In this final installment of my series, Simple Nightscape Images I want to put it all together so you can hopefully get some great insights into how I go about shooting my nightscape photography. It takes a long time to get proficient at this form of photography. It's very difficult and challenging, but the rewards are certainly well worth the effort.
Thanks so much for following along as we look at these various topics week after week. I very much appreciate that.
As always I value your comments and suggestions in the comments section down below. Don't forget to access the downloadable files at the link below also.

Richard, I just have to say that one the the main reasons I enjoy watching your videos, is that you are always no nonsense, no juvenile antics, on your videos. You present your material in a straight forward, mature way. And trust me, in the world of RU-vid photography videos, THAT is a very refreshing approach!

Thanks Richard for this workshop series, I found the workshop very beneficial. I really like your presentation style, it is clear and to the point. Keep up the good work. I would love to attend one of your workshops but since I live in the Midwest of the USA that probably not going to happen, so your online workshops for the next best solution. I agree that not all material on the internet should be followed without some common sense. I have watched a number of night photography videos to determine you do an extremely good job.

I have watched many videos from not only yourself but some of the others that you mentioned in this video. What I have come to figure out is to listen closely to each one and see the similarities, and differences, each have, and try to incorporate things into my night photography. I have tweaked how I take Milky Way pictures a lot this year, and have gotten some pretty decent results. Now comes my problem, it's the editing that I struggle with mightily. I have printed out a few this year just to see them on paper and have learned from that as well. I do enjoy this channel! As for the RU-vid ads, I believe that they have increased the amount, and frequency, of their ads in an effort to get more people to go premium. It worked on me sadly, I really disliked being caught up in a video and have it go to an ad mid sentence. So I started paying for an ad free life....

Wow. What a tutorial. So much information and very personal opinion. You are so right. The facts are that you have to do it to learn it. Always have fun and keep watching the tried and tested vlogers. Not all are the same as you say richard. I've seen some horrible ones. You and the few you mention are by far the best at this craft. It is a craft and an art form. What you see on site has to be viewed in the mind before you shoot. You create the magic. Thats the pay off. Knowing how to get the result you see in your minds eye. Few people think photography is an art but it is. People like you show us mere mortals how good it can be. We will always be a step behind but glad we are on the same path. As always great to watch and hear you. Till next time. Keep seeing stars

Hey Richard, thanks for the shout out! I totally agree with your message.... I am constantly experimenting with different techniques for capturing and editing my milky way images so I highly recommend that people don't take my information as gospel. Instead it is meant to be a building block to help them improve and continue to grow as a night photographer. Hopefully they can find a technique that I share that works best for them and take a photo that they are proud to hang on their wall! I've absolutely made mistakes in past videos and I am sure I will make mistakes in the future since we are all human and have flaws. Ultimately, my goal is to help others progress faster at night photography and avoid all the trial and error that I had to learn on my own. Thanks again and one day I will make it out to Australia so we should do a collaboration in the future! Take Care, Mike Ver Sprill

Allô Richard, I so much understand what you’re saying. I shifted my bird 🦅 photography to night photography about 2 years ago. It became a passion every minute of the day and night. I even dream about it. As my experience grew up, I’ve stumbled upon channels I didn’t like ... but all the ones you mentioned I follow. They’re great people and teachers .... as much as you .... 🤔🤔🤔🤔 ???? Surely, not as cute! 😂 A few weeks ago, I was asked to give a conference about star/night🌟 photography. My Photography Club found out I had a good knowledge on the subject. 🌟🌟🌟🌟It felt like a was “a mini you” !!!!!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I’ve learned so much listening to you and reading about stars, constellations and astronomy. Great information and inspiration as usual. Luv ya! Say hi to Glenys!

hi Richard great video ,ive seen lots of landscape photographers posting a video on astro and sometimes i have to laugh theres no looking for composition during day and they turn up at night not knowing what to shoot .ive watched all your videos more than once and ive been out shooting astro with pretty good results and the places ive shot ive been there lots of times during the day to get intimate with the place, then when i see these so called experts turn up on a night just makes me laugh .Your channel is the only one i take advice from because firstly your passion and your infectious inspiring attitude says it all and also its only about astro .ive had like everyone else challenges to shoot astro from wary about being out at night alone to the weather but that was then this is now and its like anything the more you do the more confident you feel .Ihope you understood all that but just to say your the best out there so keep it up all the best phill.

Great series, Richard, and a very fitting conclusion. I'm sure there are others, just like me, who have watched all your video tutorials avidly, and have picked up your enthusiasm and passion for nightscape photography. I used to just be interested in landscape photography, but now it's nightscapes that is my main interest. I have followed all your advice and guidance, and it has worked!! I am now taking images I am very happy with, and I still have much to learn and to practice. The good folks in my village are now used to seeing me walking around the fields in the dead of night, pointing my camera at the stars, seeking out tractors and drills to place in the foreground etc etc, and I'm loving it!! Thank you for the ongoing motivation and inspiration. Your is the best photography channel, by a significant margin.

Your comments are spot on. I have narrowed my time spent on YT videos on this subject to your channel primarily and two of the others you mentioned. I have ventured much more deeply into night photography as a result of being inspired by you. I have found your advice on how to progress step by step the most valuable to me. And yes, I have found learning to focus properly is the biggest technical challenge in the dark followed by taking test shots to get the composition down. I recently acquired the Z6 and 20mm 1.8 and though I understand the person behind the gear is what makes the shot work, having fantastic gear is an incredible blessing. I have extensive post processing skills but have found your work flow, simple and straight forward, to be of great value in shortening the time it takes to get great results after the shooting is over. Thanks for producing the best and most practical content on this subject on YT.

I'm actually really pleased that you called out and addressed alot of the bs we find on RU-vid. There's too many reviews where people have something in their hands for five minutes and bang their an expert. I would much rather see something used on a regular basis showing true results such as your thoughts on the 1.8s, l relied on that and your history behind the lens before purchasing it. Nightscapes certainly cannot be summed up in five minutes, but there are some who think so and many get fooled. I really liked the summary of this video, it was refreshing.

Great summary Richard, I always used to shoot at 3200 iso, but since watching your channel, shoot at 6400, and the picture comes out so much better. I don't really get that much opportunity to scout locations, I often have to just go when a clear sky presents itself, and just go back to known locations on other occasions. I have also found using longer focal lengths with wider apertures and doing vertoramas gets more detail aswell. Am learning to use different lighting such as led panels, light painting and rear curtain flash for selfies. Ive been having some technical difficulties with the rear curtain flash synching on the yongnuo flash triggers, dont know if its an issue of cheap batteries, but thats been frustrating. My main challenge currently is editing, it just doesn't work like it does for you. Currently thats my biggest challenge

Hi there, I did my first night shoot trying to capture the milkyway in NZ, half a week ago, I have a Nikon D7500 with a Nikkor 35mm 1.8 DX lens, I've noticed that I cant take very wide encompassing photos of the sky, I have a list of 4 lenses that I've read could be good for nightscape photography, the Samyang 14mm 2.8, Tamron 17-35mm F2.8-4, Nikorr 24mm 1.8 , Samyang 10mm 2.8 or Sigma 24mm 1.4. Which would you suggest is best for milkyway photography? When I took my photos I took some test exposures to see how dark or light the images were, which is best for post processing? Darker or lighter exposures as the ones I took were on the darker side and there are not really any natural colours coming out in lightroom when I bump up the exposure I was shooting at 10 seconds on 320 iso with 1.8 aperture.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 3 года назад
Thanks a lot for watching Mike. I wouldn't recommend any of the lenses you mentioned for your camera. I'd look at these: Tokina 14-20 f2, Samyang 16mm f2, Sigma 18-35 f1.8 The lenses I'm suggesting are made for crop sensor cameras such as your D7500 You'll need to shoot at a higher iso to capture the stars. Depending on ambient light levels I'd go as high as iso3200 or higher.
@mikehoskin1674

@@nightscapeimages.richard I've been recommended tonight the Tokina 11-16 F2.8. My thinking about lenses is to get ones that will be compatible with an FX format camera a few years down the track, is that a bad choice to make.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 3 года назад
@@mikehoskin1674 Hey Mike, the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 is also a crop sensor lens. I think it's a great idea to get lenses that will be compatible down the track with full frame .. but that's a little more difficult these days as all the new cameras are mirrorless designs with their own lens mounts. You can mount "F" mount Nikon lenses on the mirrorless "Z" cameras but you need an adaptor for that. It's a difficult decision to make. The Samyang 14mm f2.4 would be the lens I'd recommend if you want full frame compatibility. That's a newer and far better version to the 14mm f2.8. Hope that helps.
@mikehoskin1674
@mikehoskin1674 3 года назад
@@nightscapeimages.richard oh yeah, I was thinking more like a Nikon D850 when the prices drop as that's still an F mount. Are mirrorless cameras better than full frame ones. That Samyang 14mm 2.4 is a bit more than I want to spend right now eh, I've only had the camera for 2 weeks and that lens costs what the camera did.
