Here is an on-board video of Mike Whittaker's MW9 Plank in flight, with me at the controls for the first time, at New Farm Piddington. It was a short 15-minute flight to assess the handling. We stopped there because of the gusting crosswind, and we ran out of time, having waited in vain for it to abate.
It flew very well and felt like a normal SSDR, with none of the problems usually associated with flying wings. Directional stability in yaw was good and there was no tendency for it to develop a pilot induced oscillation in pitch. This can happen because the pitch inertia is lower than a conventional layout, and there is no damping from a tailplane on a long moment arm.
Stick fixed stability is good in all axes and there are no vices apparent yet.
More investigation needs to be done once the pitch trim is sorted out. At the moment a constant backforce of around 1 kg (10 Newtons), is needed. We can then investigate stick free stability.
We hope to do that in the next couple of weeks at New Farm again.

Enjoyed flying over the Queen's Isle w/ you. In 1952-1955 I lived in Carterton, about 65 km SW of you, as a child. I started school on the base at RAF Brize Norton and that's probably where I was infected w/ the flying bug. I am 75 now and work as a Flight Instructor in southern Arizona, USA on the Mexican border. Thanks for sharing the flight. Happy landings.

I like the design, it appears to be safe & efficient. I have done two experimental projects, now fly mostly piston twins. I lived near by (Banbury) now at 70FA in Florida. all the best !

Actually I am building an open single seater ultralight that will weigh 70 kg, with wings inspired by this MW9, high wing with struts, Faubel profile, and Polini Thor 202 engine 32 hp. It will be very easy to assemble and disassemble and take it home in a trailer

Very good. Interesting and a lovely sounding engine. Im frankly amazed at the low HP!! My own S7 requires 80 of the beasts!

Fascinating aeroplane, would like to hear more about it. Hopefully some plans will become available in the fulness of time.

I'd love to fly that to see how it compares to a Mitchell Wing. I started with a B-10 and before I got it flying I found a Mitchell A-10 that was in need of work from a trailer accident. The previous owner had set the altitude record in it! I flew that for awhile and traded it at the missile silo factory in Kansas for a two seater T-10 Mitchell Wing. I never felt it was pitch sensitive but you could move it up and down just by leaning ahead and back again in the seat. I had bungee cords on all of them to trim them in flight and it took pressure off the stick too. The single seat had individual rudder controls. You could push one to turn or push them both to create more drag and drop you into a shorter field. They are not short field wings as they like to float forever in ground effect.

Mike Whittaker has this uncanny knack of designing some groundbreaking aircraft a bit like Rutan....both geniuses in their own right. What's the powerplant for the plank?

Very Impressive Video😊Looks like you had Fun in it........Flying Wings are a Black Art to me...... As I am sure you know I am the Custodian of a Scottish Built Flying Wing ( kept in Cornwall ) that should have flown by now, but so far seems to be a " Non " Flying Wing !!!!!!

Really interesting to see this and to hear your thoughts on it. It seems Mr Whittaker has done a great job of designing out some of the more 'undesirable' characteristics of a flying wing. Great stuff.

Very nice. I used to own and fly a Long EZ, but had to sell due to lack of time and difficulties with operating from grass runways. Can you share some details on the performance? Thanks!

look relative similar to a Fauvel Flying wing: i known in France a Fauvel AV36 glider who was converted to ultralight motor glider with a small 4 stroke engine and a foldable propeller...

Sorry, but this is the most boring flight video I've ever seen. Only this one view, no glance to the right or left wing. No ground-view to show how its looking in the air? Really? Sad...
