I definitely used the M4A1 I was issued as a template for my AR build. However, I added improvements where I could. I wanted a patrol rifle that was better than average, but not super tacked out. Still love it and I wish I could use it when I was active duty.

Army did away with three round burst and went back to full auto, they added ambidextrous selector switch as well... Had the armor take that off. At least that's how it happened in the 10th mountain division👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
The Army as a whole from what I know has done the mod to all the now M4A1s. I'm an 11B in the Kansas Army NG and all of the M4s were converted to full auto and have the ambi selector.

I use forward assists all the time. Not for jams, of course, but it's a wonderful way to load the chamber quietly. Ride the handle forward and press the button. Ready to go without the Clickity-clack.
This would only work on a bolt thats never been fired before. In my experience, once the bolt has a little wear on it, it slides right into the extension without resistance. I'd say the only way to quietly load an AR, is to have it already loaded before whatever engagement. Also you're really not supposed to ride the slide as you load it, you pull the charging handle back and let it go.
@@xxwhodabeanerxx69 Interesting. Although my decision has more to do with muzzle velocity and bullet stability than the burst vs full auto setting. The M4's 14.5 inch barrel gets the 62 grain bullet out to about 2,900 feet per second, but the M16's 20 inch barrel will push a 62 grain bullet out at about 3,200 feet per second.
The m4a1 that was issued to me in bct was almost silver with the amount of abuse it had taken in the past. Could wiggle the upper and lower receiver and see daylight on the other side and almost read a sentence through it. Never jammed on me and got me through bct so I’m thankful for good ol Shiny.
Clear this up for me. I have heard that in order to keep sound down while racking a round, you can use the forward assist to push a round in. IDK. obviously in rare situations.
@@scottshoe842 no you cant. The forward assist will not work that way. If you want to silently charge the ar15 platform you're gonna have to slowly pull back the charging handle and then very slowly let it forward while still holding the charging handle.

@@emmanuelkotei649 national firearms act there were 2 the NFA1934 which established the machine gun registry and required short barreled rifles and shotguns to have a permit associated with them to be legal and established the BATF (Bureau of Alcohol Tabacco and Firerams). Then you have the GCA1986 (gun control act) which closed the machine gun registry thus making newly manufactured machine guns illegal.
@@Lado909 it's not a person or organization, lol it's a law that irritates the hell out of those of us who understand that the 2nd amendment is designed for people to fight tyranny, because the GCA1986 prevents the ownership of machine guns unless they are registered on the NFA 1934 registry which has been closed since 1986.
Lot of people don’t use forward assist. I find myself using it often when I needed to chamber a round silently and slowly let the bolt pickup the round into the chamber and a little tap on the assist to fully close the bolt.
Appreciate the no BS assessment. As an Aussie we aren't allowed anything that serious here, so it's fun to watch YT channels to get the fix and some tech on why the M4/AR15 platform is so respected and such a great firearm. As someone in the Military are you allowed to customise your weapon in any way? I'm thinking more beyond filing grips... More toward changing triggers, butt stocks , fore grips etc?? @@anemu3819 I find that the people complaining the most about being taxed are lower class that actually receive more $$ than they pay in or are hardly taxed at all. The states do most of the taxing.
I can say for myself that I also thought the forward assist was useless until I actually first used it in a war. And I used it a LOT. Basically, it's for when you don't want the enemy to know you're there so you want to load your weapon quietly.

You'll spend 21 weeks at osut, 2-4 days a month at your unit, and 14-21 days during the summer doing training, and if your in an armored brigade, in your 5 years in the guard, you'll end up spending 9 months in kuwait. You'd be suprised but even being away during a weekend, she'll be thinking about being with that co- worker she finds nice. A story old as time its self. I saw so many divorces in my time in the army. You'll be a statistic.

I am actually very fond of the base M4. I used to think that milspec could never compare to well-built civilian AR's, but after 4.5 years as an Infantryman, I actually prefer the base style M4, even including the A2 handgrip lol
When I was in the Marines the M4s were only for females and officers, we also put tape over the fiber optic on the RCO because it was always too bright 😂

I've actually used the forward assist twice at the range when I was in the Marines. It was the same day with the same rifle. It wasn't going into battery. The forward assist seated it right. Still a malfunction you can clear other ways though. Probably just a wonky rifle that was near the end of it's useful life. Lord knows those M16A4s have been heavily used and abused.

First time down range I could use my own vertical grip, light, and sling. Second time I was able to also swap out the grip and butt stock but I had to have it back to it's original configuration when I turned it back in.
The 14.5 comes from the derivative m16a1 Carbine, this was because the xm177s and gau 5s were too loud for indoor use, and to slow the cyclic rate and increase dwell time (all helping reliability) 14.5 was picked for that application. The moderator was used for all of these models and the baffles used to fill up and need replacing. Nowadays SBRs guys are using suppressors, this increases pressures in the gas system. To offset that the rifle should have a nitride or inconel gas tube, proper gas port, and bolt replacement every 6k rounds to ensure proper chambering and extraction. If you think an external piston is better for you, they are much cleaner, then get one. But if you’re going to use the AR-15 it’s best you learn the systems history before trying to modify it.
I have 1 M4 clone that is identical to my last issued weapon, just because. I have several others that are built based on whatever I felt like at the time. You hit the nail on the head, if you don't train it doesn't matter what you have- bare bones or Gucci.
Sweet guys. Our Police dept. Here in Wisconsin used the M 1 Carbine from 1970 to 1990. They adopted the AR 15 carbine. Then in 2005 we switched to the M 4 Carbines. I was in the Marines back in 1987-1991. I used the M14 in basic and the M16A2. I carried my M 14 308 after recon and sniper school. I switched to the bolt action Remington 300 magnum. For over a mile shots. I bought a M 4 Carbines with my Cop I'd! I love it! GREAT SHOW SEMPER FI MARINE.
As an army special ops veteran you are right i have one of my ARs built like my m4 also looking for an M16 which is what i was issued in the beginning. Those Knights Armament quad rails cost a bit. The Picatinny standard reduces the logistics of carrying different mounts and adapters for the rifleman.... just not worth it to have to spend the money to change everyone over to mlock, then have to change all the mounts for the IR illuminators, M203s etc. As much as I'd love a free-floated mlok handguard if I was still in, if the world became a madmax apocalpse, you'd probably be better off with the quadrail....I'd pick the your MK 18 over the more Gucci stuff. I keep an old quad rail clone for this reason in my collection... That and nostalgia... I still think the corps should do initial marksmanship training with the irons even though I also used both while I was in.
Forward assist is necessary. You shouldn’t be using it to slam stuck rounds or bolts into place. When quietly charging the weapon, tapping the forward assist ensures the bolt is locked in. I’ve used other grips and finally decided to try the A2 grip I’d always just discarded. It’s now my favorite out of all the grips I’ve used.
I'm former U.S.M.C. 1978 to 1982, my rifle was the M16 A1. I love that rifle; my personal rifle is a PSA freedom AR15, 16" barrel government profile 1&7 twist, free float hand rail with Mag pul furniture. I like it, but I would rather have my old M16 A1. I'm sure you understand why. God bless.
The bottom line is they both will do what there made to do. Mine is just a simple smith n Wesson sport 2 carbine. All I have on mine is a good light and I like the old school carry handle on it.
just bought one today. I was in the army and i'm to lazy nor do I know all that much about building guns. I just bought that I ordered an acog scope online today and that's it. I'm going to go shoot with it tomorrow and get it all zeroed in.

I love that PWS MK111 Mod 2. I was ready to pull the trigger of a Colt M4 SOCOM, but instead I went with a PWS MK111 pro upper & Aero M4E1 registered SBR lower. It was actually cheaper and superior to the Colt M4.

I prefer my Block II Clone over my Gucci AR, i plan on doing a MK18, M16A4, and standard M4A1 clone builds, looking forward to running and gunning with all those.
When I was in 1990 to 1994 we were finally Issued the M-16 A2’s for training before we went to Iraq. I have not built a version of that rifle. I have the custom version of the M4 with 16 1/2 inch barrel and 2 20” barrel. Cannot afford a real a card and the clones suck. I’m running Primary Arms optics 1 to 6 and the 1 to 8. For one of my 20 inch barrel A.R.‘s I’m using and ATN Night vision scope he 600 series. And the other 20 inch barrel has a Primary Arms for the 14 x 44 long range optic. It also has a Bargarra custom target barrel.
Kyle Rittenhouse used his ar15 in a combat situation and DID have to use his forward assist, potentiallt saving his life. I'll keep mine thank you very much.
Personally I think a informational video like this should have expanded on cyclic rate of fire and stuff like that in a VS type of video. The fact that an m4 can fire 700+ rounds per minute vs how fast you can pull a trigger consistently is a huge bargaining chip when talking about what's better. Not to mention you could take all of those parts off the fancy AR when you go to a warzone and just install them on you issued m4 until you have to turn it back into the armory.
I was in the infantry and went to basic training in 2007 at Fort Benning. We had two phases of marksmanship that we had to go through. The first was called BRM and it was Basic Rifle Marksmanship when we used iron sights only and had to qualify that way. After we trained with them we moved into ARM Advanced Rifle Marksmanship. That's when we used red dot sights ( no ACOG) it was still fundamental. People think we get great equipment right out of the box and it is not true we had the M16A4 so it was a great weapon to shoot and very accurate.
id say they should do a conversion on all the m16 an m4 better stocks an pistol grip an free floated rail m16 would be nice looking. of course have flip up battle sights . but i wouldn't mind keeping the sight post an still be free floated qaud rail
I was a Marine grunt and in 2004 we were deployed to Afghan. My favorite part was when I saw the US Army guards with full auto M4s and Aimpoints -- in Turkey. I was issued an M16A4 (20" barrel) with iron sight carry handles in Asadabad or whatever it's called.
