MILKING a TREE!?! | Maple SUGAR on OPEN FIRE | Home Made Evaporator, Wood Boiler, Chickens, Gardens

Our annual spring tradition in Canada continues with MAPLE SYRUP production. We collect sap and boil our first run with a MASSIVE haul of 9 POUNDS of maple SUGAR! We do it on an open fire! UPDATE: I'm now up to over 25 lbs of SUGAR!
I do a shout-out to:
Wilder Life 38:23: / @bd-lf3im
Aaron Nelson: / @aaronnelson1099
River Bend Longbows: / @riverbendlongbowsoutd...
I'll show you how to tap a tree, talk about the right conditions for sap flow, the concentration of sugar in sap, how we collect and boil the sap from start to finish! I'll show you how maple syrup is made using a cheap homemade evaporator!
I'll show you have to make a homemade maple syrup evaporator for cheap or FREE!
I'll introduce my real brother and tour his modern homestead, the location of the Native American garden and show you all the firewood he collects for free, and how he stores and cuts it.
I'll update you on the goat gut pile and what of it remains! 4:15.
We build a sap boiling pit with salvaged bricks, an old stainless steel vat from a commercial kitchen and some metal pipes. We do almost all of the boil with fire wood and an open fire!
Watch us collect sap using a hacked up suzuki turned sap trolley!
I talk about how native American people never really boiled sap until Europeans arrived.
Stick around until the end to see what Holden does with his share of the maple sugar!

Really beards man This is just the shallow end of the vast ocean that is natural food sources and Really you could spread such a different and 10 times more positive message if you just documented different natural food discoveries ( ROOTS , PULPS , TEAS ETC) Rather than encouraging your audience to kill? When some of them Wont even have had a chance to form their own opinion but now they are doing what you project because they think its right.. its a sad world for the majority !

What's with you men. You don't have to be into the same stuff not be able to have a great relationship. A relationship depends on the person, the individual. Whether the dad is nice enough and loving enough to engage with his child boy or girl. Girls aren't always into their daddy's stuff but can have a wow relationsihp as boy. If the dad loves them enough and he himself is loving then he would always keep trying to engage with you. School stuff, your friends and how you getting on. You can have a lot in common and still not get on because of the individual. Many son's work along side their dads and can't stand them. A child is one of the most flexible beings and if he or she grows up not close to the parent usually it's because of the parent and their personality. Don't make that mistake if you ever have a child. If you do have a child and you are not close and it's not too old, it's never too late. It's all about YOU as a person and the way you are with your child. A child has many things going on - school, friends, activities (hopefully) you can always converse about what s/he is doing, how they are getting on, are they happy. It is for the parent to make that child mentally healthy and not for the child to make the parent happy. With that making the child happy will also make you happy and build on a relationship. Don't be limited, inflexible and think relationships with children are gender specific and a certain way. We live in a modern societ so keep a mondern approach. Just learn to love children and in return they will always love you. Sorry for your dad's lack of relationship as I can relate with both parents.

I love watching your videos because I learn something new every time you blew my mind making syrup and then brown sugar out of sap. I never knew and I've never really thought about how you can make that. I hate you combined the pots and had a boil over but still that end result was spectacular it was great meeting your brother in the video. Keep doing what you're doing much love and respect from Alabama. 😊

Just a hint for next season. I used to live in Vermont and made syrup for 5 years. You can cut your boiling time down if you remove the ice from your buckets. The sugar doesn't freeze, only the water does, so remove the ice and you'll have a more concentrated sap.
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 6 лет назад
Our buckets freeze right to the bottom!
@bigguns45acp
@bigguns45acp 6 лет назад
I saw liquid with ice dumping out of your buckets. The liquid part is the concentrated sugar. I would empty all my buckets into a 40 gallon plastic tub I had, cover it and let it freeze overnight, they the next day I would pick the ice out of the tub before boiling. I guess it depends on how cold it gets. But usually you can chip the ice away and just boil down the liquid. At least that's how it worked for me. It took me 3 seasons to learn that.

The natives collected sap in birch bark pans. They let it freeze and lifted out the ice on top. Very little if any sugar froze. The water was thrown out as ice and more sap was just added and ice lifted out until there was a concentrate of sap. Then it was boiled down until only the syrup was left. The sap concentrate was boiled until suddenly the water was gone and the temp of the sap would boil over at which point the heat was removed immediately and syrup was allowed to cool and put into containers.

By the way, a more efficient method is to actually let it all set in one solid block, and then with a good stone break it up into 'sugar cubes'. Great video!

Your kid is pretty sharp .. esp. this day in age. .. I can see a huge difference between him and the current average .. physical ability and coordination too. Im impressed and happy to see human's may survive after all ... lol, ((it is important to some how teach these great kids to protect themselves from deep levels of deception.. sadly)).

(I'm Mnicojou Lakota, we have Lakota, Nakota, and Dakota people across the great plains up into Canada) for us, usually we'd find very specific rocks (don't remember the traditional name of them) that we would heat in the fire (rocks at the bottom, fire built on top of it) and once they glowed red/yellow/orange, we'd drop them into bladder bags or brain tanned leather bags suspended like a deep hammock under three (sometime four) legged "tipi" structures. these rocks were chosen specifically because they didn't break apart or disintegrate once heated and eventually cooled down. that's how we made soups and i can see that they may have used maple sap in remedies, or even made small batches of maple syrup before european influence.

Great history lesson, thanks! I might have to try that method. I've heard of people trying the hot rocks in hollowed logs with very poor results.

natives used to use clay pots before steel for heating the sap and birch bark conyainers for collecting , but ya they made in greater quantity then you say before the Europeans arrived

I just started tapping some silver maple this year, already have a gallon. I was interested in making some indian sugar. Found your video and loved it, you have another subscriber. I'm into bushcraft and survival, have already mastered primitive fires, working on trees and herbs. Maybe I'll start some videos soon. Excellent video, and kid.
