustion chambers, and they check the stroke length. The NHRA NO NOT screw around in Stock Eliminator or Super Stock. I race both classes and theyre the most competitive in all of NHRA.
@@codyfoster7574 11:1 87 305 .060 bore (JE Pistons) with 081 heads, Callies crank, Manley rods, custom ground Lunati solid lifter cam (248 duration intake 258 duration exhaust 106 LSA 102 ICL .403 / .415 lift) is my old cam specs the new 1 im not saying. Stock intake and a Barry Grant built Quadrajet (I had them build 3) I had built in 2005 before he went out of business. The new cam makes 10 more hp and revs 100 rpm higher due to the limitations of the stock intake.
The only way it wouldn't be a 305 anymore is if he bored out the cylinders. Changing the parts doesn't change the volume of the block. A 383 is a 350 bored out. But it isn't called a 350 anymore. Because it isn't. So, this 305, is still a 305.
