As a hobbyist, I love tinkering with vintage items, and when I stumbled upon this 70s lamp in need of some TLC, I knew I had found my next project. The lamp had seen better days, with defective wiring and a corroded surface, but I was determined to bring it back to life. Since I’m not a professional, I work with simple, easily available materials and tools. This makes it easy for anyone to replicate the process at home. Here’s how I transformed this piece into a modern, functional beauty.
Initial Condition
The lamp was in rough shape, with outdated wiring and significant corrosion on the metal parts. My goal was clear: repaint, relight, and give this lamp a fresh start.
Step 1: Disassembly
The first step was to carefully disassemble the lamp. I separated each part, setting the stage for a thorough cleaning and makeover.
Step 2: Preparing for Primer Application
First Sanding:
To start the repainting process, I sanded all the surfaces with 120 grit sandpaper. This helped remove rust and dirt while also roughening the surface for better primer adhesion. Following this, I used 600 grit sandpaper to create a slightly rough texture, ensuring the primer would bond well with the metal.
Next Cleaning:
After sanding, it was crucial to clean the surfaces thoroughly. I used acetone to remove any dust and oil, creating a perfect base for the primer.
Step 3: Priming
For the primer, I chose an anti-rust protection primer specifically designed for metal surfaces. I applied two coats, making sure each layer dried thoroughly to provide a strong, protective base.
Step 4: Preparing for Painting
Once the primer was set, I sanded the surfaces again with 600 grit sandpaper. This step smoothed out any remaining imperfections and prepared the surface for painting.
Step 5: Painting
Painting was an exciting step and my highlight of the transformation. I followed the product instructions meticulously, paying close attention to curing times. I applied two coats of a universal matte spray paint, which not only refreshed the lamp's look but also offered a durable finish.
Step 6: Reassembly
A few days later I was ready to reassemble the lamp. Carefully, I put all the pieces back together, ensuring everything was securely in place.
Step 7: Modernization
To bring the lamp into the modern era, I decided to upgrade the lighting system. I kept the old wiring and lightbulb in place for nostalgia but added a modern COB LED stripe, along with a mini LED controller for remote control and connection to a power supply. This update not only enhanced the lamp's functionality but also provided a simple and contemporary solution.
Step 8: Reveal Final Result
The transformation was complete! The once-dull lamp now stands as a testament to the timeless appeal of vintage design, combined with modern efficiency. It's amazing how a bit of effort and creativity can breathe new life into an old piece. The lamp now lights up my home office, adding a warm, nostalgic glow with a modern twist.
Restoring this 70s lamp was a fulfilling experience, combining my love for vintage aesthetics with practical DIY skills. If you have a similar project, I hope my journey inspires you to take it on-there's nothing quite like reviving a piece of history and making it your own.

Wow, great job. I really like your color choice. But as your asking what I would choose ... hm, maybe a dark red. I don't know... :)
