Millennial Leadership: Stop Complaining, Start Coaching | Danita Bye | TEDxBismarck
Danita speaks about how millennials want a coach and a mentor rather than a boss. She asks the questions “What are the coaching and mentoring micro-moves that we can make that will have a major lifetime empire state building impact on our millenials?" and "Will YOU be that domino difference?" Danita Bye, M.A. is a leadership and sales development expert. She is the founder of Sales Growth Specialists and has gained valuable leadership experience as a sales leader for Xerox Corporation and in private equity ownership.
Danita served on the boards of private Christian universities. She currently serves on the North Dakota Economic Development Foundation, as well as the North Dakota Petroleum Council. She is a member of the Forbes Coaches Council and is a sales coach for Harvard Business School MBA students. Her headquarters are in North Dakota, but Danita works digitally and her business operates on a global scale.
Danita grew up on The Triple T Ranch in Stanley, North Dakota. Her parents continue to make a huge imprint on her life. They are entrepreneurs who figured out how to not only survive but thrive in homestead country. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Who is the Millennial in my life that needs my encouragement? Thanks for reminding us to be intentional in seeking the opportunities to mentor and share our experience.

Great question, Elsa! I confess that I'm often prone to focus elsewhere....people and places that seems more fun. However, if we are thinking about Steven Covey's 4 quadrants, the Millennial initiative fits in the Important and Non-Urgent quadrant. And, that's where leaders live.

Thank you so much! It is a need-of-the-hour issue! I'm preparing for two webinars. The first is "Managing Millennials & Surviving Boomer Bosses" that's dealing with the Generational Gap in the Workplace. The second is a Sales Growth Webinar Series. The question is: "Frustrated Managing Millennial and Next-Gen Salespeople?" We're covering the 3 most common places managers cry help - Motivating, Coaching and Raising the Bar (Accountability)

This video was so helpful for me. I have superstar teammate that has had trouble getting results from other team members. Coaching has come up as a way to mitigate the disconnect. Your video spoke directly to us. I have shared it with my team. Thank for your passionate committment. We are right next to the Atlanta airport. We would love to meet you sometime.

This is a great reminder that by pressing "pause" to share our insights and experience, we achieve more than by simply forging ahead, solo. Thanks, Danita.

I like your pressing "pause" visual, Kara. In our crazy-busy world, we often forget the tremendous power of connecting - really connecting - with others.
@danitabye1327
@danitabye1327 5 лет назад
Thanks, Kara. I like the way that you word this - pressing "pause." We all need to do this, don't we? It's so easy to get wrapped up in ToDo List and we don't "pause" to reflect on what's important and where we should be investing. I appreciate your joining the movement and keeping this conversation alive!

This is the focus difference- and yes, it was a focus I learned in 1980 from my mentor. She said, as she looked at me- "You will make aa Difference, you hold such promise!" For over 35 years my speaking messages were that message. I was not a millennial but I knew how to stop. look, listen and smile at those I ran into, spoke to, found in business, saw in schools and yes, Danita- your message is NEEDED AND MUST BE DELIVERED.

Thanks for your two-thumbs up! 63% of Millennials salespeople report being dis-engaged at work. And, 71% of Sales Leaders report being frustrated. So, it is indeed a timely topic.

Great message here, one to put into play in our daily lives both in the workplace and outside of it in an effort to bridge generational differences. I love the domino energy effect and feel this analogy is so valid when it comes to coaching and mentoring our millennial workers (and vice versa). Millennials absolutely matter and I look forward to implementing the reminders and suggestions you so eloquently brought forth!
@danitabye
@danitabye 5 лет назад
You're on track with the "vice versa," Angie. There's much they can learn from us....and vice versa.
@danitabye
@danitabye 5 лет назад
Thanks for your encouragement, Angie. My "professional experts" have invited me NOT to use the domino idea - it's over-used and not distinct enough. However, I believe it's a great illustration - and reminder - of the tremendous impact we have on those around us.

Thanks, Angie, for your words of encouragement. I also spent some time this past week talking with the youth group about suicide prevention and depression. That's when I learned from Cheyenne that 90% of our serotonin is produced in our gut flora! So, the learning goes both ways. Both you and her are doing good work! And, I appreciate your sharing this message and passing along!

Growing the next level of leaders is essential in Scaling Up a business. It is also the primary reason why companies get stuck and hit the ceiling. Danita Bye's work on Millennial makes perfect sense. It is good for all parties involved, the mentee, the mentor and the company.Danita thank you for your work on this.

Paul, this is constant drumbeat message I hear everyday from leaders. They KNOW that tapping their expertise is critical - and are asking for practical, rubber-meets-the road help on how to do it. That's one of the key reasons I wrote Millennials Matter.
@danitabye
@danitabye 5 лет назад
Thank you, Paul. It's so true - to scale our companies, we need to build a strong culture that taps the expertise and wisdom of senior leaders AND taps the fresh creativity of emerging leaders who operating naturally in our technology-based culture.

I found Danita Bye’ talk on Millennials Matter an inspiring thought, I truly believe that many baby boomers need to take heed, and start walking along side the next generation of leadership, otherwise the private owners legacy could well be lost, and the corporate leader loosing their shareholder wealth. This is a case of win win for both today’s and tomorrow’s leaders. Thank Danita for forfronting this topic
@danitabye1327
@danitabye1327 5 лет назад
Great point, Steve. We need to start "walking alongside." We didn't get to be the leaders that we are with a snap of the fingers. Neither will they. However, we can do our part to help them on the journey. Or, we will have no one to transition our businesses to. Thanks!

So important to not let all you have learned retire when you do. People want to learn, teach them. Share this video and important idea.

I hear this from every industry I'm involved with - they are so concerned about the loss of expertise and knowledge. Yet, my experience is that people WANT to learn. So, mentors - let's rise to the challenge.

Fantastic talk, Danita. And when you really get down to brass tacks (to borrow a phrase from "our" generation), didn't we all want what Millennials want? They are just doing such a better job of expressing it...of course, it helps when someone (like you!) interprets it :)

So true! On a radio interview this afternoon, we talked about the work-life balance. We all want it, don't we? We all want to be a good dad, a good husband, to have great friends to hang with and enjoy life with. It's interesting to think (for many of us) that our seasons of life are measured by key relationships.

It does work for everyone, doesn't it, Nancy? We will need a word of encouragement. It seems like we can get hit with negativity from every direction. We can to the words of encouragement to help strengthen our resolve to move forward in the midst of obstacles!

Right on, Nancy. It works for all of us - and we often forget to do it. We get too focused on our ToDo Lists, sometimes.

This is some shallow analysis. Empty ideas. No one has a problem motivating younger people to do what they are passionate about. The problem is getting them to do work that needs to be done but they are not passionate about. They burn out easily. How do you get them to endure periods of hard work without immediate gratification.
