Don't throw cash into your TSP, their funds are terrible. Put after tax money into a ROTH IRA. Use Vanguard, Edward Jones, etc to invest - from a former E-5 now making 6 figures.

When I joined the air force, my first assignment was in a small air station in Germany which was located in the Ardennes Forest were the Battle of the Bulge took place. Didn't have a car for three years but saved a lot of money to tour all over Europe. The large air base located one hour south of us had a lot of tours all over Europe. When I mean tours I'm not talking about military tours. I'm talking about tour buses for tourist. In all I've been to many places than the people in that air station that I've worked with who are married, living off base paying rent, gas and vehicle maintenance. While the single guys wasting their money on alcohol and partying a lot and getting drunk all the time since they never cart you in Germany even if your under 18 years of age. It was my best assignment of my entire 20 year career. The funny thing is that my brother, a retired CPO, told me not to join the Navy but the air force. Thank god for that suggestion.

I'm an old Airman too. I started getting into photography about 8 years ago. I wish, instead of the car and tv, I would have started that when I was a young Airman. If I could do it over, I would not buy the car and tv, but an SLR camera and taken classes. Back then, it was on film and we didn't have RU-vid to learn from. Also, I also wanted a pilot's license, which I took one lesson but my car payment kept me from getting that. I would rather now have the license as the car has long been crushed and recycled.

Yes, but an important aspect is that anything that was labeled "pay" is taxed, while anything labeled "allowance" is tax-free. If you are married and not living in the barracks, it takes a LONG time before you base pay exceeds your BAH, so the majority of your income ends up being tax-free. But the other half of that is that the junior guys will be getting their lodging and food provided, so all the rest of that pay is entirely disposable other than their cell bill and their insurance for their car. Also remember that healthcare is provided, and Navy docs are stellar. Even better with Flight Surgeons at squadrons because they are like super stars. And if mil docs cannot treat you, you get referred out to civilian specialists at no cost.

@cycologist7069
@cycologist7069 5 лет назад
This sounds cold hearted but that's totally on the sergeant. No one in the military should ever find themselves in a situation to need food stamps and if they do it's completely due to bad planning on their part. Yes there may be exceptions but the majority it's due to lack of planning ahead. Are service members underpaid for what they do and go through? Absolutely and then some. But the simple fact it is, the pay is what it is. All the tools are available to all members to plan accordingly. Pay scales, housing allowances based on with or without dependents, bonuses, etc. It's the service member's responsibility to make informed decisions and when and if to get married and whether or not to have kids. Does the spouse work or not work and what kind of work if they do? And I can tell you from an LPO standpoint, having a junior sailor (I was Navy) with these kinds of issues can be a real stressful burden.

Taxes don't pay anything except the debt you were born into which goes to a secret group of private people who own your federal reserve which has the right to just create any amount of money they want out of thin air... So when America pays for something it first created debt to do so. There is not enough money in the world to EVER pay off this debt because the debt comes FIRST WITH INTEREST already tagged on... This is pretty accurate, I was in the military from 2004-2010. After my I finished by BT, I decided to be a ranger, I went to rangers training (3/75). My first year pay check was ok was making about 30k a year, second year in the military (when I actually got deployed) and went on consent missions, it shot up to 38k. After it was all said and done (and after 3 deployments) I was making a little over 48k a year. I loved being a ranger but the greatest thing about it was now I have full health coverage, my college was free, I majored in IT because I was the lead comm's and was always trying to fix my radio (taking it apart etc). Now I make over 200k a year with full health coverage for life, USAA memebership for life, etc. I loved the military, and would do it all over again if I went back in time.

Jacob Wright or a mortgage. I always buy wherever I get stationed and rent it out when I leave. The place I just left the mortgage was $775 (136k/30 yrs/3.275% interest) and now that place is rented for $1425, giving me $650 profit, $500 after insurance etc. I’ve done this 5 times now. Each place was bought $0 down on VA loans, and it averages out to $500/month profit per property per month. On top of that I’m an e6 over 10 (base 3.8k/mon, bah 2k/mon, bas 300/mon, etc...) which leaves me with $8600/mon before taxes. The house I just bought was $224k so $980/mon mortgage and it’ll rent for $1700 when I leave in 3 years. Giving me an additional $800/mon so $9400/mon income assuming I don’t get promoted and my pay remains exactly the same. So the military can definitely be worth it. Or you could do what everyone else does and pay rent to someone like me and waste your money.

I spent 6 years in the USAF & completed my education while on active duty. When I was an E1, I drove an old car that was mechanically sound & people thought I was a loser. I graduated with my degree and began my business career at 24. Again, I drove basic vehicles & invested as much as I could with my pay. I became semi-retired (work whenever I feel like it, not because I need to) since turning 50 years-old. I guess I get the last laugh. Net Pay - Debt = Net worth (real wealth) not what kind of car you are making payments on.

Just give me three hots and a cot !! Another aspect of consideration, you don't pay a thing "0" for medical and dental and vision, you can shop the commissary and exchange, you have a gym free, MWR offerings on the base...rental camping, boating, travel, movie theater, bowling alley, golf course, just to name a few. Plus if you marry it covers your spouse and children. Education benefits, retirement after 20 years which allows you to continue to use all your benefits. ..... and cola goes up every year, not to mention pay increases granted by the government. ... but hey who cares about the money, we serve because we love it !

We get food in the field but it still comes as our bas that gets pulled out of our pay at 400$/mo and boss trips are all cost effective but you still pay to go. Yes dental etc is somewhat free but we have it because we wouldnt be able to afford it on certain operations . We get to go to the gym for free and just because it's a commissary doesn't mean it's better than Walmart lol. Yeah some of its great pay wise or what we get because we enlisted but need uniforms etc or extra besides the ones issued at basic you have to pay for at 120/ uniform without cap and everything needs patches name tapes or us. Army patches, pins for PC etc. Also I havent been home in 2 christmases and new years so I dont want to hear about Pay etc or the free stuff we get. If I wanted to go home I'd have to pay about 1000 for round trip plus anything. Anything lost in the field or stolen by someone you gotta pay yourself whether it be a 600$ gas mask or something worth more it's a no pay due or anything etc. They accidentally pay you extra they immediately take your paychecks after. It's not all free like you think it is

So, when do you buy a Chevrolet with 54% interest?
@fxzn

i dont get why everyone is saying "dont buy a car as soon as you get in, your interest will be so damn high!" i can co-sign with my dad and get 2% interest on a new lexus. better yet, just lease it then buy it at the end.

@@fxzn both dumb ideas. Best thing a new E1-E3 can do out of basic is buy a an $8000 car and pay it off ASAP.
@fxzn
@fxzn 4 года назад
@@LukeSwagwalker if you fancy a nice car, leasing isnt bad. you've got no debt, the payment is way lower than buying, and if you want to get a newer car at the end, you can. or you can just buy the car outright at the end and continue the payment for another 3 years. if you dont fancy a nice car, dont take out a loan. just save up some cash and yea buy a car around that price point but for CASH!
