40:1 Is about the battle of Wizna and is also known as the Polish Thermopylae. Where 720 Polish soldiers, many recruited the month before, held off an army of 42,000 Germans for three days before being overrun. According to wikipedia of the 720 soldiers around 15 escaped about the same number were captured and the rest were killed. The captian killed himself with a grenade before he could be captured. Don't know if anyone else posted this but I thought it was amazing I had never heard of this battle before Sabaton

Sabaton is all about history. The good and the bad, no filters only the facts. I can suggest Hearts of Iron, Night Witches, Winged Hussars, Shiroyama, Stalingrad, to Hell and Back, The Lost Battalion, The Last Stand, and the Last Battle. They are my favorite.

Resist and bite is a surprisingly underrated gem in their line up, also love Primo Victoria, Panzer battalion, screaming eagles, final solution, no bullets fly, inmate 4859, and so many more, they cover so many conflicts and are always respectful to all sides. One song that truly encapsulates their pledge to never glorify war is the song: lifetime at war, it has a very somber tone and really hits home the tragedy that is warfare

One of the more important information about the Bismarck is, that the Royal Navy pretty much sent an entire fleet after her. Royal Navy sent after her : 1 battleship 1 battlecruiser 2 heavy cruisers Did not participate in combat: 6 destroyers against the German Heavy Battle Cruiser Prinz Eugen and the Battleship Bismarck. They fired around 2800~ shells at her as of which 300 Hit her, and only 4 of those 300 managed to penetrate the ships deck and general Armor (most of the shells came from the King George V with her 5.25 Inch Main Guns) (I know im late, maybe someone cares !)

Thanks for saluting those of us who served. We really do appreciate that stuff man. After knowing our former brothers and sisters were spit on because of the misunderstanding between civilian perception, and what we actually sign up for it’s a welcome thing to hear. Trust that we understand your hatred for what the governments do, but the vast majority do not sign up to just do the governments biddings. We really do sign up for the betterment of the country and the world, but when we get in we see that we are powerless to make the changes we want to see. It’s just follow orders, or be punished from that point on. Those who have served understand the hate the civilian population have for the government which they carry on towards the military because they think we are just brainwashed zombies doing the governments biddings. Trust me we are far from that. Cheers my brother.

The Bismarck was a powerful and terrifying ship. Story has it that the Bismarck opened fire on the RMS Hood from 15 Miles away. RMS Hood exploded into pieces and sank to the bottom. People speculate that the shell that hit RMS Hood hit the Ammo Magazine and that it could only have came from the Bismarck. If I recall Churchill mobilized every ship in the British Royal Navy to find and sink the Bismarck after it sunk the RMS Hood. Johnny Horton also has an old time song called "Sink The Bismarck" that tells a little more than Sabaton's version does.

Several thing, so grab some popcorn for this novel- If you want some war history stuff, look up The Battle off Samar. It was a naval battle between Japan and America in WWII and one of the most one-sided match ups in history. The US had 3 destroyers, 4 destroyer escorts (think destroyer but smaller) and 6 escort carriers (tiny carriers made for light support) and the Japanese had 4 battleships, 6 heavy cruisers, 2 light cruisers, and 11 destroyers. Japan also had the Yamato, the largest battleship ever constructed which outweighed Taffy-3 by itself. Japan should have brought more ships... they lost. The documentaries are about an hour long, so you might not want to do a full reaction. Although this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SuSd5TfFOJk.html is a summary of sorts by Potential History. A fun quote that was said by an American sailor during the battle while their ship was held together by tape was "just wait a little longer, boys, we're suckering them into 40-mm range" Another thing I can recommend would just be anything about the USS Enterprise CV-6. She was known as "The Grey Ghost" because she would not die. For a time, she was the only US carrier in the Pacific, prompting the sailors to post the sign "Enterprise vs Japan" on her deck. As for Sabaton, this is going to be fun: Panzerkampf- Largest tank battle in history, USSR vs Nazi-Germany Midway- About the battle of Midway Wolfpack- German submarines vs a convoy Resist and Bite- 40 Belgium soldiers vs Germany Hearts of Iron- German Soldiers evacuate civilians from the Russians Rorkes Drift- About 150 British vs 5000 Zulu warriors Firestorm- Bombers in general Counterstrike- The Six-Day War Shiroyama- The final battle of the Samurai Night Witches- Soviet all female bomber regiment White Death- The deadliest sniper in history, 500+ kills in 100 days The Price of a Mile- WWI, asking the question of how much is a mile of ground worth Cliffs of Gallipoli- The lyrics "Only boys who lost their lives in the sand" make it stand out to me To Hell and Back- Audie Murphy, most decorated US soldier in history and his struggle with PTSD Wehrmacht- About the German war machine Rise of Evil- Hitler's rise to power Attero Dominatus- The Battle of Berlin Back in Control- Battle of the Falkland Islands Nuclear Attack- The nuclear strikes on Japan Carolus Rex- King of Sweden who ruled a good chunk of Europe If you want a song, I can provide a link to either a lyric video or music video. There's also a ton of other songs they have. I can give info as needed, but feel free to react to whatever you like

Don't forget; *Carolean's Prayer* - The faith that the Swedish Soldiers had in their King, Carolus Rex *The Lost Battalion* - The Liberty Division, trapped behind enemy lines during WW1. Bombarded by both their foes and allies (by mistake), their supplies dropped on their foes, as well. *The Red Baron* - Manfred von Richthofen. One of the absolute greatest pilots of all time. In total, he shot down 80 Allied Aircraft before his death, in which he was treated with great respect. *The Last Stand* - Swiss Guards, during the Sacking of The Holy See/The Vatican, holding off an army of thousands as just under 200 soldiers. Because of their sacrifice, there is still a Swiss Guard at the Vatican, dressed and armed precisely like those that came before them. *Winged Hussars* - Polish Heavy Cavalry, whom, with their King at the helm, in one great charge, finally helped to free Vienna from the Ottoman Empire, preventing Europe from being conquered. Often marked as the downturn point in the Empire's history, leading to its eventual collapse. *No Bullets Fly* - The odd encounter of a German flying Ace in WW2 and an American Bomber crew whom he chose to spare. The pilot later met one of the men from that same bomber, in the early 2000s. Bloody fantastic thing to watch, honestly. *The Lion from the North* - Both a Swedish and English version. Both are brilliant. Fans can debate all they like on which is better. I like both. The song is, again, about Carolus Rex/King Karl, and his fight against Catholicism. *Primo Victoria* - The Normandy Landings, or D-Day.

Don't forget "Soldier of Three Armies", about Lauri Törni, who started out fighting in the Finnish Army against the Soviet Union, then ended up in the German Army as Germany was collapsing in the final days of WW2 (he had been sent to Germany to train as a guerilla, in case the Soviet Union invaded Finland again), THEN ended up making his way to the US, where he joined the US Army Special Forces, serving for 11 years, until dying in a helicopter crash in the mountains of Vietnam in 1965. They didn't find his remains until 1999; he was formally identified in 2003, and is now buried at Arlington National Cemetery. And thank you. Your thoughts and respect are appreciated.

Hey there. As a swede, I'm VERY glad to see that you, like som any others, have come to appreciate Sabaton. The way they make Power Metal while telling history is really AWESOME! And as for the battleship Bismarck, I think it would be interesting to see what you have to say about the guy the ship was named after. You really don't need to look much further than watching the videos made by the RU-vid channel Extra Credit. Just look for their videos about Otto von Bismarck, you WON'T be disappointed. Seriously... The IRON CHANCELLOR!

I have taken a tour of the USS Turner Joy, a 1950s era destroyer that now serves as a museum ship. A puny thing compared to the larger battleships but even such a "modest" warship was positively daunting in its size and complexity. Steel so thick it feels like you're knocking on stone. It felt unshakable, its hull impenetrable. But a beast like Bismarck could have turned it to twisted slag in a single volley. Awesome.

For the record, that's a 15in diamater shell from one of eight main guns. The projectile weighed 1764 lbs each with a muzzle velocity of over 2600 feet per second and a range over 20 miles so, imagine something half the weight of a car traveling 1/2 a mile per second slamming into your ship. This is what killed HMS Hood.

I have been on a cruiser once before, and the ship i was one had 6 gun batteries. Each battery had 3 cannons, and each cannon barrel had an inner diameter of alteast 30 inches wide. they said that whenever a full broadside was fired that they could feel the ship shift 50 yards sideways from the sheer recoil of the guns. Ships like the Bismarck are insanely powerful.

Back in 06' when I was an army cadet I got to do a tour of the HMCS Calgary (I think) while it was getting refitted at the navy base on Vancouver Island. It was the first time I was ever on a ship or boat that didn't feel like a ramshackle tin and wood box that could sink and kill all of us at any moment. You're right about how wild it is that they float. They're like steel skyscrapers laying flat in the water and forgetting to sink.

The Bismarck was a German battleship. One of the biggest in ww2. The allies put Killing that ship as a #1 priority. They threw everything at finding, and sinking it. Battleships were expensive and we're rarely used, but they we're good deterants at ports since the dam things were hard to sink. Plus losing one would be like loosing a carrier today. Japan made a bigger one called the Yamato.

There you can get much history about war. The USS Iowa is in the port of Los Angeles San Pedro, CA and it’s a proper WWII battleship that saw service in that war, the Korean War, and Cold War. It was decommissioned and made into a museum for the pacific battle fleet I believe. The USS Missouri is a museum as well but I forget where. They are amazing to see and worth a visit. The USS Constitution “Old Ironsides” from the late 18th and early 19th century is still an active ship with sailors stationed on it largely to provide guided tours and it does go to sea for short trips yearly out of Boston harbor.

About your repeated and justified question, "how do you go on after experiencing the horror of war?", life goes on and the answer is surprisingly simple (and perhaps simplistic or, some might say, simpleton); you go on as best you can! PTSD, or "shell shock" as I prefer to call it, affects people in different ways, different people that is. Some recover enough to lead "normal" lives, some don't. ALL carry the wounds and they never heal 100% but many heal enough to carry on. Bismarck, the ship, was the embodiment of the saying "pride before the fall". Germany thought they could rule the waves, like the British had for 2-3 centuries before, just by building the best ship in the world. It takes more than just ships, it takes generations afloat in the seas to understand you cannot rule them, you can just sail while they permit you to do so. I have nothing but respect for the Poles as a nation and especially for the Polish soldiers. They were totally fearless in WW2, prime example the final assault on Monte Cassino in Italy, they paid the heaviest price in that battle but took the castle and ended the German resistence there. But my respect goes far longer than just that, it goes back to the Siege of Vienna by the Ottomans, when ALL of Europe was staring at the gaping maw of dehumanization (a.k.a. Ottoman occupation) and the Winged Hussars (another GREAT song by Sabaton, btw) arrived and saved the day, the city AND the continent! If the Battle of Marathon is considered the most important in the history of the British Empire (google it, it IS!), then the charge of the Polish Hussars must be the most significant moment in the history of modern Europe. I have little to say about "Coat of Arms", I am Greek and I can say they NAILED IT! thanks to them for making the songs and to you for your reactions. Keep it up!

Fun story about the concert they filmed this video during. Before the band played, the Cardinal (iirc) if the Polish Catholic Dioceses, presented the Band a Sword and gave them a Honorary (basically a title). The band had no idea why several guys from the polish state department and an old priest where even there. 40:1 is considered to be Military Anthem in Poland, much as the song Smoking Snakes has become in Brazil. Think about that, a band made a short song about an often forgotten battle, and it becomes a cultural icon to the people of that nation. It seems odd to most people, but there is something to remember about Poland. They weren’t just invaded by the Nazis. They where betrayed by the Allies, left in Soviet hands for decades. When I was born, Poland was still occupied and there was a polish resistance fighting to be free. Any Pol in their mid thirties today, was born in occupation. For them, the War started in 1939 but it didn’t end until they got their freedom back, near fifty years later.

the bismarck was the flagship of the kriegsmarine. only two ships were developed in the bismarck class, the bismarck and the tirpitz. the bismarck took on the two strongest ships in the british navy when those ships took the bismarck and its escort by surprise. the bismarck got away with slight damage to the fuel tanks, and both rudders jammed, sinking one of the ships and badly damaging the other. soon after, 2/3s of the british navy attacked it, hitting it with dozens of torpedo bombs and over 400 heavy shells from dedicated ship killing battleships, and despite the overwhelming odds, the bismarck toughed it out, sinking and damaging numerous ships, before the crew decided to scuttle it, because it was out of ammunition and was seriously damaged. its sister, the Tirpitz, didnt meet so nice a fate. when the british discovered it stuck in norwegian fjords, they immediately sent out a bomber wing and hit it with 4 "tall boy" bombs and 10 40 pound bunker busters, for a total of 5,200 pounds worth of explosives, the largest amount of explosives ever air dropped onto a naval vessel
