The Los Angeles Angels got some bad news about Mike Trout yesterday, as he was diagnosed with a torn left meniscus that will cause him to miss some time this season. On today's show, we'll share reactions from Trout, Ron Washington, Perry Minasian, and others, and we'll discuss how the Angels will handle this moving forward. We'll update you on the roster moves they made in light of the injury, and we'll provide you a detailed explanation of Trout's options and when those options would lead to his return.
Plus, we've got your recap of last night's game against the Phillies that saw the Halos battle back from 3-0, take the lead, and enter the 9th ahead before Carlos Estevez blew the save and the lead. How did the Angels nearly secure the series victory before the Halos' closer gave up the win? We'll give you all the details in segment 3.

It's only May 1 and we are already done. Can Angel fans now stop blowing smoke up my skirt explaining how great our team is? Minasian is a genius? Arte's really a good guy? Rendon and Trout are out again in their usual order of disappearance. Hicks, who was good enough to be our opening day right fielder is now not good enough four weeks into the season. Canning & Sandoval have been Canning & Sandoval, which might make a great law firm, but not a rotation hammer. Estevez still isn't a closer. Reyes still can't get guys out. This is painful to witness!

I read you loud and clear. As a Marlins fan, you know that I understand. To me, though, there's no reason to write off all value in the season. It can and should be used for players to get ABs/innings. try some role situations, showcase players for possible trades, and evaluate for next season. Sounds obvious, but I guarantee Washington has plenty of things he wants to do and plans to adapt for the long haul.
@nsanps
@nsanps Месяц назад
The issue is that this team doesn’t fully commit to the rebuilding process, most teams sell or trade for prospects and don’t bring hicks, they play their adells and moniaks to see what they are made of. By not fully committing they create this illusion that the team will go somewhere. Drury, Moore, ward, rengifo, rendon and even trout when health should be considered as trade pieces, if interest arises. The hope is for the future. Hope that some of the young guys can become good mlb regulars, hope that the angels draft well and a few years from now have a run, most teams have those cycles, the angels window ended long ago. It’s time to fully commit. Wait until the deadline and go get prospects.

@@nsanps You are 100% correct! I've grown tired of Minasian's act. Listening to him explain we are built as a team and not built on one player is nauseating. How are we built? What trades did he make in the off season? We didn't sign a single starting fielder or pitcher and refused to sign a DH. We are trotting out the same players year after year. What pitcher have we developed with success? How many pitchers are we using frm the draft where we took all pitchers?
@bhbecca

@@MiamiHeathaveL23 There's a big problem when you say this season is about the kids because it's not what management has repeatedly said. They said we were going to be compete-- right? They said they were better overall without Ohtani. And when you talk about developing our young players-- if that's the case why was Hicks the starting right fielder over Moniak? Moniak has not been allowed to even play three straight games so far this season and he earned that right last year. They pinch hit for him on his third and 4th at bat. He came into the season full of confidence and the Angels have gone out of their way to torpedo the kid. If they didn't believe in him they should have traded him in the off season when his value was high. Moniak didn't play until the 4th game of the season. Adell is just now being allowed to play every day. Not exactly a method to develop young players. Who are the young pitchers on this staff we are developing? Soriano that they ping ponged back and forth between relieving and starting? Detmers and who else? Certainly not Sandoval and Canning playing in their 6th ineffective seasons? Who in the bullpen are we developing? Is there a single young stud reliever? We don't have a single young position player in the minors close to making this team-- not one, and certainly not as a long term solution. What starting pitching prospect is close to contributing as a rotation anchor? Our team ERA is second to last in all of baseball behind only Colorado that plays at Coor's field. This team is not close to being a winner or even having a long term strategy.

I would like to be sympathetic to Trout's predicament with another injury, but it's also hard to avoid just confronting the reality that Trout has been injury-prone for the last four years or so and can't be counted on. As it stood prior to the injury, he was not exactly lighting it up as a hitter, though his HRs were eye-catching. So once again, we have Trout lost for at least a few weeks and Rendon out for however long it is on the current IL stay. Neither of them are reliable to stay healthy and contribute to a team that needs standout players. Rendon at least made public comments about how frustrated he is at being injured, as if he might actually care about being a contributor. Trout is obviously emotionally torn up over this latest injury. But it's become all too common for him to be unavailable.
@LockedOnAngels
@LockedOnAngels Месяц назад
It's the reality of these guys playing into their 30s. The problem is, it doesn't seem to matter what they do (protect him, let him play with the training wheels off, etc.). The inevitability of injuries is all too real now.
@surfwriter8461
@surfwriter8461 Месяц назад
@@LockedOnAngels I don't consider age a main factor in Trout's injuries. He's 32, trains well, and has been getting seriously injured for, what, four years in a row now. I know the risk of injury is there all along, but in Trout's case I say again, he's injury-prone. Others play into their thirties without the history of repeated injuries like Trout has suffered.

The baseball nerds love trout because analytics says there's no difference between a game tying homerun and a homerun in a ten run game. They also say RBI is overrated, but it's always the same guys who drive in a hundred runs every year. The guy had 10 homeruns and 14 rbi. I don't think trout has ever had a walk off. And he's always injured.
@surfwriter8461
@surfwriter8461 Месяц назад
@@gregpettis1113 He had a period of years when he truly was one of the greats in the game, and I think he still has some greatness in him. But for the last four years he's been a drag on the team, playing in less than half the games and repeatedly getting injured. He stopped stealing bases after that injury to his hand, but this year he started stealing bases again. But I noticed the same thing you did--HRs almost equal to the number of RBI (Rs scored slightly more than RBI) So when he wasn't hitting solo HRs, he was having little impact on the team's scoring.

@@LockedOnAngels What reason was there at the time? I think Trout's decision had more to do with blind loyalty and a desire to remain in southern California. I don't believe there was much basis for a pipe dream about the Angels becoming a serious contender, certainly not with Moreno as owner.

@LockedOnAngels Месяц назад
@@surfwriter8461 A big reason? Ohtani. They brought him in to help the rotation, and by the time of Trout's extension, he had his first pitching injury with the idea that he'd be back the next year. @@LockedOnAngels I see your point but don't think that should have given Trout a lot of hope for things changing dramatically. One or two additional players, even with a massive talent like Ohtani, would not turn a mediocre team around. I don't recall the timing but never thought the Angels were going big on high-caliber signings. I liked Rendon at the time and thought he could help, but it was another huge investment in a single player on offense when they've needed quality pitching for many years. Sources say he will need surgery. IMO he's likely done for the season only playing 24 games. The time schedule for surgery and rehab all done in 5 months is pushing it. Wash just play the young guys everyday now. Kevin Pillar, Cole Tucker, Ehire Adrianza, and Miguel Sano are just delaying the youth progression. Losing Trout is a tough blow. However, we will find out what Rengifo, Ward, Schanuel, Adell, Moniak, Neto and O’hoppe have. However, I do think we can score runs. Pitching is our problem as usual! If our pitching can fix itself who knows. I am glad we hired Ron Washington he is an excellent teacher of the game. Our young players will improve. I love Trout but he was 10-83 at the plate. However, playoff tickets are not forthcoming.
@mattosso7676
@mattosso7676 Месяц назад
We're going to see that placing faith in our young players is misguided. They aren't winning many games with this group. They could only manage 10 wins with Trout leading the majors with 10 HRs. if you're keeping track (and I am), that's more than Schanuel - 2, Neto -2, O'Hoppe - 2, Rengifo - 2, Moniak - 1 and Drury - , COMBINED. Since it's CLEAR the Angels pitching staff is incapable of preventing runs, the Angels need higher run productions. This means they need to go back playing Scioscia-style small ball. That means they need to have better, more quality ABs. They have the 9th most SOs in the entire league, but without Trout's bat, are ranked 27th in HRs. Usually high SO are a byproduct of being a power hitter. That's not the case. The Angels have no true power hitter without Trout.

I feel for Trout, because he loves playing, but at his age, I would take the surgery that will be more reliable in the long run, especially with a contract that last for six more years. Trout should be thinking of the long term. If the procedure that takes him out for the entire season is more reliable, he should really consider that, because it could become a yearly problem in the future if he doesn't. Some of the young players have been really stepping it up and in fact have been producing a lot more than Trout offensively in the last three weeks.

This training/conditioning staff is still awful. This season is long gone. Perry needs to flush the rentals, get a good return, call up some of the prospects (would like to see Caden Dana and Cole Fontenelle), then just maybe someone in the staff (hopefully arte or Perry) makes the right decision in investing in getting a strong strength and conditioning staff, that’s been our Achilles heel for the past 4-5 years, like I get the body wears down but there’s a point where a player has to limit themselves to prevent that injury, then eventually have the time to get back to being 100%. I know these guys have no expectations, but at the same time, but this is not what they need, they have a tough schedule ahead of them, I know that Washington is doing everything he can to win games, and Perry’s trying to do what he can with the 40-man. Moreno can't use injuries as a talking point if he refuses to sign healthy players. Rendon hasn't been healthy since he signed with the Angels. And Trout has also struggled to stay healthy for 3 of the past 4 years. This will make 4 years in the last 5, that Trout will miss significant time to injuries. This is who the Angels are. This is who they have been for the last 5 years. Only now we don't have Ohtani to single-handedly keep us in games. THIS is EXACTLY WHY Minasian needed to go big during the free agency. And, yet, with the exception of a handful of relievers, Angels management decided to stand pat. This is a failure to not only break the pattern that has kept them from competing, but to see the big picture ENTIRELY. No, it's not due to some brilliant strategy that fans can't see. No, it's not a result of some advance analytics that fans don't understand. It's due to arrogance and being too cheap too want to field a competitive team. It's due to an owner who doesn't give a sh!t about winning. If he did, he would do what other teams do: pay money for free agents and try to compete to win. Instead of swinging for the fences, the Angels didn't even try. No, it's not that they went down looking. It's far worse: They checked their swing during free agency. They pretended to try to improve the team, but couldn't fully commit. So here we are. Again. Almost 30 games in and the Angels have the 5th worst record in MLB. (And that was with Trout's league-leading 10 HRs.) Rendon is injured and Trout is injured. So is Stephenson, the ONE free agent that was supposed to make an impact on the Angels W/L record. Sound familiar??? It should. Just watch any of the previous 4 seasons and it's like watching a rerun. Only without the most electrifying player to entertain and distract us from the ineptitude of a franchise that is content to lay dormant in the mud and filth at the bottom of the league. By the time Trout returns, the season will be over. Hell, it's ALREADY over. So why even bother?? We all knew this year was going to bed a challenge. And we all knew that it was "iffy: that both Rendon and Trout would make it through the entire season. But this has been worse than any of us could've predicted. Realistically, this is likely going to the first year in Angels' history, where the team loses 100 games. All the hopeium in the world can't save a franchise with an owner who seems content to just make his money and go home. It's almost as if he HATES his own team and his own fans and is INTENT on punishing them year after year after year after year. It all starts at the top. As long as Moreno owns this team, this is what we can expect every season. Sorry for the long rant, didn't expect to write this much. But as a lifelong Angels fan, I needed to purge myself.

The Angels always seem dishonest on reporting how long players will be on the IL. I expected Silseth back this month. Torn meniscus from what I read should be 90 days, but Angels management will probably say 6-8 weeks. We have some of our best players out for a long time. So "no expectations " will come down to dont expect to see all-star play till they return. Even then expecting Trout and Rendon to come back in top form is asking too much. The idea of Arte doing a huge teardown because he is sour grapes over his largest contracts spending the season on the bench seems real to me. So I struggle with the idea of whether the Angels can use this year to make necessary trades and free agency next year to have a respectable team next year. Or should we go into what the Orioles did 5 years ago where they did a complete rebuild from the bottom up. The Orioles pulled off nothing short of magic, where their entire system is A+ on a low payroll. That type of build needs a great architect and I dont know that Minassian alone could do that.

Hey Tony, some of the IL stints can be retroactive to when they first were hurt, so in Siliseth's case, the timing of his rehab starts should line up with the end of his 60-Day stint. As far as Trout, it seems like they might be opting for that short-term solution we talked about on the show today, and who knows if that's the right move or not, especially for Trout's longevity.

Now Trout is injured, also the cutting of Hicks, this is a perfect time to bring back Mariznick. Adell, Ward, and Mariznick should be the daily set outfield lineup, with Moniak as the rotating player. On the closer role. Matt Moore should be considered. Soriano would have been a nice choice, but Silseth's return is a question mark. Sandoval also isn't cutting it as a starter so Soriano is also needed to start.

Not being able to rely on Estevez or some other bullpen guys for back to back outings is a real problem. Some teams get lucky and have a Trevor Hoffman that rolls out day after day. . So we didn't build enough quality depth to allow Estevez to take every other day off or for Matt Moore to only pitch 1 inning every other day. I like our starting rotation except Sandoval. Solid starts for the most part. But we aren't going to get 6 innings of shutout baseball from these guys every week. Patrick you gotta step up right now, you're facing one of the elite pitchers in MLB. Everyone we gotta stay strong, yes we are really hurting and upset but we gotta dig deep and stay positive and enjoy what Angel wins and bright spots we get. Sincerely I can enjoy this season ??? Assorted thoughts: - We all want to see what these young guys are capable of. All offseason long it was "Let the kids play" and "Assess what they got". Barring injury, we're gonna get a very good look at them over the next few months. Very few thought they were gonna be in contention anyway. No expectations, right? - Since the front office emphasized a healthy Trout and Rendon as the centerpieces for a competitive season, does this mean they'll finally drop the charade and call it what it is, a rebuild season? Listening to Angels Radio after the game, that narrative might already be forming (Without saying the dreaded R word, of course). - No disrespect for Trout. The injury sucks. But I'm tired of how its almost an Angels Season of Mourning the instant he's put on the IL. Same thing last August when he and Ohtani were put on the IL together and fans treated it like one of the worst days in franchise history. I long for the days when the season isn't declared over because one player is hurt. - Crowds might be more interesting now. Ohtani fans largely bailed months ago. Perhaps we'll be seeing more O'Hoppe / Neto jerseys in the crowd and less Trout jerseys? As someone who wants the organization to promote the young guys more, perhaps this will force them to do that. On that note, a bittersweet coincidence that Trout's placed on the IL the same day as Logan O'Hoppe bobblehead night.

Even the knee issue? Knew that the hamate bone one was a common golf injury, but didn't realize the mensicus could be too.

I have a migraine. WTH? Another year of this nonsense? Are we the unluckiest team ever?

Luck is a roll of the dice. But good planning and a deep well developed farm system overcomes bad luck. For the Angels it seems we go to the waiver wires. Bringing in Jake Marisnick for Trout makes sense to me and instead they get Kevin Pillar?

Feels like it, Gregory. 😔 By the way, thanks for the kind words while I was out! - Jon

Cut Aaron Hicks & sign Kevin Pillar. Makes total Angels sense.

Trot blows every year. He can now golf all day, again, while collecting 30M plus.

Not doing a lot of golfing from the dugout where he's there supporting his teammates. Sorry he personally took your $30 million you paid him.

Sorry Trout is hurt...he is the angels... but he has been hurt for the last 3 years and now he is going to be out for most of the year... he is not a MVP player anymore and the angels should have traded him before this season started . Now he's untradable.. he reminds me of Fred Lynn who was a great player but was always hurt , this is what Trout is now a player who is always hurt 🤕... and without him the angels are now the worst team with the worst owner.. 100plus losses this year case closed 🔐😢

"And without him the angels are now the worst team with the worst owner." Gotta feeling there's plenty of White Sox fans who would vehemently disagree with that statement

Even before this season Trout's value wasn't that high. He's been injured for the past couple years already, and no team is going to want to take up his large contract.
