But what with appliances without usb or sd card ports? Is there any possibility to attach external storage for containers e.g. iscsi?

Hi! Unfortunately it only works on hardware with USB port. Internal flash has limited space and durability. I would recommend RB5009 as it makes a great home router (not only due to performance but also due to USB3.0 port).
