When you're 18 or so you're not thinking pension, but at 60 I can look back and give some fact based on my experience. I joined as a junior soldier at 16 as an Apprentice supply specialist and after 6 years I applied for pilot training. I finished after 24 years as a WO1 pilot, got a job straight away as a police pilot on a very good salary and an immediate pension from the Army. At 55 years of age the Army pension was index linked and I'm now receiving a pension from the police as well. Once you're in the Army you can apply for many specialist roles that attract extra pay and qualifications, choose wisely and you'll be set for life.

Hi Craig, worth noting that the pay rise from recruit to private (or equivalent) is also timegated behind a 26 week length of service, calculated from day 1 of basic. So if phase 1 takes 12/14/16 weeks (dependant on how covid affected it) you will still be looking at roughly another 2/3 months before that pay rise comes through. Eagerly awaiting mine as a fresh craftsman at Lyneham. Love the content, keep up the good work. It's appreciated by many.

I served for 13 years, 2 tours of afghan, 1 of kosovo and 1 of northern ireland, lost many muckers in afghan and have a lifetime of vile memories ahead and as a corporal I earned just over a grand and half a month, a footballer kicks a ball around for 90 minutes a week and has probably the same length of professional career 13-15 years and gets paid 100 grand plus a week, it's wrong in every way, just like nurses, firefighters, coppers etc the forces are massively underpaid! It's discusting.

Sadly, that's all revenue generated from TV adverts. It's an obscene amount of money that businesses pay, and of course, athletes want their share. All because sports fans are a target audience. I, too, served for 20 years. Follow the money, life is so unfair. That some lout in a chair is worth more attention than the salt of the earth heroes you mention.

I've been in 12 years as a sgt in a sup 3 trade (rmp sib) and I take home £40500, which is £2600 a month take home after tax. With automatic promotion to Cpl as RMP then automatic promotion to sgt as SIB, if you're clever you can get to this pay after 6 years. Without a degree that's pretty decent.

People saying the pays not good? Firstly, when you look at all the benefits like minimum bills, discounts etc the army provides a pretty decent take home in comparison to someone who will be spending half their wages on rent and bills. Secondly, a lot of young people dont know what they want from life and or want to develop as a person. The army provides these experiences and opportunities to build your self into a confident and educated person. Personally I wouldn’t last long in a boring repetitive work environment for very long even if it pays a pretty penny. At 23 I’ve done all the shit young ppl do and I’ve worked in all kinds of jobs, got no education but the truth is if I don’t make somthing of myself I will be stuck in a dead end boring job living in a depressing existence.

I just finished watching your video and blown away by the pay difference between the Uk and Australian Army. for Comparison UK CPL is £35,285 or $67246.05 AUD. Our CPL's immediately after promotion are on $79,193 or £41553.74 with a pay increase every year base on skill and time served. The ADF also contributes 16.5% of our salary into our superannuation (Retirement fund).

Get rid of football, seeing how much money gets wasted by kicking a football around the pitch. The Army needs the billions of pounds that's sapped every single year by Lords and MPs in the political establishment as well as football. All soldiers and officers should all be given a 10% pay increase for each and every single year of service.

@@CombatReadyHQ Hi Craig, Thanks for getting back. Back in 61 there was no agreement in place and full service up to 9 years had to be served to get the pension. As I said I had to leave for compassionate reasons. My father died leaving my mother on her own who had a nervous breakdown. They made me pay for several equipment courses I had taken locally. I seem to remember it was a nominal sum of £50 and I also had to pay for my transportation back home in the UK. I was cleaned out. Not happy memories.

The comradeship, adventure and serving the country I loved was my reason and I have no regrets. Looking back would I have changed anything? No, not at all. If you are thinking of joining the military simply as a way to earn a wage packet then I advise you to look somewhere else.

If you are serving and a new scheme comes in, you may have the option to stay on your existing scheme and, even if not, you will have preserved rights covering your service to the date of changeover. Gosh! Even a WO1 Supp 4 top of the tree doesn't earn much. £54,262 isn't a massive amount in this day and age against things like housing prices.
@jasoncrabtree143
@jasoncrabtree143 3 года назад
Considering the average wage in this country (including London) is 30,000, a WO1 earns almost double. Add in the fact they have free dental, an extra 10 days leave, free accommodation (for over 37 year olds) or subsidised housing (my 2 bedroom military house is £170 a month compared to a local average of £700 a month), not to mention other income such as LSA (money earned per day on exercise or operation), it's a wealth 95% of the population will never achieve. Even a lowly Cpl earning £35,000 is bringing home an income after tax better than 75% of the population.

Good drills mate,however you keep going on about wat64d(apache) to you can't go in as a direct entrant,you seem to have missed food charges,send taxes,missed out messbills and functions,mess dress and associated Costs,leave isn't guaranteed its a privilege,and your details on pay bands are way off the mark can't compare a infantry soldier to a Blackie or greenie if you know what they are and an infantry cam is on much less than a smig,as a gun bunny please tell it as it is or not all ,thanks plank

Is it your own accommodation/room or is it shared?
@phoebus007
@phoebus007 3 года назад
That will depend on a number of factors including rank, location, unit role, operational deployment. Recruits will generally share with 5 - 7 others and then with 2 or 3 as a junior soldier. Corporals upwards will normally have their own rooms, the SNCOs in the sergeants' mess. Officer cadets at Sandhurst share with one other, but officers generally have their own rooms in the officers' mess. Of course, all this changes when units are deployed for training or on operations.

I'm surprised that a sargent major gets paid about the same as a captain. I thought a captain would be senior. How do their responsibilities compare?
@markcollins2666
@markcollins2666 3 года назад
The base pay appears the same, but factor in years of service rises, and the Sergeant Major could well make more than an actual Major. The Sergeant Major has far more administrative responsibilities, but is desk bound. His days of running and gunning are over
@briant5685
@briant5685 2 года назад
for one to become a sergent major he or she must have served for several years but a captain is a relatively newly commissioned officer so the years of service also plays a role in salaries, you will find warrant officer earning more than some commissioned officer
@gerardburton1081
@gerardburton1081 2 года назад
If you join as a 2nd Lt then you can be a captain in 5 years. A Sgt Major is going to take 20 years to get there. Hence the better pay for a Sgt Major. Very very few enlisted are going to make as a Sgt and even fewer make it to Sgt Major.

@xavier01110
@xavier01110 2 года назад
@@briant5685 Because there are just far better career choices for people with degrees. A degree puts you in debt and takes a few years to get so why would you then choose to go into a job that doesn't even require a degree. It's certainly a respectable and admirable decision to make but it's damn foolish. The army isn't an easy life and the pay isn't great when you consider the line of work you're in. You could get a far easier and higher paid job if you have a degree. Being an Officer in the British army only makes sense if you're rich and bored out of your mind or if you have just finished college or A levels but aren't interested in going to Uni or getting an apprenticeship. Do what you want mate but joining the army after going to uni means you've put yourself into unnecessary debt and wasted 4 years of your life.
