I did taekwondo for 6 years, second degree black belt and lots of tournaments. I learned more about self defense in only 6 months of boxing.

Because theres no real sparring. I feel like muay thai and boxing are the only two accessible sports with solid sparring

they go to intricate when fighying is mostly done in patterns not how to defend against 100 different wrist locks

There’s more to a lot of martial arts than just defense and beating people up. That’s like 20% of the actual stuff, a lot is the mind and body and spirit too.

@@stanggang8284 in my opinion Tae Kwan do is very nice for people who later want to do stuff like MMA and want to go to tournaments But kicking in a street fight is never a good idea so yeah unless you are really really good But yeah I don't really recommend kicking in a street fight There are just some martial arts in my opinion that are build for the street fights and some that are build for tournaments

While I definitely get your point, having an attacker act in a specific way is necessary in all marital arts. You won't be able to teach something if your opponent acts randomly. A good system has a lot of options tying into each other and you choose what you dependent on your opponents reaction. But students need to learn the options and for you to demonstrate them your opponent has to act a specific way. The problem with these one minute demos is that they can show only one option. Another problem are people showing stuff that doesn't work at all. Aikido for example isn't meant for fighting but for self enlightenment, so this demo isn't great, especially since it invokes Tyson everyone will assume it's meant for fighting. But to call everyone a fraud that can't show in entire system in a minute would be wrong.

That's only if you take all of the martial arts techniques literally, and don't use your brain to think about how to apply the same principles to different situations. In Martial arts they teach the moves in certain positions just to train the technique in your muscle memory, but those "kata" isn't how you're actually meant to USE the technique you learned. Kata are learning tools, not the actual fighting style.

I agree. Basically Aikido is only the half of an entirely more complex martial discipline. So if you ask that does Aikido can be used in fight, then you should ask to the entire system. Not only the half one.

Except classical japanese sword fighting is rooted in practicality (unlike traditional japanese archery which is very ceremonial). In kendo you wear protection gear for a good reason. Attacks are overhead, stabs and quick slash from the side, one point is generally awarded after just one move. Much like fencing, it's not all fancy shit like in the movies. But also nothing you really need to learn in a dojo. I don't believe it takes years of practice to discover that using the pointy end to find the shortest path into your opponent is the most effective way to go about it.

How useful it is?... Once again, there is a whole group of people who thinks that Aikido practise only defence against one type of attack (wrist grapple). In reality, modern Aikido practise defence technics against almost every single usable attack in a fight, including pushes, punches, kicking, grapples, knife attacks. It never meant to be an attack martial art, but a defensive one the purpose of which either is to help to unleash your sword, if we are talking about samurais, either to break your opponent with one technique, so he would never be able to attack u anymore, if we are looking for a purpose of modern Aikido

Aikido practitioner here. Been attacked by a pitbull-german sheperd crossbreed, saved from pit fights. Didn't try to grab my wrist for sure, the beast was aiming for the throat. After 15 sec the fight was over, the dog pinned to the ground, being choked and getting saved at the last possible by the owner who came to restrain it. I came out with a scratch on the back of my hand. Martial arts don't give you just a set of instructions, they hone your survival instict and make you react in a somewhat coordinate way, that can save your life in a real world scenario.

It only works with segal cause he's already a big guy that's just mostly literally throwing his weight around with his opponents. Making it look like aikido is effective when it's actually not.

The customer instantly dropped to the ground in extreme pain. His fellow work colleague was amazed and asked where he learned that. He told him a couple of days back. Real Japanese aikido , tai jutsu , is brutal and effective. The forms of training are for teaching like using a blunt wooden sword . So many experts with so little knowledge.

That’s not how it works you meatballs. With martial arts you learn every possible grab someone could put you in and eventually after years of training you become invincible basically. In my American kenpo we had one technique where someone grabs you from behind by three of your fingers. At the time we were like, really? But then it dawns on you that they are training you for every possible scenario, til this day I accidentally hurt people all the time when they are horse playing around with me, I break fingers knee rib cages I warn people don’t touch me cause I might inadvertently decapitate you with a series of moves that are built into my reflexes now. This is the idea of it anyway. It works for self defense definitely.

I have been doing Aikido, but thats not what they taught me. They came to us with punches, kicks, knives and throat grabbing and stuff and then we had to quickly do some moves.

Aikido keeps their secrets really well. They don't teach everything to anyone. This martial art is suposed to be used when you lose your sword in a battlefield. Which means you were practically dead. One mugger grabbed me by my ponytail (used to have long hair then) and right wrist, standing behind me, while the other mugger had a knife/cutter against my throat. The one behind me was asking for the money so I told him I had some in my right pocket and he would just say "give it to me..!"...I had to told him "release my hand and I will"; and he did, and I went into my pocket and gave him what would be something around 1 dollar and a half. He was disappointed and would tell his sidekick "ok, go ahead, cut him.." but the other guy said "nah, I won't cut him for 1 dollar.." and they left.

That’s pretty true. They’re probably trying to intimidate or menace you when they grab you like that. Kind of like when people grab you by both collars and try to push you around. It’s usually to both make you look weak and them look strong without actually having to hurt you. That stuff and pushing is the pre fight bravado things that go on.

Nah. I can see a big rapist type of guy trying something like that on a small female to block her from fighting back or trying to get away. That's kinda what big dudes do to keep there little pissed off women , girlfriends or wives from going up side there heads when there argument's gets physical. 😅
