This beauty visited us to be used in the movie "Die Hard 5". Airline: Belarus - Ministry for Emergency Situations (MChS) Type: Mil Mi-26T Halo Reg.: EW-260TF Date: 2012.06.22.
absolutely massive! The guy walking on the fuselage and the ladder leading up to the cockpit!I saw one of these monsters at the airport in Lima Peru. It dwarfed the Mi-8s sitting near it!if only we built more and destroyed less. They should use those to drop food and books on people.
When a helicopter tail rotor size matches the main rotor size of normal every day helicopters you have to get a more elevated heart rate at the thought of flying such a beast!
I love this helicopter. It has such an ergonomic and aesthetically beautiful shape. It looks like a well cut woman with a perfect athletic body. Like dolphins look as they're born as masters of water world, this one looks as it's been born to strike the skies. Gives a feeling of calm balanced yet extreme power and safety
Well, yes, she's beautiful, with regards to her shapes. Not so much robust, though - sometimes they collapse like card castles or loose their tail booms as a result of hard landings. They tried to make this chopper as light as possible, to increase its lifting capabilities - but finally came to structural weakness.
The MI-26 is just incredible. Amazing to see a huge machine like that in hover. Were those ferry fuel tank? how far away did this machine come from? I hope it is in the movie in some amazing stunts... MI-26 is IMHO the greatest achievement in rotor craft technology. The main rotor is just an unbelievable engineering marvel.
Huge monster! After watching videos and seeing pictures of this monste in the pastr, I just realized it doesn't have chin bubbles. Although the cabin crewmembers would help, I would have a hard time doing a precision hover without to chin bubble windows to look down out of, though with a beeper trim would be easier. Yes, the BO-105 looks like an RC model next to this monster. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
It's much bigger. The cargo compartment is pretty much the same size as the one on a legacy Hercules, and so are the lifting capabilities in general. Think of it as a Hercules with rotors instead of wings and you're pretty much spot-on. It's been known to lift almost 230 skydivers to a few kilometers, and been known to fly up to almost 7 km with smaller loads. Yeah, the specs say it can't do that, but it did. Also, it's still in production.
If I may add, this thing is longer than a 737-800 (39.5m) and it's tail rotor is the same size a MD500 main rotor. And the third turboshaft we see is the APU. It's cargo capacity is about the same as a C130.
Very impressive and truly beautiful aircraft! Many thanks for posting this well done video without shaking and noisy music. The rotor sound is a great music!
The most beautiful helicopter I had ever seen. Unfortunately the last one here in my country has been retired from service and maybe it will be on permanent display at the Air Force Museum. Greetings from MEXICO.
What a beautiful aircraft! I think that the Belarussian pilot was showing off a bit. They are not that difficult to land. Very impressive. I never get tired of seeing it fly.
It's got to be the most dangerous heli to operate, easily. Just look at how slowly and carefully they land and take off in those things. Gotta take your time with all 50 plus tons of it. Probably only the most skilled pilots are allowed to fly them. Gotta set down as gently as possible. Otherwise the undercarriage would just collapse. Even after the rear wheels are down the pilot still has to lower the nose wheel gingerly.
From a distance you think, "It's just another basic chopper" but one you get there and see a fully grown man walk on the tail you think, "Damn it takes after it's little behemoth helicopter the Mi 24 'Hind"
Boss: BOIS we gonna rob a Bank today Crew: That sound cool. So what the plan Boss Boss: It simple just tow the bank and all done Crew: Err... with what boss Boss: With THIS (Mi-26)
Mi-26 is basically a helicopter variant of the C-130 Hercules... it's the same size and lifts the same. :p The rotor diameter is partly explained by the Chinook have 2 rotors, naturally.
No, the Mi-12 was larger both in rotor diameter and height (and probably a bunch of other aspects, too). But Mi-12s don't fly anymore, while these beauties do :)
Almost as big as the main rotor of the R22! 2" counts. Ask any woman!! Amazing that the blades on the tail rotor, all five, can be that long and tolerate all those forces. Must be "sucking" a lot of HP too for no lift.
Michael User Not a NOTAR. NOTAR is no tail rotor, uses a ducted fan for directional control. There IS a tail rotor on that one. None the less, impressive bird!
