I tried to see can if I could win by decision. I knocked them both out twice in each of the 3 rounds and had them down to their last energy bar on the 3rd round, being very careful not to TKO them or take a single hit from them. And it's still won by decision!

Yeah, Honda and Tyson. Von Kaiser and Great Tiger. Macho Man and Soda Pop. The only one that doesn't have a palette swap is King Hippo. The thing that I notice that really gives the swaps away are the knockdowns, the swaps all get knocked down the same way. And some have very unique body blow knockdowns that really stand out. Haha yeah. I really like his in between rounds profile picture when he is beat up.

Sand man and bull are very obvious because they both do that weird spinning hand movement.

That be down to memory restrictions. For 1987, it looked super advanced for the large sprites and good animation (for the hardware), but the game was only 2 Mbits, meaning it was still heavily limited by the memory it could take in. Phantasy Star was the only other console game to be bigger at the time, at 4 Mbits.

I get it with macho man because you can't earn a belt by decision. (the same reason why you can't beat bald bull 1 and piston Honda 1). But yeah it's weird with king hippo and Mr sandman

King Hippo can't recover after getting knocked down, meaning that trying to get a point to allow you to win by split decision would result in victory. I'm still not sure about Sandman considering he doesn't even have the title in this game.

For the flexing would be perfect if they used the flexing SFX from Honda

Yeah. You can't win a title by decision, or against King Hippo or Mr Sandman.

No. Like 1st Piston Honda, 1st Bald Bull, Mr Sandman and Super Macho Man. Mario will always decide against Mac. As others wrote it is practically impossible to earn a lot of points against King Hippo, since he does not get up when knocked down.
