I have professional insight for you regarding the game's 'retro look' aspects as an NPD manager. People (consumers) will tell you they like products that are 'old school', 'retro', or from a bygone era. But in reality, they think of these retro aspects while looking through 'the good ol' days' lens. They only like retro when it's combined with the current 'comfort of use' standards and sifted through the current aesthetic (trending, colors, shapes, visual effects). The UI of Millenia is missing that insight entirely. They delivered an early '00 UI clone and combined it with clip art graphics from CIV4. It's 'old-school but un-cool'. It's like a car company would say "we are reviving an iconic model - VW Beatle 3.0" but would delete automatic windows because the consumers said they like retro.
That's a really good take, and I agree completely. And yeah, I know what you mean, the retro take doesn't work if you don't also add in modern improvements which are just better. 4X is a really forgiving genre for graphics - but user experience has evolved a ton over the years. Honestly, the graphics didn't bug me as much as the UI/UX - which felt dated compared to any other 4X on the market. It seems like a lot of people who've played have had the same thoughts, so hopefully that's an area of focus in the rest of the game's development.
Another concern with the graphics is the GPU usage. When I play on medium it uses 100% of GPU! Maybe in the final version of the game is optimized, but it is really annoying that it uses so much resources with such graphics.
Oh I completely forgot about that. Yeah my GPU usage was also unexpectedly high - something is definitely going wrong there but I'm assuming that's just an active development / haven't got around to optimising issue
@@Gigi-xr3qs i played both civ for years and this demo a several times. These games might share hexagons and theme, and thats all, the mechanics are completly different, be it combat, buildings, technologies or even progress
