Performed by the BBC Phiharmonic orchestra.
The Second Spanish overture, also known as "Souvenir d'une nuit d'été à Madrid" and "Recuerdos de Castilla" is, as its name suggests, the second orchestral work that Glinka composed as a result of his trip to Spain, the first being the Jota Aragonesa ( • Glinka - Spanish Overt... ) (also transcribed for piano by Balakirev: • Mikhail Glinka - Jota ... you can read more about Glinka’s experience in Spain in the description of that video).
The main difference between these two is that in the first one Glinka focuses on a single theme -the Jota-, while this one is a compilation of several different memories that he had collected mainly while staying in the Spanish capital (. According to James Parakilas, music scholar at Cornell University, it seems that Glinka intended the first one to be played in Spain, for Spain, while this one could’ve been composed as a way to share Spanish music and Mikhail’s own experiences in Spain with non-Spanish audiences.
