Justin Fruechte, Forage and Cover Crop Specialist at Millborn Seeds, helps provide insight on the many reasons Millborn's Pea Oat Blend is a powerful option for forage supply.
By adding peas into Millborn Oats, you're able to enjoy a quality blend featuring increased protein percentage and digestibility.
Millborn's Pea Oat blend for 2013 features 60% Peas and 40% Oats.
This video was shot the first part of July and this crop will be harvested soon followed by a Hay Millet to help produce another couple tons of feed from the Millet.
With a cool season annual forage (Millborn's Pea Oat Blend) in the Spring and a warm season forage (Millborn's Hay Millet) in the Summer, you can maximize acres for yield and quality. This is great for a cow calf operation, allowing maximum feed for acre and ensuring the land reaches its potential for value.
This is a great example of what we can be doing for double cropping rotation by adding a high quality and high yielding annual forage - Millborn's Pea Oat Blend.

I actually like that mix :) Been watching a lot of videos and I like em keep it up. As an organically minded person (Twas my introduction to farming so I know no different) I would hope he (land owner) is putting a lot of organic matter back into the soil, help keep those good yields up wouldn't mind some shelter trees too ;) Just an observation

In France during the last century it was used to mix rye with ''vesce'' : vicia sativa, leguminosae 15/70 centimeters hight, family of peas, fabaceas, these mix was very interesting on winter for to cut on spring season for forrage... it exists number of variety of vesce....

We harvest peas and oats like this as a forage as well. We also seed down a lowland grass and alfalfa mix with it. We are able to get 2 more cuttings from it. The stand usually lasts 3 or 4 years in our heavy ground. Love this method to maximize tonnage for our heifers and drycows.

How did you plant them? Broadcast? Drill?

I have been following some of the things Gabe Brown has been doing- the mixes you are describing- how does it affect the development of soil organic material composition?

I was thinking peas and trinicale, why oats?
@RenovoSeed

Use triticale over oats in the pea blend if your soil is lighter and climate drier. Oats will do better on heavier ground. The quality will be similar between the two, but harvest conditions will dictate that.

Can you plant soybeans into?
@RenovoSeed

If the pea/oat field is harvested early enough you will be able to follow that harvest by planting soybeans.
